If he's convicted in the senate which looks likely then he can't run for office ever again, right? So it's a moot point either way?
That requires a separate vote, but if it gets to that point I’d imagine that happens as it is only a simple majority on that point to keep him out of politics permanently if I recall.

As I understand it, If convicted the Senate would have to hold a second vote on banning him from holding office again.. and importantly this would require just a simple majority to pass.

Truth like rain don't give a feck who it falls on.
I dont think it is likely.
I would think it is. Turtle Mitch is already saying he thinks he committed impeachable offences, his GOP supporters are leaving in droves and now he's threatening to do something that will siphon supporters from the GOP, fragmenting their voters and ensuring the democrats win forever. They should be lining up to impeach him to save their party.

Wonder what the Don does every morning when he wakes up now and his days in general?

I read summat about how he might actually have pardoned himself and his family/cronies, but he's keeping it secret. There is no constitutional requirement to tell anyone a pardon has been issued. He's just going to pull it out like a Get Out Of Jail Free card if he needs it.

Yup, I have seen the same thing too. Apparently it's quite legal too. Well for his family etc, his pardon (if he has in fact pardoned himself) would still be legally and constitutionally in question.

I've heard speculations that if the Turtle is sure he'll get the 17 votes needed to convict it'll be done. I guess that also means no Dems can go rogue, but I assume that's not very likely.

If I were the Dems I'd also take a good look at the doings of the Trump admin and start searching for traces for potential inquiries. The Covid response is a given at some point, and is surely going to dig up mounds of shit based on some of the stories. I also reckon there could be some interesting stuff in regards to conflicts of interest between business and employment in the WH admin. Not only all the utilization of Trump hotels and resorts for official meetings, but also all the allegations against Ivanka and Kushner getting sweet deals abroad.

There are talks of a hidden vote to protect the Republican Senators who could face threats if it became known they voted to impeach Trump.

Not sure how possible that is or not?

No. They sowed this field, let them reap their just rewards. If you are scared of your base harming you for doing what is right, and you therefore do what is wrong, the country should know you are a coward.

It surely cannot be legal for a President to pardon themselves. Otherwise, a Republican President could walk into Congress with an automatic weapon, murder several dozen elected Dems and then get away scot-free via a self-pardon.

I would think that the pardon would need to have been filed with the Justice Department and can't just be laying around waiting to be shown. Bunker Boy's power to issue a pardon ended last Wednesday at noon, so he could have written it on a big mac wrapper at 11:55 while on air force one, but I still think it would have needed to be officially submitted.

Thats what would make sense. And not some obscure rule that reuquires just to be signed and stamped with the presidential seal.

You're using logic to say why that shouldn't be the case. There is no logic to presidential pardons, it's an aberration, an arbitrary judicial power given to an executive.

Quite frankly, if the constitution doesn't explicitly deny it, I don't see why a self pardon shouldn't be possible.

Ivanka could do that you just described and there would be no argument about the legality of the pardon.

If he indeed pardoned himself, it will boil down to wherever the wind is blowing in the supreme court when they adress the case.

If that's the case then it's ironic that the USA fought a war to be free of the British Crown, only to create an elected monarch who is apparently above the law and can commit any crimes with impunity.

Jimmy Carter, there's a man who know what public service is all about. Still working to help other people even at his great age.
I figured him to be the most un-Trumplike example possible.

Possible follow-up line, "OK OK, but do you know how to get Carter? These Habitat for Humanity houses aren't going build themselves."

‘Give the man a break’ :houllier:

This fecking unity bullshit they're latching onto it so nonsensical. Unity doesn't mean in literally every fecking scenario. Imagine a murderer in the dock moaning that we just need to heal from his killing spree and we're not very unified. It's very 'so much for the tolerant left.jpg'
