Paul Pogba to Juventus - key man in their domestic dominance, carried them to CL final, sold for world record fee, and even now they're desperate to get him back.

Lewa. We should do what Bayern do but with younger English players. Say the likes of grealish. We should have been tapping that up for the last 2 years and offering CL wages. He Doesn’t sign a new deal and we get him for peanuts the final year or free in the summer. Solid business model

Ever? Puskás to Real Madrid, without a shadow of a doubt — to join the club at age 31 and do what he did is an irreplaceable feat.

Tempted to go with Lewandowski for the post-1995 period. His statistical resumé is phenomenal and he banished some of his Champions League demons last season.

If I remember correctly, it was known for over a year Lewa was joining Bayern on a free. I had 2 questions:

1. How does this not count as tapping up?
2. I think Dortmund STILL gave him a pay rise in the summer before he left but no extension. Why did they do that?

They promised Lewandowski to sell him (to Bayern) 1 year before he was out of contract. They basically had an agreement for this months before.

But in that season, things had changed. They unexpectedly lost Götze to Bayern too due to an release clause and Bayern offered very low money (15-20m) for Lewandowski because they knew they can get him for free next season.

So they couldn't afford to lose Lewandowski in the same year to Bayern too. So they told him "Sorry, we can't let you go for cheap to Bayern this season. We have lost one of our best players (Götze) already. To compensate you we will raise your paycheck without extending the contract, because we promised you something else".

And it worked out, Lewandowski delivered without moaning, was by far Dortmund's best player that season, and then he went for free to Bayern.

Ronaldo to Madrid was basically free considering what they achieved with him and who we replaced him with. But it's hard to look past the players posted above.

Ah OK, that makes a lot of sense - thank you. Forgot they lost Gotze that same summer, thought it was the year before. Surprised they didn't try and take the piss by going for Reus too.... though I imagine they did and he said no

Reus is a different personality. He is not the ship jumper type.

Bayern went for Reus when he was at Gladbach but there was no clear pathway to the first team for him at that time with Robben and Ribery at their prime before Dortmund went for him

You should have done that for Kane 3years ago

100% it’s only the clubs who care about the transfer fees. Players just want the wages and to play the highest standard of football they can. I was pulling my hair out thinking we were going to spend 40 million on Brooks as a squad player. Just tap him up and use the 40 million to pay his wages instead. I know it sucks for the selling club but grealish is now 80/90 million plus his wages. Crazy money

The Lewandowski transfer has to be the one. Pirlo's transfer was unbelievable, but Lewandowski's one is just another tier above that, considering his stats and what he has won before and after, and his age at the time. Can't help but feel for Dortmund with that one, to not get a sizeable fee for the player must have felt gut-wrenching.

It should also be added, that those transfers are not „free“. Well, the club the player is leaving is not receiving money, but the player and his agents are. And more than for a normal transfer.

Lewa, because it was the "perfect free transfer". It utterly fecked their closest rivals who haven't won a title since.

Bayern's best ever Bundesliga run of wins was 3 before 2013, they've now done a clean sweep of 8.

Ridiculous free transfer, taking Hummels and Lewa cemented Bayern's position for the next decade.

Perhaps greatest of all time is not the best question I like @duffer asking for the best free for each team.
Definitely zlatan for us although we seem to enjoy paying more than we need to for players....

Never understood why we weren't in for him that summer, would have walked the 4 in a row.
The 99 and 00 transfer windows were really bizarre for United chasing history. I had fully expected they would have signed a top tier defender in summer 2000 after getting Barthez. Then not even making an offer for Campbell, that I know of, in 2001 was odd. Then selling Stam. Really weird times.
