Getting carried away after a win against PSG, it seems like the caf has learned nothing

Crap thread or rather WUM.

Yes, we played 5 at the back but we didn't defend for 90 mins. We could have hit them 4. It wasn't really a park the bus tactics. We pressed them ,harassed them and made them mistakes.

I am firmly #Oleout but hey, if you can't enjoy an European away win then football is not your sport.

Fair point. I think my only criticism left is that we seem better at being reactive rather than proactive (like after lockdown when we were chasing top 4). It's probably the missing link between us and a proper title challenge. Hopefully it comes over the next few years.
I agree with that. There have been signs that we're getting better at breaking teams down but we're not there yet. The quality of opposition in the Champions League might make us a better outfit in that than in the PL, if we're looking for upsides.

You want to know what real knee jerking is. When for 6 months prior we were basically unbeaten in the league, nothing occurs, then in the summer due to not signing Sancho everyone starts to turn on the club, because "we are falling behind". At this time, no games had been played. We lost two league games and win one with bad performances, clearly due to the lack of preseason we have had, and people are already clamouring for Ole to be sacked. We end up signing 5 players, 2 for the future ( which we have all been clamouring for) and 3 in now. One that looked great yesterday ( telles), one that has looked good when played ( vdb) and another that has been world class in the past ( cavani). But because we don't sign sancho, even though we fixed our depth issue which was shown yesterday, we are a club in decline apparently.

People were so hell bent on looking at other teams, that they forgot that despite our defensive issues this season, we have players coming through in that position, like Tuanzebe that we saw last night. Kneejerking is scrutinizing AWB and Maguire, despite how good both were last season, forgetting the last 6 months, and laughing at them for having a terrible incident over the summer. Wanting them to be stripped of the captaincy or sold.

What's funny about last night is that its actually what we should have expected given our results and performances over the last 6 months. We have annahilated teams and been solid defensively. The spurs, palace and even Brighton games were actually anomolies, yet people who wanted to be right about Ole and the club, purposely forgot last season's climax in order to get an agenda going.

In reality, it is the OP who is kneejerking, not the people celebrating this win.

Last time we played Sevilla under Mourinho and got knocked out we played some of the worst football I’ve ever seen and Mourinhos career was finished here after that game. The last time we played PSG we had something like 28% possession we defended deep as possible against a PSG side worse than today.

This time round we dominated Sevilla and our inexperience just showed. Against PSG with Neymar this time we were proactive and probably could have scored a lot more. That’s progress to me and I will take it. It doesn’t mean much in terms of the overall picture, it’s just a group stage game, but it is still progress. It can only be a good sign we went up against CL finalists and bettered them even if they didn’t have key figures.

Pretty much. There are people though who have measured opinions. A lot of the Ole in crowd are wary of his shortcomings, and a lot of the Ole out crowd see that he's progressed the side somewhat, trimmed the squad, improved the atmosphere and gotten good results when he can set the team up for counter attack.

I don't disagree that an emphatic performance has some people thinking everything is great again and we're going to win major titles under Ole. Similar with players, they perform for 2-3 matches and people think they've proved a point. For both the manager, the team collectively, and players individually, it is consistency of performance that determines how good you are.
TBH its still very negative to be Ole out at this point. We are clearly building, bringing in new players both from outside and the academy, improving the team all around. Isn't this what people wanted us to get a DOF for? Isn't this why we sacked Jose?

For me, even if Ole isn't the guy long term, he's building and has built something that could really be successful after we failed to rebuild initially.

I'm better than Messi (even though I'm not)
We had a plan and executed it to near perfection, turning over last seasons finalists and one the tournaments favourites away. Yes the first half was cagey but we went toe to toe with them in the second. You can only play one game at a time and we just won a massive one so just enjoy it.

I remain to be convinced by Ole but that doesn't mean we aren't allowed to enjoy the highs. Heaven knows there have been more than enough lows in the last seven years.

There will be enough days this season in which we will lose and have time to be gloomy about, so when we win such big matches with such fantastic performance it's time to celebrate for me. Enjoy the wins, these don't come that often anymore.

Some fans need a massive reality check. If you think this Man Utd side of 2020 can just blast all opponents off the pitch with bravura attacking football you obviously haven't been paying much attention to our results since Fergie retired.

The reality is that we're a fringe title contender right now, and nowhere near being a favourite for the CL. Beating last season's CL runners represents progress, and to be sniffy about that is absolutely insane.

Did we learn anything from that win that we didn't already know?

Didn't we already know United can play five at the back and get a favourable result away against another European top club?

Didn't we already know that this United side thrives when being the underdog, ie not expected to win?

Didn't we already know that United can win narrow games thanks to penalties, and do we know that the penalties will sooner or later dry up?

