Think a 2nd place in the Ballon in 1999 is a generous enough reflection of his performance level.
Nope. Should have won in 1999, 2001 not sure although he had more 1st place votes than Figo. People overstate Keane's influence on the team's performance in the CL. Beckham was the difference maker. All the important moments were directly tied to his right foot. When a team wins the treble, the Ballon d'Or has to be from that team. Simple.

Also believe that being the greatest crosser of the ball in pro football entitles him to a seat at the table. His image as a golden boy played against him.

There's a lot of people on here who would side with Keane as the most influential player in 1998/99.

Either way, I thought Rivaldo was phenomenal that year. A one-man band at times for Barcelona: the key man behind their La Liga title, various talismanic performances in the Champions League, and player of the tournament as Brazil won the Copa America. In the 1990s, only Ronaldo in 1997 and Matthaus in 1990 were as convincingly clear Ballon D'Or winners IMO.

Bumping this as today marks 16 years since United ended Arsenal’s 49 match unbeaten run. Arsenal fans all over Twitter saying it was a robbery. Biggest myth ever. United were fecked over by the ref in that game also.
