He looks like he’s settling in well. Seems to have a good understanding with Puigmal and Mejbri already.

His performance is somewhat reminiscent of Ronaldo’s sub debut against Bolton, imo. Confident, good with the ball at feet, good football brain, good mentality, just not as physically developed as Ronaldo.

We’ll see how much more he grows, I reckon maybe a similar build to Eto’o, whom he has a slight resemblance to as well.

I look forward to his first team debut and to see his development with us.

*Edit: Who’s the 11 for Pool? Seems like a Milner/Henderson hybrid so they’re set there.

Is he as good as either? Rooney had played 60 odd first team games and scored over 15 goals for Everton prior to joining United? Ronaldo 25 games for Porto. Both were far more proven. I care not if he’s playing in a few weeks time, but throwing a small player into the fray in a struggling United team isn’t the ideal any manager should be looking at. I’d say very confidently that Ole and co have a better grasp on it than any Redcaf poster.
Yeah I don’t have the same faith. Ronaldo come from Sporting but I get your point. Also both players made their debut at 16 so I think they would have naturally accumulated more minutes. But we didn’t get him from Serie B. He came from Atlanta and has had Champions league minutes. So excuse me if i find it difficult to grasp why he can’t be on the bench for bottom of the league Sheffield United. You say a struggling United side? Which United are you talking about? Sheffield United was our first loss in ages and we was top.

That’s laughable! Ronaldo’s debut was the stuff of folklore against a tough proven PL outfit. He took to playing in front of 70,000+ people like he was born to it.
Playing against a poor U23 Liverpool side was a training game.

He’ll be good but people need to calm it

I keep thinking of Giggs who made his senior debut at 17 as a sub and his first start two months later. Ferguson protected him from the media during his development and used him sparingly. We could do the same with Diallo and gradually introduce him to the senior team fairly soon.

The problem will be the expectations on his shoulders because we're desperate for a right-winger. If he's good instantly there will be pressure to play him all the time. If he's not good instantly his confidence and development could suffer.

We need something to lift this team desperately because at this moment we're having a real slump in performance levels.

I'm hoping Ole puts him on the bench for Tuesday because the current crop have become so predictable.

Oh so he was going to make his debut 2 weeks after arriving in the country? Bizarre expectations you have carry on.

I am confident I have a better grasp on the English language than you, and at no point did I say ‘3 years’ - which you have added for dramatic effect. And if I wished to throw Rooney in the mix, I’d have thrown him in the mix, but I chose teenagers signed from abroad who need to ‘build themselves up physically and learn the language’, as you put it. I will throw Paul Pogba into the mix though, as he moved to Italy as a teenager having not played a full game for United and went straight into the first team at Juventus.

And if learning the language had any relevance whatsoever, Cavani would be in the U23s. Diallo won’t learn English in a couple of reserve games anyway, and it should have no bearing on him playing.
Apprenticeships are generally years. Sorry you weren’t aware of that.
Cavani isn’t an untested 18 year old, who needs to improve his physicality.
Pogba joined United as a youngster and played in the academy, what he did at Juve isn’t relevant to United. But he signed in July and debut in September, not 2 weeks later.
Diallo has had no preseason with United and expectations should be very light on him. I guess the coaching geniuses on here will moan on about sensible decisions being made on his behalf. I agree with how the club are conducting their dealing with him. If you’re not carry on posting about it, I’m sure it’ll make a big difference.

Yep just look at the attention he’s getting just from a reserve match! BBC and ESPN all commenting on him during/after the game, the pressure will be huge for him when he does get his full debut.

On the plus side, he seems to be very self confident and I think he’ll brush it off easily. The way he demanded the penalty and the finish shows he’s got the right mentality.
Panenka for his pen!

If Fergie was there he would still be grumbling about Academy kids being able to wear colourful boots (instead of his rule on black boots only), never mind some 18y.o doing a panenka!

Age, language, how long he's been here, none of those matter.

Is he ready for minutes in first team? We can only judge on what we've seen. I think he is ready. Add to that the fact that he is already better than any of our options playing at RW. (not overall better, just better at RW)

Having said that Ole and the coaches know what they are doing, see a lot more than us, know a lot more than us. They can be wrong but you have to trust them.

Every precaution taken is just that. It's a guess. You can't know until someone is ready or not ready until they get minutes under their belt in order to prove that they won't sink.
17, 18, 19, 20, it's just a number. There was 20 something's with weak mental strength and 16 year old's with strong mentality. But you find these things out truly when you're put in a position of some responsibility.

I liked the highlights. It's going to be difficult to dislodge Greenwood/Rashford at right wing. But he might provide more to the game than James would, so I wouldn't be surprised to see him on our bench.

Do you really think so? What has Rashford really done on the right?

Diallo should be on the bench from now on. I think he bring something different. Willingness to run at defenders, has a good left foot which means he could run along the touchline or cut in. He is in the mould of Robben and Salah. Yes, he may not have the consistency now but he will bring a different dimension to our attack. Robben isn't physical but he manage to survive the premium league. If he continues to develop, we got a fine player on our hands.

Such a promising player. He's got the right attributes; very skillful, tenacious, direct, cheeky, and most importantly, looks like he could break a nose or two if necessary.

This would be a great time to gradually introduce him to senior team football, since there are no fans in the stadium. It would feel a bit like training sessions and he won't be scared to express himself.

Although he's gonna give the ball away whilst attempting some of those fancy skills and that may frustrate some of the senior players. Ole would need to protect him whenever that happens, just like Sir Alex did with Ronaldo.