Solkjaer's quest to turn United into a plucky midtable club is def succeeding.

When this United side can easily brush aside the likes of Crystal Palace/Tottenham at home, when the pressure is still on, with a swagger befitting of one of the biggest clubs in the world, that's when Solkjaer can start proving everyone wrong. A win in the CL group stage against a poor PSG side fielding such mediocrity as Kean, Herrera and Kurzawa, is no impressive feat at all.
either a wind up, or you have the most miserable life I can imagine, whereby you can’t enjoy a win from the team you support.

Football fandom 101 is taking every big game win as if it's worthy of a trophy, and taking every loss so hard you want the heads of the owners of the club on stakes, burning in your front garden.

Anything in between is just weird.

Keep a clean shit tomorrow, United is my final bus
We'll wait and see. We've been here once before, going into a run of games bang out of form with questions being asked of Solskjaer, only to boss it. Either we have turned the corner and these players are actually pretty damn good (our backup players just beat PSG), in which case we'll probably win the league in such a crazy year. Or we'll do well in this period only to come down with a bang once the pressure is off and we're playing teams that come to defend.

Let's just enjoy our wins. We have seen upsets before in CL. Remember when Porto and even Chelsea won it.
Why can't we do it with some luck. The only side I mighty fear is Bayern who look like the strongest side around.

Enjoy when we win. We bossed them. Ole got it right, players put an impeccable performance. What else not to enjoy?

Exactly. Not just enjoy but the win was so satisfying in footballing sense it was like watching a top class team. One of the best performance I witnessed post SAF.

It's clear the OP would prefer to see us lose and Ole get sacked, rather than us dominate and beat a team that played in last years CL final in their own back yard.

If you can't enjoy last night then just stop watching your team. Most aren't getting carried away, it still doesn't mask the awful start. The shape and work rate were a joy to watch. Things are very uncertain, you have to enjoy good performances when they happen.

Don't know if this is a wum or not.

What i would say is that Utd shouldn't feel inferior to any team right now. No team is like Barca 09.

We have goalscorers, a solid defence, great goalkeepers, creative and hardworking midfielders, Players that can make an impact from the bench. We aren't perfect, but I don't think any team is right now.

There are so many fans on caf. So you will find extreme reactions both positive and negative which hardly makes sense. There are people calling Rashford as trash, Ole as trash and genius, Shaw as world class, Martial as trash and genius etc.
There might never be a caf opinion.

By the way, your thread is pretty early. The usual is have couple of days of nonsensically positive threads, before people settle down and then the don't get carried away threads come out.

We learned some new things though:
  • Shaw is better fit for LCB than left back, let alone wingback
  • Lindelof can be a fine defender if surrounded by pace (same applies to Maguire I'm sure)
  • we should not fear any wingers against Wan Bissaka, PSG was at tough game as it gets with Mbappe and Neymar coming at him
  • Fred and McTominay didn't crumble when pressed (although this PSG side wasn't particularly great, they still have quality all over the pitch)
Most importantly we've won because we've been the better team overall, not relying on individual brilliance. That certainly is a good sign, and hopefully we'll gain some momentum now. About time for big league games.
I agree with most of this except the AWB part. Solly March and Wilf Zaha have so far made him look like Bambi on ice. Not sure what happened in those matches but he was a big part of the problems we faces against those teams.
Last night he was excellent and that should be the level he needs to reach every week.

Danilo, Herrera and whoever else was an awful midfield for sure.

Over the moon however for the performances of AwB and Tuanzebe.

They both dealt with Neymar and Mbappe like it was nothing.

Mauricio my dear boy, you will not be manager of Manchester United, cause you are not as good as your fanbois on Caf think.

Yet another thread to ignore, regardless if it is a wum or not.
Bye.

The main thing I finally learned from this win against PSG is that Ole actually has a set of balls and it confirmed to me that he isn't completely tactically inept.

I trust Ole a hell of a lot more now than at any other point of his reign, so fair dues.

This is exactly what following a football team is about. We're fans not the manager, or the players or whatever. We get to enjoy the games, cheer the victories, sulk at the defeats. It's part and parcel of the football experience. It's not getting carried away, it's having fun. There were loads of people who were negative when the group was drawn, even before the match. Neymar this, Mbappe that - our boys stuffed them. We get to gloat for a bit.

The biggest obstacle standing in Ole’s way is his inability to produce results on a consistent basis. He’s had two runs in which we actually did dominate bottom 10 teams, and big away wins in which the tactics and the players were fighting for every ball. This thread may be poorly timed, but the fact that managers at the level were aspiring to need to be able to do both cannot be argued. Neither can the fact that Ole has not been able to do both.

Oh, and Sancho, Haaland and Bellingham got dicked 3-1 to Lazio, last night!
