So sad to hear this today.

I remember him coming to sign autographs at St. Greg's in Ardwick, not far of course from Collyhurst where he grew up, in the autumn after Utd had won the European Cup in 1968.

A lovely man off the pitch and as hard as nails on it.

R.I.P. Nobby, a fine Mancunian and Utd player.

Had the privilege to meet the great man at the Trafford centre whilst getting his signature in his autobiography. Was only 14 or so but already knew of his legend like status. Really humble and respectful. Just a proper nice guy.
RIP Nobby

Couple of videos for you:

Thanks for that, fine tributes to a Utd legend.
Brings back memories of being allowed to stay up and watch the European Cup Final in 1968 (by my dad who was a City fan!) - in black and white then, of course.
The quagmire pitches as well!

Good to see it pointed out that Nobby Stiles was more than just a hatchet man.

'Little Nobby' as Denis Law called him, with respect. As well as Nobby's family and friends, I'm particularly sad for Bobby Charlton tonight because he and the Nobster were lifelong mates. If the words 'United legend' still mean something then Nobby Stiles was definitely one. He made Bite Your Legs Norman Hunter look like a teenage ballerina. Still many questions to be asked about footballers of that generation and Alzheimers/dementia, of course. RIP Norbert Stiles. 1966, 1968, never forgotten.

Nobby was and is known for some fearsome tackling but he could play a bit of football too. Matt Busby and Alf Ramsey were no fools and he knew that Stiles could find a really decent pass and get attacks moving. Quickly. RIP

Good to see you turned out alright, in the end, despite you're upbringing ;)

Yup! North Manchester and Salford were Utd, south and east Manchester were City and we were 15 mins walk from Maine Road, but that European Cup had a lot to do with making me a Utd fan. Stayed with them through the dark times in the 1970s and kept the faith ever since.

Would be great if we could get a result for Nobby on Sunday!

That game is tattooed on a lot of hearts.

Absolute legend of a player for both United and England. Great fella, who always has time to chat with supporters after a match. RIP Nobby.

I think you are overstating the amount of City support :smirk:

"Alf always called me by my full name of Norbert. Just before the Portugal match he took me to one side and said: 'Norbert, I want you to take Eusebio out,'" Stiles said.

"I replied: 'Do you mean for the game Alf, or for good?'"

Remember a Cup game against Chester at Old Trafford, Nobby at half time was searching around the centre circle for one of his contact lenses which had fallen out. What a mid field enforcer 60 years before the term was thought of, saw him when if memory is correct when he made his debut against Bolton in 1960. A true Utd., legend which many do not remember.

I'm just going on The Caf
I remember being at Old Trafford when Michael Aspel came on the pitch before a game to do This is Your Life on Nobby. And during the programme you could tell the love all his team mates and all who knew him had for Nobby.
One of those players who every successful side needs, a battler and fearless.
RIP Nobby .

A very nice man our Nobby! Met him outside Ringway (Manchester) airport, May 68. Me and a couple of mates wagged it from school and made are way to the airport to meet the team after the heroic 3-3 draw at the Bernebeu. Bestie had given us a one goal lead going into the 2nd leg. We were in the final!
We bumped into Nobby outside on his own and we walked with him to the carpark where he was getting his lift. It was like having another mate with you. Couldn't believe we had a World Cup winner as part of our gang for 10 mins.
On the field he was our Nobby "Capone"

An ordinary bloke, a real man, a hero. Indelibly part of my teenage years growing up in Manchester. RIP Nobby, they don't make them like you any more.

RIP Nobby from the blue half. Legend of legends. Imagine Nobby in the Prem - he'd only have to look at some of the fairies in today's game and they'd go down screaming and holding their heads. You'll never be forgotten great man.

I hate to say his but he was a legend but so was Ron Chopper Harris. You know why i'm making this comparison i.e. they were dirty & nasty players, so was Tommy Smith at Liverpool, Kenny Burns at Notts Forrest & half the Leeds team of that era. Others could easily be mentioned too!

Praising players who relentlessly kicked their opponents off the ball is not the kind of player we should celebrate nor respect. People can say "he was from a different era" but Bobby Charlton, John Charles & Kevin Keegan & they never ever, ever behaved like the above players did.

Italians, Spanish & south American players of Nobby's era were deservedly slaughtered for identical behaviour, please don't stoop to double standards folks due to nostaligia.

Good, im glad they don't. As much as i genuinely & sincerely hate how some of the game has "evolved" over the past 30-40 years, i will always look down my nose at players like Nobby, Ron Chopper Harris, Kenny Burns (Forrest), Tommy Smith & practically the entire Leeds Utd team.

I'm more of a John Charles, Bobby Charlton & Kevin Keegan sort of fan & nostalgia does not influence my thinking about players of Nobby's grossly un sportsman-like behaviour & like ilk.

For his family & friends, my thoughts & emotions are with them, he will have left a great void which may never ever be able to be filled.

RIP Nobby... always struck me how underrated he was. More than just a destroyer for me, his effervescent energy off the ball and always looking to offer an option always caught my eye. Nimble too, so did not really get caught on the ball much either thus trustworthy in possession against top sides. Not massively skilled granted, but very efficient on and off the ball.

The sports reporter on Radio 4 was choking up doing his obituary. Apparently Nobby was a regular guest on Radio 4 in the 80s. The presenter was very fond of him. The CAF will probably be disappointed to learn that Nick Robinson is a big United fan.

What a load of bollocks! In fairness I wasn't around then, but everyone of my elders who was has told me that Stiles was nothing like Harris. He actually had a bit of talent and athleticism for a start. Harris was pure hatchet man, through and through.

Stiles was no saint and did the dirty work on a team of supremely talented players, but don't lump him in with a dinosaur like Harris.

RIP Nobby, one of United's and England's unsung heroes.
The guy in the team who did the dirty work, tackling, closing down, pressing etc, never afraid to leave his mark. Without him Bobby Charlton, Paddy Crerand et al would never have had the freedom to express themselves, and had the opportunity to attack teams, think of Fred in today's squad, does the nitty gritty work that tends to go unappreciated, and therefore, unloved by football purists.
Not many of the World Cup winning team left now.

Agree with this except Nobby was a really decent passer of the ball - I'm still not sure about Fred in this regard.

I saw him play a few times. He was more than just a crunch tackle merchant. He could run all day and also pass with accuracy. Nothing if him but he was never bullied unlike some of these muppets we have today playing for us.
