Nani's Ridiculous Red Card (not the one vs Real Madrid)

Laces first (not studs) and got the ball cleanly. Shouldn't have been a foul, never mind a yellow card changed to a red after VAR review. My thought was the the panel asked the ref to look at it in hopes of realizing that he got the call wrong and would change it. I know VAR isn't used to review free kicks and yellow cards, but in the spirit of the game, I would hope he came to that conclusion. Then the ref can make headlines for eventually coming to the right decision despite that decision being against what VAR is used for as opposed to making headlines for being an incompetent twat...

I haven’t seen this new one but I know it won’t be as bad as the one against Madrid.

I still feel the urge to throw things violently whenever I think about that Turkish ref.

Just read that it was rescinded after a review panel checked it. This is more a referee issue than a VAR issue, how he can review the same footage and come to a completely different conclusion to an independent panel is shocking, could almost assume some corruption
This exactly - unfortunately just incompetence from a ref. Can only assume the ref isn't fit for professional football because how he went to the VAR and reached that conclusion is criminal (the on field decision is a bad decision but not that crazy) because it's clear and obvious that it's not even a foul.

American refs (and their instructors) can be very strict. Don't know if it's still the case, but not that long ago I remember becoming aware of them sending lots of players off for elbows/arm contact when jumping for headers that just wouldn't be reds in England or lots of other places where the contact would be deemed as accidental, perhaps a yellow, perhaps not and just a bit of an unfortunate thing to happen all round.

Seen instructor videos on the handball rules that came in where they were big fans of the very strict interpretations too.

At least the panel overruled this one so it hasn't come from the top that this should be deemed a two-footed suds up lunge, which I think what the ref and the VAR must have thought it was to give the red in the first place.

The referee organisation in America produce a short video each week where they play some audio clips and comment on some decisions. The Nani one is discussed at 3.57 in the latest video (I'm not allowed to post media yet but if you search Inside Video Review on Youtube and go to the most recent one you should find it.)

The view of the referee organisation was a red card was incorrect.

Baffling. I remember seeing it a few times on my mobile without understanding what I didn’t see on my small screen. Turns out, my eyes are pretty decent... the state of that decision, again, utterly baffling.

As hard as it is to top that one, I think this one is worse. Absolute disgrace.

Imagine this kind of transparency with the refereeing in the PL. Just imagine.

Still haven't seen it but it can't outweigh the importance of that Madrid game, Champions League knockout stage compared to an MLS game (no disrespect to the MLS like.)

Edit; Just saw the new one and yeah it's nowhere near as bad as the Madrid one, imo at least. It's definitely not a red imo but at the same time, by the letter of the law, the follow through could be deemed as out of control.
The Madrid one is totally unintentional, just trying to control the ball, everybody in the stadium and people watching at home could see that.

From that perspective I can agree. See that game through and we'd probably have another CL. From a refereeing perspective this one is weird, especially given that VAR was used.

Yeah just updated my last post, I don't think it's as bad as the Madrid one as the follow through connects with the players ankle but with the use of VAR there is absolutely no reason to send him off.

I think what they've done is focus in on the follow through and more or less ignored the full contact with the ball before it.

Honestly I think he deserved a 2nd yellow based on the constant yapping at the referee off the back of the yellow card (from a challenge that actually warranted a straight red).

Would love to see that. Fans would eat it up. How did that last review not end up a broken leg or torn ligaments?

I don’t understand the issue.

that is a possible red card and the ref made the decision he made.

Whether VAR is used correctly is another matter entirely but I’m not shocked by the final decision
Why did the ref have to deliver the red card like such an arrogant tw*t? It must drive players mad when they do that and then point to the sideline and refuse to engage with you.

I don't blame the ref, VAR is a stupid idea. Nani could program a better system.. If there was anything to program. But oh yes, the "technology" (bloke rewinding a VHS in a van outside) must never be questioned. Future and shit.

I have no idea and don’t care.

I guess some referees are just arrogant. A bit like some footballers being arrogant, I guess

I'll allow this as I know that opticians aren't doing close proximity eye tests due to covid.
I don't think its a red, but its not a million miles off is it?

Its one of those ones where the player had no intention of hurting his opponent, but the still-frame looks really bad. Yellow was correct I think.

I understand how bad that picture looks, but that picture is after Nani had gotten the ball first. He didn't even lunge in with force or anything. Its a soft yellow in my opinion but no way a red.

I’m also fed up of seeing footballers completely disregard the referee’s authority. You don’t see it in any other professional sport. Referee needs to be more willing with showing cards for persistent yapping.

Ah right, so as long as you get the ball first you can be as wreckless as you like?

I can see why he gave the red, but you can't use a still picture without the context of the full movement of the player. Incompetent refereeing.

As for Cuneyt Cakir, we'll never forget... Early in my match going life. Gave me nightmares for weeks!

This is definitely a thing, but you also don’t see referees in other sports make such bad decisions so regularly. Referee attitudes should change too.

Are you a referee?

Personally I think the video referees and refereeing pundits they've added into the mix in the last couple of years have just shown how much the refs get wrong. Before you could give the caveat that they made this decision in live time under pressure, and errors under those circumstances are completely inevitable. Now when they get this time to reflect and still make those calls, it gets a bit silly. The refereeing pundits contradict themselves all the time on really obvious decisions. Whatever way they learned the rules, they seemingly end up not understanding the game very well.

Potential ankle breaker. Dangerous and slightly wreckless play. Easy red. Not my fault you boys are blind.
The thing is if we'd stop frame every 50-50, there'd be plenty of ground to book people right and left.
Hence there is more parameters that need to be considered as rightly pointed out on that video above.
