This won't be an issue, Newcastle sit still this weekend and play next weekend then the FA fits that Replay on Wednesday the week after. No biggy.

Cancel the Cups and cancel the Nations League and International friendlies until this is all over

Always thought this would happen and could reduce entire league into a complete farce.
Not sure how they will find slots in the calendar to replay cancelled or delayed matches.

Theres plenty of room in the calender for teams not playing in Europe

This is a blindingly obvious thing to do, whey they are continuing travel to other countries is just stupid, bubble or no bubble.

What is the issue? Newcastle next few games are against teams not in Europe. I imagine it will be moved to next week. You can't shut down football and businesses for 2 years until a vaccine comes out. Not sustainable for the economy. There may even not be a vaccine possible.
What planet are you on?

If I didn't read the Caf I would never have known this had even happened. Nothing on Sky Sports or the BBC which is mad considering it's a pretty big story.

Mike Ashley will be selling it in sports direct soon enough.

the sport has been lucky to get this far into the season with relatively few incidents like this. There have been a few games in the lower leagues called off. Newcastle aren’t in Europe, so no big issue hopefully.

should still void the *Title from last season mind.

in years to come, we can hopefully just erase 2020 from the history books. I’m semi serious about that - would be great if we could (nothing to do with football).

Was just about to say, this hardly seems like big news for some reason. I imagine it's because Newcastle to measures in advance - maybe a few youth players or whatever got it and just in case they said everyone home for a few days. If they are still self isolating after their last test before the game then there is a problem

Its an issue as they were playing Palace at the weekend and could have quite easily infected a member of their team, if that's no caught a palace player could infect someone in their next upcoming fixture. Its not certain no, but it highlights the problem with COVID.

Is it wrong that one of my first thoughts was that I wish I'd have seen this as it was breaking so I could bey heavily on their next opponents in case it goes ahead with youth players?

The odds must have already been adjusted by now.

surprised its took so long to be fair, suppose with how dodgy the clubs have been its no surprise. but surely they will just need to play the younger players ?

Damage has already been done with that. Next international break isn't until late March so hopefully by then vaccine roll out will be widespread.

I did read a while ago if you have 11 available players and 3 subs you'd be forced to play but no way can Newcastle if all their squad is self isolating.

There was a case in Spain a few weeks back of Granada having to play with a mixture of first teamers and youth team players, even got fined for not having a health inspector with them when they played in europe.

Null and void the season I say. Let the players rest and recover from injuries too while the vaccine rolls out properly.
not happening.... not in a million years

yeah, can easily postpone a couple of games and play midweek, not a big deal, not that they play in Europe or stay in the cups till later stages either..

The game won't even be postponed. The new covid rules state that 14 members of the first team must all be positive with covid for the game to be considered for abandonment.

" It's understood that 14 players would have to be ruled out for the club to move to cancel the match - but the Premier League would count under-23s with experience around the senior squad as viable options to fulfil the fixture "

Seems a little vague, but they can be forced to fill the team with under 23's with "experience" around the squad. Which seems a bit flimsy, as i'd imagine newcastle would want the game postponed and i'm not sure how the premier league can prove that their under 23's have experience around the squad. Whatever the hell that means? Eaten food in the same canteen? Had the odd training game? Again, how would they prove that? Newcastle would just say we only have a couple that meet the criteria.

We've had about 10 games postponed up until now in Belgium. Teams that don't play in Europe play during the week to catch up, it's hardly an issue at this point.

You would think that they had been tested before and the Palace players have probably been tested.
But I was referring to the schedule not how the Virus is wreaking havoc, that in it self is known.

Happens in the NFL now and then. They just push the game a few days until they control the outbreak, and then separate those who have it and those that don't until a certain amount of negative tests in consecutive days and then that's the squad you have available. Its different in football, but still doable, especially with teams not in Europe as they don't have midweek games. For a European team it would be a bit fecked as they already play twice every week.

That'll be caught by one of the many tests they all get every week.

This was always on the cards and with a largely condensed season, along with an already delayed European Championships afterwards, it was a massive risk to take. I thought this would have happened sooner. Realistically, at least the League Cup should have been cancelled this season, maybe the FA Cup too.

However, on one hand, the FA might get a little lucky seeing as this is lower placing side. As long as this doesn't happen to more teams (big if, and particularly if it's a team competing in a European competition) it could be OK. The timing is also somewhat favourable. Newcastle will probably only miss the game against Villa, maybe West Brom at a push (but that can move to Sunday or Monday just to be sure as it would be past 11 days already anyway). It shouldn't be too difficult to slot in one or two fixtures into mid-week later in the season. As said previously though, if this happens to multiple teams, it can quickly become impossible to reschedule everything.

When Leyton Orient had to postpone their Cup game recently...what was the outcome?
Spurs went to the next round to play Chelsea.

They also played their postponed league 2 game a week or so later.

Newcastle will apparently test their whole squad again tomorrow afternoon so I assume final decision will be made then as they'll have opportunity to train on Thursday if enough of them are negative.

In a giant needle with Sports Direct emblazoned on it. They’ll chuck it in your bag whether you want it or not when you buy something over £50

What’s to stop a team with loads of injuries saying ‘ah shit, sorry FA bosses, half the squad have symptoms, we will have to postpone our next game’
