My Mrs is an amazing nurse who has been on the front line of this shit for a year.

She doesn't want you to bang a saucepan. She wants the free parking that Robin Swann promised in a press conference but never delivered. She pays £5 per day to go to work and help people - and got Covid for 5 weeks in the process.
Why would all NHS employees be entitled to free parking? Serious question.

Because it costs so much, it's their place of work.

Personally I think it's wrong to charge anyone because they need to be there.

Loads of people have to pay to get to and from work though. In York for example, the patients and hospital staff have to pay to park on site. Free parking is available outside of the hospital grounds with a 5 or ten minute walk from there.
I wasn't having a go at the poster by the way, just that I suppose if any parking on site is free, my priorities would be for the old and infirm.
I'm not sure if every hospital charges for parking now, but I'm pretty certain most city ones are going that way.
Where does the money from the parking go by the way?

I don't know where the money goes but it is horrendously expensive elsewhere. I had to go to a hospital every morning for 30 days and it cost me in total over £200. I could hardly walk to the building far less walk from further but that's not really my point I suppose, it's that these buildings belong to us, we have to be there just as health workers have to be there to help us. I feel it's wrong, just an opinion is all because I remember a time when we didn't have to pay to visit out patients or our relatives. It's just money grubbing mostly from people who can ill afford it.

If the April one is anyhting to go by then it'll just end up spreading the virus even more.

People standing in the road to clap, front doors too close to their neighbours, the street 'clique' having chat afterwards, etc.

Be the right thing to give it a miss this time and save NHS even more patients maybe.

It's just the way it is now, people love to pretend they're doing something to help or appreciating someone when really, they just want some Facebook video to post for likes and that kinda rubbish. It makes them feel loved.

People banging pots and pans on their doorsteps while Nightshift staff try to get their sleep is ridiculous.

The woman who started this bollocks probably has it on her CV.

Apart from the venting online, yes,

the woman actually walked up and down the road in our village, (theres only one road in our village) clapping furiously and geeing everyone else up to clap louder, fecking cringeworthy. The clapping only started once she had left her house for patrol and finished once she was back at her driveway. Embarrasing.
Can you video this for us?

She's been in the media enough. She even wrote a long article about setting the thing up that mentioned the NHS exactly one time near the end of the whole thing. The rest was pretty much self promotion.

It's the use of a wooden spoon and a frying pan that gets me. Thankfully I wasn't at home enough at that time to hear it on a weekly basis.

Saw a guy with his bagpipes out last lock down. Honestly, most of the people I saw(I was walking my dog at the time) were just out to be seen to be clapping. It wasnt about the nhs workers, its about them being seen.

Personally, I think not being a fecking idiot walking around without a mask is a lot better than clapping for a few minutes. After all, every time one of us doesnt wear a mask, or social distance or wash our hands we risk maybe passing something on that we dont know we have. Im sure NHS workers would much rather have fewer people coming through the door needing help than a bunch of self serving twats clapping at their doors half heartedly for a minute once a week.

Feck off and die with your bullshit Tory clapping.

I was hoping that the swell of seemingly good will early last year would serve as a basis for greater respect for the NHS and frontline staff, and ultimately better pay and work conditions. Given what has happened since it all now looks like it was merely performative wank. This lot of utter bastards in charge of it all are worse than ever.

Your clapping is shit.

It's so that you can no longer say 'actions speak louder than words' when the government talk about supporting the NHS or caring about our heroes.

'Well we are acting, we are clapping, so there'

Cringy as fook.

Vote for a party that makes them amongst the highest paid care staff in the World instead you arseholes.

10 months they’ve had of bullshit restrictions which have done literally jack shit, we’ve all seen the first lockdown was useless, as Summer took care of the first wave all over Europe and the restrictions during the Summer and autumn were nothing short of nonsensical.
Now a lockdown might actually be needed as this wave was always gonna come, as they all do with upper respiratory viruses, slap bang in the middle of Winter rather than late March/April, but the NHS and their staff have received how much help in these 10 months in preparation?

Imagine the money they could have spent on massive NHS staff pay increases, training of new staff and on hospitals in the past 10 months preparing for this possibility rather than spending billions acting like the blind leading the blind.

Hey, but I’m sure your claps will help you feel like good people you sad fecks.

I did quite enjoy going for a run in the first lockdown and waving at all the clapping people in the street so I could pretend they were cheering me home.

My mother in law (a nurse) just said that she's looking forward to peeking out of her window tonight to play another game of Spot The Cnuts.

This thread is a bit unkind. Clapping makes me feel important and I enjoy feeling like I'm doing my bit from the comfort of my own home. You may say it's a self-congratulatory exercise in personal flattery masking genuine attempts to better people's wellbeing and invoke better procedures for people whose job is simply to care for others but I don't give a shit. I'll be clapping away those negative vibes. My claps will drown out your blues.

You guys are funny

Whilst I agree with the general consensus that it's bollocks, a load of people standing outside, cheek-by-jowl clapping isn't going to help anyone apart from their own self esteem.

The number of posts proclaiming "I'm not clapping because, Tories" what a bunch of self righteous cnuts you are too. Are you saying that if it was Andy Burnham's idea to do this you'd all be out with your pots and pans like good Socialists? Do you think that Labour MPs weren't joining in? If you disagree, disagree, but don't pretend the only reason you disagree is because of your political views.

I get that there must be many NHS staff who don't appreciate it, but we saw plenty of video on the news of hospital staff standing outside hospitals, far too close together, clapping along.

I think this thread is a bit unfair.

Yeah, what should be happening is that the government should be funding the NHS properly rather than backing this gesture however I wouldn't take it out on the people participating.

On my street, there are 4-5 people who did it each Thursday during the lockdown without fail. These were mainly single, elderly people who diligently stay inside with little contact to the outside world. Those 2-3 minutes at 8pm on a Thursday was their moment to connect in a safe way. Not everybody has a social presence online, remember that.

In short, it may be self-indulgent but it's also (in my area, Stockport, about as Labour as it gets) coming from a good place.

After considering your excellent point, I have changed my view and will now be curbside clapping with one hand and masturbating with the other, over a picture of our glory-Tory cabinet. Cum for Boris.

Who doesn't need to be there? No one is going for a recreational visit!

Don't forget, these lonely old people are extremely pro-royalist and hate foreigners too!
Nobody is perfect Col. Maybe that's why they are lonely old people. Let's try to not be them one day eh?
