He’s been captain throughout the youth teams he’s played in right? Defo speaks with the swagger and authority of one. Man said “we showed them their respects, but ultimately we’re the bigger team and we want to dominate and take the 3 points”

badman.

As I have been saying for a long time - and people laughed at me - he's a start player for United if he can stay injury-free. We need him. He has things we need, and he has things Ole needs. The only CB who can match Mbappe for pace. Sensational tonight.
it’s never a ability thing, it’s only ever going to be down to his injuries. Hopefully we don’t hammer him with minutes and manage his time on the pitch well. certain games and against certain strikers he is exactly what we need.

he also holds the guiness world record for clearing hungry hippo board in the fastest time. Talent.

I had a good chuckle when he said it was good to get a run out. Playing against Neymar, Mbappe and Di Maria was just a run out for Axel

Everybody deserves a MOTM, but i'm especially happy for this guy. Axel's been out for 10 months and come in and put in a terrific performance.

Was great seeing him play so well today. Really thought he was going to break through last season but of course that wasn't to be. Hopefully this is his year.
Yeah he was all set to break through against Liverpool last October

I was honestly shocked by how great he was tonight

10 months out away at PSG against Neymar and Mbappe, it's nothing short of phenomenal

Knew he was something special but just praying he can stay fit now, despite all the plaudits received Ole needs to manage his games at the moment

Lindelof and Maguire have a lot to learn from this guy. He’s mastered the basic defensive skill of winning the ball before your striker gets a chance to touch it and turn. Rio was a genius at that. The talent comes from doing it without fouling (which Maguire is hopeless at) and Victor is hopeless at the attempt all together. Victor always allows his attacker to turn and run - it’s pathetic
 Maguire and his fouls

From all positions, I think centerback is the least useful to use stats. They can't capture positioning, marking, intimidation, and communication which are super important on defence.
The maguire supporters love to use stats to defend him.

Yeah I remember that. Took the sting off not being able to sign him permanently a bit. I thought he was just going to be on the bench forever, but he looks very much part of Ole's plans which is great to see.

Hmmm wonder if Cavani knew that Ole was going to start Axel and wanted to offer him some advice on how to deal with that PSG front three, well looks like it worked an absolute treat so nice work Edinson for that

Surprise surprise. Another academy product performing well.

With performances like that, Tuanzebe could be better than a new signing if he can stay fit.

Buzzing after watching him tonight.

Ole had him as the 2nd/3rd CB going into last season before he got injured. And he has his opportunity again not only with tonight's performance, but with Bailly unsurprisingly going down with injury again.

But as has been the case for the better part of the past 2 or 3 years, he has to stay fit and make himself available to be selected as part of a two or three CB selection.

Bailly has the pace and some strength, so physically and in theory he would work. But thr fact that Bailly has zero composure and always has injuries, he cannot be relied on.

But as we've seen since Mourinho was manager and hearing about him coming up the ranks, Axel had the physical and mental attributes to succeed....but injuries derailed his progression.

Gotta stay fit and be available. Fantastic performance tonight, but you're only as good as your next game so let's hope he can continue to be a reliable and quality CB option.

Very good performance.

His weakness still is aerially though. Especially long punts upfield which need to be headed.

I'm still buzzing about this performance from last night, quite honestly I can't remember a United center back performance as imperious since the golden days of Rio and Vidic. He was first to the ball, showed strength, recovery pace and pretty much the complete package.

If you saw that interview without context, and without watching the game, you would have no idea we just played the CL finalists.

deadpan. Brilliant.

Been saying since day one Axel is the best CB we have in the squad and has potential to become a top class CB. Followed him closely during his loan spell at Villa and almost instantly saw this guy was something special, a generational centre halve talent I'd say. Only thing that worries me is the injuries and the fact that it is possible it might ruin his carreer but let's hope not. For his age, ability wise he's the best CB out there without a doubt imo.

Only other poster on here I know has had the same opinion for a very long time is @FootyGirl88

Hopefully yesterdays game showed many of you why we think so.

The kid looks ice cold and I surely hope so that he develops into a captain. Every team needs leaders and Axels speaks very smartly. Love to see that and a great performance. Just stay injury free kid.

Regardless of that, a kid CB like Axel can learn so much about the game from someone like Cavani. Great to see him willing to learn and listen from a seasoned pro.

Yep i agree, hes definaltey what we've been missing in defense. Im certain if he can stay fit he will be an automatic starter. Like i said before Tuanzebe +1 till the end of the season.

I love how cold he is in that interview, we want our defenders cold and unphased.

Talk in this thread about dropping Maguire for him baffles me.

Surely he is exactly the type of partner Maguire has been crying out for?
Maguire has been making mistakes that have nothing to do with who he is paired with. I think his weaknesses have more to do with his own limitations than who plays next to him.

Looks like a lad who is built for defending and also loves to defend. should be starting for us IMO

Absolutely incredible performance given his long layoff, and that interview is perfect  . If he can stay fit I reckon he'll take that spot off Lindelof for sure.

Also means that Jones, Rojo, Bailly and Fosu Mensah just aren't necessary any more. Axel is better than all of them and no more injury prone. With Mengi coming through too who I really like, and even Fish looking promising too, I reckon the days of us lurching from one injury prone chaotic disaster of a CB to another might finally be behind us.

Axel Maguire
Lindelof Mengi

I could live with that.

I don't think we would have bought Maguire if Axel remained fit. I'm not slagging of Maguire, I just think we would have gone for different type of defender and paid much less.

Well done to the kid. Consistency is key if you want to be regarded as the best CB at United, lets hope he stays fit and becomes indispensable.

Still can't get over how good that performance was. Out for 10 months and comes back to play what might be the best attack in the world and he just bosses it. Unreal talent

Outstanding game. I can't get too carried away because it was one game and I am sure there are some random CBs who have pocketed PSG before and his injury record last season was disgusting. Keen to see what he is really about this season.

My biggest worry is the fact he was out for 71 days last year because of a hamstring injury, and then out for another 60 days when he returned to full training. I desperately hope this isn't a chronic problem like Dembele or others.

I think most of us knew he had performances like the one last night in him. He is a very good defender.

I just don't know if he can be relied upon. All it takes is a niggling injury or tweak and knowing his luck we won't see him again for months.
