The team did. With that kind of protection Upamacano would be laughing
Yep, and you saw without protection upamacano turns into an off form Maguire!

(This is my slightly smug way of saying all defenders need help from midfield)

How do you guys know which one is which? I couldn't tell who was Konaté and who was Upamecano. The one who headed the ball twice was impressive.

Although Upemecano is better than today’s performance, just goes to show how as United fans we always think grass is greener on the other side. No doubt he’s always been comfortable on the ball but Mags and Lindleof would’ve been slaughtered today for half the mistakes he made

You all saw his talent and mobility, but he did get found out one too many times. As a defender, you do have to respect and know the opposition's strengths. And compounding that, he is the leader of that backline and has to marshal it much better. They got exposed and torn apart. Yes it happens, but damn...that was a massive lesson tonight for him and his team and manager.

 my God I’m just after watching the replay of him trying to get back after that forward burst.

He’s clearly a very good player, just needs his manager to tell him to chill with the gung ho runs into the opposition goal.

We would be mental to go for him. Was absolutely shocking when he lost the ball and just totally refused to run back into position in the second half. Disgraceful performance from a supposed defender .

We need a new CB target. Close thread.
Haha. He's only turned 22 and has all the attributes to be a world class centre back for years to come. What he has to improve on is his tactical awareness and decision making and he'll continue to improve that.

They played a back 3 and basically 5 at the back!!
Thats what we played against Chelsea too but with far more defensive players, they also have less quality due to less money invested. And they had more of the ball than we had against Chelsea. They got mindf'd and fell off a cliff after Rashford's first goal was given on VAR but until then they had a decent amount coming forward

Better on the ball than anyone we have. Got doubts about him in a back 4 instead of a back 5 though. Today, he showed his flaws and inconsistency which for his experience shouldn't be shocking. Obviously the hype he had would make you think he is the finished article but he really isn't

Got rinsed in the second multiple times, which - as people have rightly pointed out - Maguire and Lindelof would have been crucified for had it been the other way round, however think he showed some serious quality in the first half.

I can easily get behind a ridiculously unattainable Kimpembe rumour to be fair.

Good on the ball but that was about it today. Personally I think the weaknesses we could see last season were exploited over and over again. He has poor awareness and doesn’t know what happens behind him. Also makes some strange decisions and attacks the ball too much, leaving his area unprotected. And just like last season he doesn’t run home to help and recover when he has lost the ball.

Horrible performance. Even on his marauding run he gave us the ball and we broke up the pitch. Actually think that run broke him for the rest of the game. Good passing but badly at fault for 3 goals.

Dig up stupid!
I thought he did quite well until we went up a gear second half

His issue was also leipzigs in general in that they had no patience, over commited over and over despite getting picked off at will

He's got the tools though, could see him partnering maguire

They are slaughtered when they do make mistakes like he did make tonight. The difference is he's young and isnt making those mistakes quite as often, while also contributing more on the ball

Oh he will. But not with United. We should focus on Mengi and Tuanzebe.

Lost the ball high up the field which led to the handball pen shout..
Lost the ball there and Cavani scored (offside)

Shit game really..

Not saying he is a bad defender.. but all defenders make mistakes.. people need to stop overreacting everytime one of ours does.
Best when all "experts" are giving him the big build up and you know they know feck all about him apart from what they have heard / read due to his recent transfer speculation.

As someone else pointed out, it’s a bit of a case of the grass is always greener.

but also, a Utd player will always be under more scrutiny than a RBL player. He can get away with mistakes, and people won’t notice, our players cannot.

Did the same thing against PSG in the CL semi final last season.

One bad game doesn't make a player bad.

But yeah he was truly awful in that second half. First half thought he was okay.

Pretty much. He’s a good player but not the finished article. We simply had too much firepower in the last 20 minutes for them to handle and it wasn’t helped by them having no midfield to speak of protecting the the defence.

it’s no shock our defence looks better when we have Fred and Matic/McTominay sitting in front of them.

I think Leipzig tactics rely on him bringing the ball out from defence too much. We set the traps well in the 2nd half to counter when he brought the ball out.
