One thing

Henderson must start ! I love it when he comes clears out all and sundry including his own players and gets the ball out of the box .
Is Ole brave enough to leave out DDG ? Since he keeps playing Martial probably not

It might not be entirely about bravery. Not that I'm complaining if he decides to leave Henderson in.

Great performance against a team perfectly set up for us to exploit. Playing a decent side set up like they were tonight suits us much more than playing a relegation threatened PL team who sit deep and don’t allow any space in behind or on the counter.

Bruno sensational, Rashford very good despite lacking composure in front of goal at times, Fred excellent energy and Greenwood looks sharp again. I also really like that CB pairing with Henderson in goal and believe that triumvirate deserves a run in the league. I fear Ole will revert to type at the weekend though.

Wasn't expecting that at all, but well done to the lads.

I hope that McT isn't hurt. Don't need to add him to the injury list.

Also, after the first 30 minutes I thought that we might need to sign Alexander Isak as our target man, out and out number 9 striker for the future, but then he kinda disappeared. I don't really remember him doing much of anything in the second-half. So, well done to the two CBs for that.

We don't have many nights like that, do we? Everything pretty much perfect. Very happy with Hendo, Telles, James of the non-starters. Very front foot, good to see Mata again, great to see Diallo on, even Tony looked imperious when he came on. Surely be to God we can build on that momentum against Newcastle.

What is Bruno's goal count up to? What a signing he's turned out to be. Legendary status in his first year. Hope we win a trophy soon, otherwise he might be tempted to move if anyone can afford him.

Manchester United's Scott McTominay could be a doubt for the weekend after coming off during the 4-0 victory over Real Sociedad in Turin.

Nonetheless, Scott soldiered on and was still influential before being withdrawn on the hour-mark for Nemanja Vidic, in a move that was seemingly planned.

There was no point risking the Scotland international further and we must wait to see if he will be available again for Sunday's Premier League home match against Newcastle United. He was recently substituted with a stomach problem in the 0-0 draw with Arsenal.

Paul Pogba will miss out against the Magpies as he continues his recovery from a thigh problem, while Edinson Cavani and Donny van de Beek did not make the flight to Italy.

Phil Jones has also been unavailable due to his long-term injury but Amad made his senior debut as a late substitute at the Allianz Stadium.

Newcastle welcome Jeff Hendrick back from suspension for the 19:00 GMT kick-off but Javier Manquillo, Fabian Schar and Callum Wilson are all out for Steve Bruce's men.

Was good. Watching the rest of the competition in this tournament though, it's gonna end up like the FA Cup with all English team finals.

A few weeks ago, turning it on in a competition that we’d be better out of would have been as annoying as the crappy league performances.

Fortunately we’re no longer better off out of the Europa League.

On top of that:
Does that just mean as a central attacking midfielder?

Ronaldo has turned himself into the complete number 9 since leaving us, but he played mostly as a winger for us in 4-4-2 formations (so not as a wide striker in 4-2-3-1), when he scored 20+ goals in seasons.

He came off. He soldiered on. Then suddenly he was hit by a car and it was the year 2007. Is there life on Maaaaaaaaars?

Didn't watch it. Great result but how come we had only 40% of the ball?

Some haters will say because we're poorly coached.

I would say Real Sociedad have no balls and keep the ball on their own half. Lot of sideway passing.
You would be wrong.
I would say RS played a suicidally high line against a team with the pace we have.

Scholes didn't take penalties or free kicks.

Henderson's distribution was fantastic tonight. I would love to see him given a good run in the side to see how our defense reacts.

Henderson needs a run of games which will give us a indication if he’s ready or not as De Gea needs replacing in the summer.

The fluffed chances in the end didn’t matter but we need to make them count. Can’t complain about the result but Rashford needs dropping as he’s misses will cost us!

Great result. Should hopefully give us some momentum and allow us to rest a couple of players in the second leg

This match confirmed my theory that we're good if we get afforded space. If teams set up shop and park the bus, we struggle.

PL teams have learned that all they need to do is play a compact defense and hit us on the counter or pump a cross in the box and we're as vulnerable as it gets. Let's see if Ole will address this. He can start by playing Henderson instead of De Gea

And in a nutshell, that's why United are the most frustrating team ever - I know football is a funny old game but we are often so good when we aren't expected to be, and so bad when we are.

Superb performance - so much movement and pace. Pleased for Dan James.
It's typical of a team in transition that is moving in a good direction.

Great performance.

Prior to this match the heaviest defeat Sociedad suffered this season was 2-0 against La Liga table toppers Atletico Madrid. Sevilla 3 goals in 3-2 win was the most goals they had conceded in a match this season.

In the group stages they conceded 4 goal total in their 6 games.

This is just crazy to me. He needs to be dropped for who exactly ? As frustrating as he can be, he is still producing and we just don't have any other alternatives right now.

I don't think merely sitting back would hurt us. We've beaten teams that sat back this season (not recently, but overall). The key in those games was our aggression and willingness to overload the box as well as the quality of chances that we'd create. The moments where we'd struggle to beat teams would be when we'd not be brave on the attack. The extra touches, the hesitation, the uncertainty in the passing...That's when we'd struggle. This is why we tended to struggle in matches against the bigger sides this season; the players would be afraid to give the ball away rather than believe in themselves.

Tonight, we didn't see any of that. When we were pressed, there was a certainty and commitment in the players' actions. When we went forward, there wasn't hesitation from the players in their passing and actions (for the most part). It was that certainty that allowed us to take control of the match for most of the half. United could easily have been on the back foot after Bailly's early mistake and an early Isak run, but nope, they kept believing in themselves and were able to play out of the press for the most part.

We have it in us to play this way. We just need to overcome that mental hurdle.

After a bit of a nervy start, at the back and up front, we mowed these jokers down with very direct passing going forward and solid finishing. But above all for me was the majesty of Bruno the Magnificent. He knows where to be, what to do and how to do it. Thank the gods we're in a pandemic because if this were a normal environment he'd be off to Barcelona before you could say mes que un club.

But beyond Bruno the standout player -- after an admittedly nervy start -- was the physioroom legend himself, Eric Bailly. What a beast he grew into as he shook off the rust. If I'm not mistaken it was a pretty insane pass from Bailly that sprung loose James, who still had work to do but the ball he got set him free and ultimately put a capstone to the evening with the fourth goal.
