Lingard just reassuring everyone that his career will be somewhere else in the championship.
James needing a loan spell with another premiership club.
Still not convinced on Rashford as an out an out striker with his finishing.
Rashford much more influential on the left hand side rather than the right.

Under Fergie we put many a second string side out early in Cup runs just to grind out a result. This was no different. After viewing the team selection how anyone expected a 6-0 thumping is beyond me. Job done. Bring on the next game.

Typical early cup game with players who aren't starting in the first team for a reason.

Move on.

Horrible game..

but we won, Bruno got a rest and our fringe players got a run out.
Yeah the important thing was to get through to the next round and give some of the first XI a decent rest, know that Rashford & Martial came on but had nearly 70 mins rest each and Bruno a complete one which was much needed for him. Was also very surprised that Ighalo didn't get a cameo after being talked up for it by Ole pre match.

Dull and uneventful, but I've become a bit used to us making the easier games more difficult.
Closer to the next semis bottle job(Sarcasm).

Interestingly, didn't Ole say that Ighalo would be involved today?
He's not kept his word has he? Unless the bench counts as "involved", it's a bit damning when you say something and do another.
He's either forgotten or just decided to forego that idea.

Ideally, shouldn't have said anything in the press then.

We're through with minimal effort, and our important players have been rested. I'll take that.

McT is really growing on me. Solid and fearless in the middle, and contributes on both ends of the pitch. Man of the match tonight.

Other than that no one was outstanding and no one was terrible. Just enough to get the job done.

It's a pity, Bailly getting that injury. Hope it's nothing serious.

Henderson - not bad (if not for Bailly incident, but goalkeeping-wise OK)
Telles - one assist, could have another if Bailly scored that header. Defensively not very good
Tuanzebe - did well
Bailly - did well defensively, could score, but his passing was very bad, surprisingly
Williams - very average, only positive was rest for Bissaka. Doesn’t look like a future Man Utd player
McTominay - scored, did well defensively. MotM probably, although his passing is still off
VDB - worse than McTominay, quite weak defensively. Created one great chance for Mata, though - still should say he didn’t grab his opportunity to impress
Lingard - just shit
Mata - must have scored. Struggled on the wing, didn’t create anything special
James - tried very hard, made a few shots (two on target), ran quickly and a lot. But not enough quality is visible
Greenwood - played badly, although received zero service from our magestic trio of Lingard, Mata and James.
Maguire - did well in the second half.
Rashford - got involved, but never switched on even the second gear. End product was lacking
Martial - didn’t give a shit about his cameo, did absolutely nothing
Matic - nothing special in his 10-15 minutes

My man baby face has transformed us. No drama, relying on pure objectivity he’s got his cohorts fulfilling his own winning mentality.

This shit takes time but we seem to rise from adversity now which takes a load of character. He’s done it time and again this isn’t a fluke he’s building this, we don’t see this in press conference but I’m sure he’s got minds focused behind the scenes.

He’s doing it his way. We played shit but we’re through with a second string. Yes we lost a semi but remember it’s a game, Fuk knows how many finals he won last year to get third. I’d take that over a plastic cup.

Yes, players love a trophy but a winner sets his sights higher. Ole you know you think your in this title race now. 20 cups finals now, we can go toe to toe with anyone. Sideshows are a melee, let’s see the encore.

I haven’t seen us play the best in England yet, next Sunday let’s see, big balls gentlemen, I think we have them.

I thought we were generally good and McTominay was our worst player. Which is the polar opposite of almost every comment I’ve read on here. That said I am a bottle of Kraken into the evening so I’ll take the forum’s word for it and accept McT man of the match and it was a shitshow...
He wasn't atrocious per se, but he wasn't amazing, either.

Good:
  • Retained possession well under pressure and brought the ball out into space
  • Won the ball on multiple occasions and contributed to maintaining attacking pressure on Watford on several occasions
  • Good defensive positioning, overall
    • Filled in well for Williams
    • Made a few key clearances from our box
Bad:
  • Conceded a couple of unnecessary fouls late on (total fouls: 2)
  • Sloppy passing (80.4% pass accuracy); in contrast, Donny had 94.6%
The passing was quite noticeable, and I think that's why people are finding his performance to be terrible.

Bailly is a neck thing rather than concussion.

