The case for Bruno to be club captain

First of all, what impact would it have on Maguire and what has he done to have the captaincy taken away from him?

Secondly, there's no guarantee Bruno will maintain this level of performance.

People are getting really carried away about a very small amount of evidence and this thread is the apex of that.
Well, what has he done to justify giving it to him in the first place? And if he would react poorly to it being taken from him, it reflects badly on him. Whenever Bruno is a worthy candidate is another question, but he has a good track record of being a leader.

He was the best of an admittedly underwhelming bunch but it's his now and he's been playing well for a couple of months. He's composed, leads by example and, touch-wood, is an ever-present. Changing tack now would only ever look like a demotion, with no real justification. Which is all by-the-by as the main crux of this thread is that a guy who's played a couple of hundred minutes of football is somehow seen as being worthy of the captaincy. Whatever your opinions on Maguire, it's a stupidly premature conversation to be having.

As I’ve said, while I don’t argue for Bruno’s captaincy, it’s a bit absurd to ridicule an idea of him becoming a captain (not now, but in the summer), with the main argument being that he had just came to the club... when our current captain had also been in the club for 5 minutes.

So what you're saying is that Maguire being made club captain was premature, therefore the notion of the same happening with Bruno is equally premature? Well I'm glad we finally agree ;)

I agree that the captaincy should be earned but when Maguire signed we were hardly overwhelmed by candidates were we? And he seems to have the personality for it, so there's no reason at all to change course.
Maguire doesn't strike me as being particularly inspirational and he's not a defensive rock who leads by example. He doesn't seem an ideal candidate at all.

But saying that, there really aren't any other outstanding candidates at the club and taking it off him now would do more harm than good.

If McTominay progresses well over these next couple of seasons then there is no better fit than him for club captain.

Why don't we keep Maguire as Club Captain and install Bruno as Regional Captain and Maguire can report directly to Bruno.
I like this idea much. Their armbands would have C for Maguire, and "C" for Bruno.

He does look the most captain material we've had in years. Let's let him settle in for a while first though.

We should also build him a statue immediately.

Stretford End is now Bruno End.

Brunchester Brunited.

The Red Brunos.

Exactly! I see no convincing arguments here, only mockery and everyone jumping aboard the bandwagon. All I was saying was that I've witnessed (albeit from the very limited evidence so far) that Bruno has good leadership qualities.

I think he'll be United captain in the very near future, you heard it here first.

Now we just need to let this thread die. :D
There’s no way Maguire will be stripped of the club captaincy

It’s an interesting topic though

United need to get back to the time when we had 8 or 9 captains in the starting 11

There was a time when it could be VDS, Nev, Rio, Vida, Evra, Giggs, Rooney, Ronaldo, Carrick, Scholes.

Now I know he hasn't been here long and you could argue whether the captaincy means much, but I feel Bruno is already a better fit for United captain than Maguire.

In such a short space of time, Bruno has already made a massive impact at the club and the way we play football.

For me he holds the following attributes which automatically make him a better candidate for the captaincy over Maguire:

- Plays in midfield where he can influence the game a lot more
- Leads by example
- Hard working (and it seems to be rubbing off on those around him)
- Never shirks responsibility, and also confident with set pieces
- Good communicator - fluent in English as well as being able to talk to his other Spanish/ Portuguese speaking teammates
- Already hugely popular with his teammates
- Fast becoming a fan favourite if he isn't already.

Thoughts?
You're being irrational.

Could’ve made the same case for Di Maria after his first month at the club.....

Who honestly cares who the captain is?

Fred has been just as good if not better than Bruno in those games but not many are clamouring for him to be our captain despite him been our leader on the pitch performance wise.

Maguire is a good fit anyways. A captain in defence is a solid choice since he can see all the pitch all the time.

Honestly feel like Maguire should sort his defending before thinking about being a captain. No issue with giving it to Bruno as he's shown more quality in 10 minutes than Maguire in his whole career.

The only thing against giving it to Bruno is that he could be a little too hot tempered, as evidenced by that kick. You'd hate to put someone who might easily be frustrated into a posituon where they're obliged to interact with the ref.

So while I agree Bruno has shown more leadership qualities than Maguire, Harry's cool, slabby head maybe just edges it in his facour. As you know he's probably never going to get booked for going off on one at the officials.

Losing to Comeback Winning!

Give him the armband.
Cheers.
This is the kind of culture/environment with characters, common (now rare) in the Keane then later Scholes-Giggs days.
= Setting high standard and keeping each others on their toes.

Now we need other players to scold Bruno whenever he make mistakes. I'm sure Bruno won't mind that, in fact he'll welcome it, based from his interview.

I never accepted Harry as captain. And it doesn't have anything about his plqying qualities or something else. He is just not a captain material. Doesn't have that aura around him, personality. Same feeling i had with Gary Neville.
But Bruno is the man.

He absolutely deserves it. The sooner he gets it, the better. Hopefully next season.

I think it's odd Maguire instantly became a United captain from day 1. I reckon he was like 3rd choice captain at Leicester, no?

Deserves it. Always wary about giving someone captaincy too quickly, but he's our catalyst in every way.

Whether he gets the armband permanently or not, players are going to be afraid of messing up in fear of a bollocking from him. That's a good thing. Too many in this team are a bit soft.

In the beginning of video, Pallister basically answered your question. There is no one were the best candidate when Young left and beside Maguire was the captain in some of our winning results in 2019 before he was appointed permanently so Ole did experiment this too.

Good news, this. Not only because Fernandes is most suitable, it also lessens Maguire’s ‘status’. Should things continue the way they are in terms of his form, there’s less of a media uproar or politics preventing him from being taken out of the side.

Will Maguire get it back when he returns from injury? If we play well against PSG and Bruno shows his leadership qualities wearing the armband, I can't imagine giving it back to Maguire. It will be interesting to see how Ole moves forward here.

He has shown quite comprehensively that his attitude is world class. I don't think this will affect him even a tiny bit. It may boost other players around him though.

This is only a vice captaincy. But it's good to know things are getting more settled - not a free for all in terms of penalty kicks, and not a heavy rotation on the captaincy.