Under the right conditions, he could become a special player for us.

Not a lot form that position but he's capable of something brilliant at any given time. I don't really see him being dislodged from the starting XI form Diallo.

Sure, Rashford should be starting on the left, but Ole seems to shoehorn him right and Pogba left, so that he can play a "trusted" McT and Fred in bigger games.

I have a feeling that he likes to cut back in and shoot more than provide. That’s not a problem but it’s Greenwood’s move too and it’s been figured out pretty easily. I just hope he isn’t too similar to what we already have when we badly need more creativity from somewhere and not another striker playing on the wings

Cut Inside and shooting can be fine as long as you've got the skill to do it.

Robben made a career out of it, Greenwood seems to lack that skill he is better suited to being a finisher and imo he is a square peg in a round hole at RW.

As well as being able to go inside and out hes got a solid out ball to the fullback arriving late into the box too. He looks really promising already I have to say. Confident. Athletic. Skilful. I wouldn’t be at all surprised if he’s in pretty soon especially if we continue to struggle to break teams down. There’s not much he can learn at u23 level apart from getting settled in the city and getting relaxed in his new surroundings. Move Rashford back to the left and give Martial some bench time to get his head right. None of them look like hitting form the way we are currently setting up.

Honestly - what’s the alternative to him on the right?

Just chuck him in. I struggle to see him do worse than Rashford off the right.
The obvious concern is that EPL games are played in a much higher pace and very physical. Need to be careful to give him game time properly. I feel not comfortable if McT is not playing on right if Diallo plays on right.
Same as you, I am eager to see how he is in action and if he can offer better than Rashford on that side. But realistically, we put too much expectation on him for the immediate success. But who knows what it eventually turns out? I like to be optimistic :)

It's football, not combat in the Colosseum. It's a more physical league than others but it's not insurmountably more physical than others, otherwise slightly built young players in other leagues would just crumble into dust the moment they step foot onto a British field in a European competition.

They survived more often than not :)

Looks promising. Composed, skilfull, fearless. Almost Looks too good to be playing in an u23 game. Defintely worth a punt for some matchday squads. The plan is obviously to fastrack him to the first team - you dont spend 37m on an u23 prospect. He could get some useful low pressure minutes say for instance if we were a couple of goals up with 20 to play

Greenwood is out of form, 17 goals last season playing predominantly on the right side of the attack last season. So yeah let’s bin him as we’ve gotten a younger player!
Really don’t get why people need to drag down a player to support their pure illusion of an unproven player as being better at a role.
Diallo will very likely get game time this season, but jeez why the need to drag down other more proven players to promote that point of view? Lack of appreciation is in epidemic proportions on the Caf.

I don't want us to bin Greenwood but I don't see his future at RW, at least not in the current set-up. We need to maximise his time in the box because that's where he's best. He's a natural finisher, maybe the best at the club and so he needs to be in the centre not out on the wing.

Last year Greenwood was an unknown element and opposition defences afforded him more space and time. Now they know how dangerous he can be and he's getting shut out.

I see RW being taken by a more natural wide player, be that Diallo or another player.

I do expect that the opponents will have certain players to create a combat in colosseum scenario during his first several appearances. It’s common for newbies and just the way to test and target the perceivable weakness.
Even though Diallo’s body build is not ready yet (should be ok in one or two years), I think he should start getting some game times now. It just needs the team taking care of him in case of physical fight situation. If he can do Januzaj did in the breakthrough season or a half Raphinha can do, I will be very very happy. In writing this, just watched Raphinha produced an assist for Bamford to score against Leicester. Raphinha is 22? Diallo has all the time on his side to develop but we need to give him real first team game time. Hope him eventually reach much higher level.

We usually only give our subs minimal time anyway so i don't think chucking him on for 15 minutes in the next game is going to be too much for the lad.

I find it all a bit daft really, you've got young players starting for loads of teams. If he doesn't look ready when he starts then you manage him but not before.

SAF was good at is giving an exciting player a chance to give a spark to the players. I hoped OGS would have done that with Diallo, but for some reason the players are just getting complacent which have been our issue for years.

Ronaldo did. Martial did. I’m sure there’s a list of other players that have. At the end of the day all this bedding in and gaining minutes in a crap U’23 league for a £30m player is utter rubbish, especially when they are leaks of how impressive he has been in training.

Robben was absolutely rapid and appears to be a lot more athletically gifted than Diallo from what I've seen.

Diallo looks fast but not outstandingly so and does seem to have a deceptive strength that many players with a low centre of gravity have. He seems similar to Hazard and Sterling physically, hopefully he has the same acceleration at the men's level as those two have. Technically and mentally he looks great.

BTW one of the best things was how arrogant he played. So many times he kept showing the ball as if daring them to take the ball. It was pretty cool being a united fan. It did make me worry that they would rough him up.

My hope for him, is that by the summer we can start to use him like Nani when Ronaldo was her. We should sell Martial and sign Sancho, so that we have a proper three man wing rotation of players that can and are willing to play either flank.

Great start but give him time. There is a massive difference coming from U23 to PL. He's still needs to hit the gym to fill out that boy frame....

He’s not been playing with U23s at Atalanta though, that’s his first youth game in nearly a year.

Not played much men's football either. Also the prem is difficult for season pro's from other leagues to come to terms with. He doesn't need the pressure of this team at mo or the fans who will say he's shite if he doesn't score an hatrick in his first 3 games......
