Martial should not feature in a game that means something for the club ever again. He doesn't have the quality to play for us and every minute he's on the pitch, he's sealing time from other players that need to be developing. I'd prefer us find a different shape in order to keep him off the pitch. He doesn't work hard enough, can't hold the ball, has no vision and generally isn't good enough to wear Red Devil Red!

I prefer Greenwood, or our midfielders in a diamond (DVB, Fred, McTom) or even Telles to get his minutes. He needs to find a lesser side and a place he can play on the left and would fit nicely with a mid table team, scoring 6-12 goals per year on a nice mid contract for Palace, West Ham or Arse-nal.

He is holding us back and it's taken Ole too long to squeeze him out of the team. This is my one major criticism of our Gaffer.
Terrible post from start to finish. You would think that Shaw and Pogba making people eat their words would help them see that maybe sometimes patience is required, but clearly not. Ole has a far better understanding of football than you could ever dream, your one major criticism is worthless.

That's a contender for worst post of the year already. Martial doesn't have the quality to play for us.... He's possibly our most talented attacker ffs.

Oh dear.

You probably didn't want Pogba anywhere near the team a couple of months ago either, did you? I can normally spot your type.

We’re top of the league without Martial having made a meaningful contribution so far. We know we can’t play Cavani 90 minutes twice a week and we know that until we bring in Sancho that Greenwood is our only solution at RW, so let’s hang in there with Martial through season’s end, but Cavani has to be our first option at 9.

You think having a chance at the title would motivate him to make more of an effort on the pitch, but I guess it's just not his style.
I know you can't know how he performs in training, but he looks completely devoid of any fire or grit on the pitch. Wake up man!

False. What kind of foolery? Name me the players who are better than him in our squad that he is preventing their development. The ones you listed are so absurd I have ignored them.

I find the criticism of Martial a bit unfair, tbh. Just Imagine Martial putting out a performance like Cavani did against Liverpool; he would have been scolded for it.

Against Fulham, Martial actually had a pretty good game, and some of this seemingly bad involvements was down to Shaw - for some reason - not doing the overlaps he always does when playing with Rashford, and Martial ended up sending the ball into nowhere land. I expect them to have this sorted out for the next game, though, in case we´ll need Martial to play on the left with Rashford potentially out injured.

Let´s hope he´ll do like last season, and lift his game in the second half of it.

There's now been a spell of games where martial so obviously wasn't up for it, not just in bad form, just doesn't have the skill to take us to the highest level IMO. Unfortunately, he's caught my eye and now I glaringly see all his negatives, and once you look at him with a critical eye, let me tell you, it's painful.

I can take the insults, it's just my opinion and strangely his inability to help with possession (especially against high pressure teams) costs us possession so often that I began counting his turnovers.

As for being one of our most talented attackers, that's just laughable but I wont' insult you for your opinion. IMO, He's a distant 5th behind Rashford, Cavani, Bruno, Greenwood and likely even Mata. If we put Paul further up the pitch, he'd fare far far better than Martial in the role that Anthony can't fulfill.

And NO i never wanted Paul out of the team, only to have him shut his agent's mouth.

Where is the Martial that was devastating towards the end of last season? Maybe a period on the bench might do him some good, coming on against tired legs like against Everton in the League Cup.

If Martial can suddenly get back to that post lockdown level between now and the end of the season, it could be huge. Same goes for Greenwood really.

We need to stop playing him on the left and throw down the gauntlet. If he wants to be at this club, he needs to knuckle down and rip that spot back from Cavani. It's not a slight on Martial, it's the reality. He has the talent, he needs to now work for it.

That is the challenge for any top player at any top club. It feels like he's rested on his laurels a little, and has taken his foot off the pedal by a few percent. If he wants his place back, he needs to work for it.

There's no negative outcome as far as I'm concerned. If he has the stomach for it he will play his way back into the team because he has all the talent in the world. If he can't, then we'll have an idea of the mentality we're dealing with, and Ole will learn a lot about him.

Cavani came. Someone posted it, but anytime United buys another striker Martial falls off a cliff. Competition is needed at the club though, and if he gets rattled by it that says more about him than about Ole or United.

This is literally the first time he's been in competition with a new striker. Mourinho didn't see him as a striker so he was never in competition with Zlatan and Lukaku. The season we signed Zlatan his general form was poor, but that was his first full season as a winger. The following season when we signed Lukaku he was comfortably our best left winger but was stupidly dropped for Sanchez because we couldn't leave out the big new buy. Over those two seasons Martial started a grand total of six games as a striker and he got 3 goals and 4 assists.

Did you watch him for 6months at the end of last season when he was arguably the best striker in the league. He’s had a poor season but that doesn’t eclipse some of the other work he’s done in a Utd shirt. You’d think after Shaw and Pogba people would learn to wait.

Yes, I've watched about 80 percent our league games over the last 7 years and besides the early excitement of having a fast highly touted teenager, I've not really thought he had the qualities to become what we need him to become. Rashford on the other hand, does have everything to become a top top player. Martial can't hold the ball and can't pass. Zero vision, often looks disinterested. He has had a few rich veins of form and last season was so fun to see for him but I'd just rather see him move along and find another project that can make it to a far higher peak than I believe Anthony can reach. I do wish him well, i'm just so tired of seeing the ball ricochet off his shin to the opposition as we send it to him up top where he then flops his arms in disgust and walks to the center circle.

I only saw the highlights. Apart from the loose ball leading to LFC's second, did Cavani have a bad game?

No he played really well.

He fecked up for their 2nd but otherwise he was good, unlucky to hit the post late on.