Hopefully that means he's back sooner.

If it's a nerve-related issue, then he might be out for a while. The fact that they were being very careful with him makes me think that it could be a nerve problem.

Yeah I'm probably well off the mark and a light concussion and missing 1 game might end up being the more favourable option.

The keeper didn't half smash him in the neck though!

missed the end, did Ighalo get a run out?
Nope.
Shame in a way he dropped off from being the go to guy for the lesser games and had a decent impact.
And then basically hasn't been seen for months now.

Still , as a fan he probably wouldn't have swapped his time here for anything.

He’s stuck on Instagram that he’s fine. Just a knock. He wanted to come back on.
I'm glad to know that. I'm actually fine with United being as cautious as they were with him. We'll probably be relying on him way more in this run of fixtures.

Job done.

Thought tuanzebe had a good game as did mctom although mctom did give the ball away a little too much. Not much else to report noone was terrible but noone really shone either.

Big boys rested for Burnley and liverpool, Ole 100th first big test's.

Great post! With some lovely stats to back it up, completely agree.

With all the changes, that was never going to be a cohesive display. It's hard to judge players like VDB because of it. He was very unlikely to shine under the circumstances.

Having said that, I expected more after the bright start. We scored and seemed to mentally decide 1-0 was enough, which surprised me. I thought there'd be more energy and drive.

Still, we're in the hat, several important players got a rest and hopefully Bailly is OK and no-one else got injured. It was a good result, if not a memorable match.

As expected, rotational team, evenish match in the end. Deserved to win.

Got to rest players which was good.

Hopefully Bailly isn't too serious.

Hope I never see Lingard again.

About the best result we could expect and hope for playing James, Lingard and Mata together as an attacking trio.

All 3 did quite well considering they were up against superior opposition.

Saw the goal but had to bail to tend to an emergency at a client. Glad we won but surprised I saw the only goal. Must have been a sleeper of a match.

We’re just so remarkably dull to watch a large percentage of the time. I don’t know why we can’t sustain attacks for anymore than about ten minutes in a game.

With these sort of games, not only are we not playing our best players, but we are fielding a team that is not used to playing together as a team, hence it looks so disjointed. Just getting through to the next round is the aim. We did that.

Abysmal watch but for as long as I've watched United every time we rest a whole team it's always disjointed as feck and people complain that our backups aren't good enough
This. Won, never really looked in danger of conceding, wank football but Jesse Lingard started a game for us at no.10, what did anyone expect?

I agree, we must not lose the memory of history. Remember a drab 0-0 game against Exeter in non-league at the time.
Of course you would want a better performance, but as long as the third round is won then it's allright.

Ole says Pogba, Shaw and Victor all injured. Bailly to have a scan but hopes it’s nothing serious

A bit unfair to criticise half the team when a lot of them are probably struggling for match sharpness as they have barely played at all this season.

Remember how it took fred a prolonged run in the side to start finally looking decent for united

Good for 25 minutes but we went flat as a pancake after that. Good to get through but the Bailly injury is a blow.

Fell asleep before the game, and had a dream about friends and acquaintances from past and present being really drunk right outside my apartment door. Turned out there had been an alleged rape out there. One guy had been taken to the hospital with a smashed penis, so I could only assume he was the culprit. But then again, I didn't want to assume, cause he's a friend of mine, and she's frankly a bit of a nutter. Everyone was getting extremely loud, so neighbours started showing up to complain. I tried explaining to the neighbours that although I know these people, I didn't invite them here. They weren't having any of that though, so had to get them out of the building somehow.

So I made an attempt to calm people down, trying to figure out just what exactly happened, but couldn't make much sense of what people were saying. Some were still jolly drunk - in spite of what just happened - and wanted to come inside to continue the party. But that wasn't really going to happen since I have a 1 month old child in here. Girlfriend got extremely aggressive towards them, which in truth I found rather unattractive - it's not in her character to act that way. But there she was, waving fingers and what have you, not really helping the situation at all.

Then I woke up with a fever, and a stomach ache which probably is diverticulitis (I've had it before, so I know what it feels like). So I suppose this was some sort of feverish nightmare.

5/10. If it wasn't for the diverticulitis I'd give it an 8 for the sheer delight of waking up.