His workrate puts Martial to shame.

Cavani was good against Liverpool but didn't get on the score sheet, I think 'ol mate is making the point that there's been fair few games where Martial would be putting in a good team performance and get slated hard just for not scoring/assist, which I'm in complete agreement with.

No, not particularly, but he was very little involved. Not his fault, as United sought to attack on the flanks, but my point was that the critics would have been very different if it was Martial.

There’s no way to answer this conclusively, but I wonder how Martial would have coped with the same ball Greenwood took perfectly from Rashford.

Yeah I certainly agree that Martial gets held to an unfair standard at times. Yes he's been a bit off-colour this season, but he still contributes a lot of valuable things that don't show up on the stat sheet. Just imagine how good we'll be if he rounds into form.

Martial can still turn it around, don't like that too many of you are writing him off. It's not long ago that he's won player of the season for us (it was literally last year lol).

Tony needs to perform now and in the future. Resting on past laurels isn’t good enough.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. We've played Martial at the front of our preferred attack 3 times this season.
His form has not been good but it hasn't been terrible either. He has had some cracking games (Villa, Everton, Sheffield, Leeds, Leipzig) but overall he's dropped off since last year. I still think a lot of it comes down to the fact that he's shifted about too much.

Give the 3Ms a go tonight Ole.

I've lost a bit of faith in him being our constant starting forward - but I do enjoy watching the guy play for us.

As long as Ole values him as one of the players he uses then I'm happy to enjoy him whilst he is here.

I dont believe the thing where he is not a hard worker, he works very hard when dropping back and helping to defend in deep areas in my opinion - yet he is a bit more settled when moving around everywhere pressing every front man he sees because it clearly attacks his own attacking ability in the way he plays football.

I want a Haaland here just as Ole clearly does - but that doesn't really mean that Martial plays football in the same way and wont be useful for a different style of tactic.

If Ole sees that - for example, Haaland, Martial, Rashford and Greenwood gives him a very mix and match style of forwards to choose from then I can see that too and will be happy with his decision. If he decides that Rashford is the better player whilst Martial maybe taking a future signings position in the squad then I could see that too (Sancho, Grealish etc).

Either way, I dont hate the guy, he is an enjoyable player to watch and support.

Like you said, he is a very enjoyable player to watch. I am just baffled by his sudden loss of composure in front of goal. Like you would expect him to kick off from last season, but something has happened. He has no injuries or anything that we know of, so it is just frustrating to see him like this. He also seems less faster dribbling with the football than he did before. I have said this previously, but he can't continue doing his best Firmino impression, mainly because our wide forwards are not on the level of Mane or Salah where you can get away with not scoring. If we are to remain in this title race, he has to chip in with goals and assists.

That said, he has performed well against Sheffield United in the past, so let's hope he picks up some goalscoring form.

Martial has been one exciting and frustrating me since he first broke through. What he is capable of doing with the ball at his feet is immense, in terms of dribling, passing, shooting. It was impossible not to see him as future world class at a young age. Even more frustrating then, to slowly acknowledge his weaknesses, which to me is summarized in a tendency for passivity, playing within himself, lacking the impetus to expand his tactical game and fields of rensponsibility by his own accord. At a point I thought it was about a certain stupidity or simple-mindedness, that he like Shaw just didn’t get what he could do to improve his range and efficiency.

Now I think it has more to do with confidence. What has been striking this season, is that after physically struggling at the start (like the rest of the squad), he reacted negatively to it, as if he took it on himself instead of like Bruno and Rashford getting hungry to strike back. His red card vs Spurs was typical for a player frustrated by himself. Then after that, he couldn’t do anything right for a while. Mind, he was still running were he was told, but without conviction, but the most striking was that his dribling passing and shooting went. Then, later, his dribbling returned, while his passing and shooting was still off. The dribling is the most instinctual part of his game, his back-tracking the least. When a player does his least instinctual stuff, and only his most instinctual stuff well, and fecks up the stuff in between, it is a sign to
me that confidence is lacking. The intent and effort is there, but the mind messes with the instincts on everything bar the mist instinctual stuff.

It’s specualtive guesswork off course, but my two cents says that Martials attitude is right, and under the present coaching (as opposed to the Mou coaching) he will grow on this bad patch, his passing will grow back, his finishing too, his moves in the box will continue to improve, and is capability for active initiative will then start to expand with his growing maturity, self-confidence and a new found hunger for responsibility. In a season or two he will be unbeatable. You heard it here first.

I wonder how long it will take for people to realize Martial will never be the CF for a league winning squad.
Are we supposed to wait and hope that he does?
One patch of good form doesn't take away 6 years of inconsistency.

And has now fallen to second choice behind a 33 year old Cavani.
I would have liked him to be, but frankly he'll never be good enough.

Yeah I noticed this too and it all started against Copenhagen in the Europa league last season when he started wearing those boots. He was in fantastic form going into that game but then missed a few chances and everything went to shit. The Martial I want to see back was the guy against Brighton last season when Bruno got a brace, although he didn't score the hunger he showed in that game is what has disappeared this season for me.

When you say "fallen behind a 33 year old Cavani", it implies that we have a declining Cavani. That's very debatable!

Cavani was a world class striker at his peak, and from what I've observed, he still very much is. I suppose what I'm saying is falling behind him in the pecking order is no big shame

Its annoying how we never back our players.

Last season, it was Luke Shaw, Rashford, Maguire, Lindelof who were criticised.

Who are the main stays of the team this season?

I even saw fans after the Liverpool league game saying Bruno needs to be dropped, its a joke. One bad game = the player is crap.
