Midfield is a tough one. Want Matic and Bruno as fresh as possible for Chelsea ideally.

Henderson; Williams, Tuanzebe, Bailly, Maguire, Telles; Fred, Mata, Amad; Greenwood, Martial

Assuming we don't have anyone back, I'd go 3-5-2/5-3-2. Happy for us just to see out the tie and get some game-time into squad players' legs/rest the likes of Rashford and Bruno.

    Hoping for something like this;

    -----------------------------Henderson----------------------------
    Williams----------Bailly-------------Axel-------------------Telles
    ---------------------------------Fred----------------------------------
    Mata----------------Shoretire---------DVB------------------Amad
    ----------------------------------Martial------------------------

I'd play James and Greenwood against Chelsea.

Unfortunately, Martial will likely play against Chelsea and do absolutely nothing again.

Exactly this if VdB is out, but with Matic in for Fred because we needs the latter’s tireless running and aggression at Stamford Bridge. I’d also start Bailly as we’ll need to get him up to full match sharpness before he plays Chelsea.

    Ideally though:

    Henderson
    Williams Bailly Maguire Telles
    Mejbri Matic
    Diallo VdB Martial
    Greenwood

    Prediction: 1-0 United

We've got 5 subs so I think we should start with a few changes, then if still comfortable at 60 replace them all.

    I'd go

Henderson, Telles, Maguire, Bailly, Williams, Matic, DVB*, Martial, Fernandes, Diallo, Greenwood.

Depends on the injuries to Mctominay, Cavani and DVB of course.

I would look to rest Rashford, Bruno, Maguire and AWB for sure. With the injuries in midfield, not sure who there is to bring in other than Fred and Matic. Anyone know the extent of van de Beek's injury?

Hopefully Pogba and McTominay will be fit to play some part in our next 5/6 games. McTominay seemed like just a knock, and he usually recovers well.

Unfortunately Ole is as simple minded as many in here and will probably play and injure a fatigued Bruno in this dead rubber, just before back-to-back season defining games against Chelsea and City. :houllier:

Henderson, Bailly and Telles will almost certainly return, possibly Williams for AWB, and try to give Tuanzebe a run in second half if we are comfortable.
Matic probably rested, so McTominay could return if fit. Fred possibly will stay.
VDB in for Bruno, again if fit, otherwise Mata.
Give Rashford a break, and play Martial on left, Greenwood in the middles, and Diallo on right.
    Probably not risk Cavani.

I fear fir us with Matic in the side even with a 4-0 lead. He was so slow last night

    Henderson
    Williams--Lindelof--Tuanzebe--Telles
    Matic--VdB (if fit)
    James--Mata--Martial
    Greenwood

Subs: De Gea; AWB, Maguire; Fred, Galbraith, Fernandes; Shoretire, Diallo, Rashford, Cavani (if fit)

If VdB isn't fit then I'd start Fred. I'd take Greenwood off between 45 - 60 mins to have him fresh for the Chelsea game. AWB, Maguire & Rashford MUST ALL BE RESTED for the complete 90 (unless we're in fear of losing the tie). There isn't a single reason for Bruno or Rashford to play a single minute otherwise.

For Bruno theoretically there is a reason. To further increase numbers with regards to envisaged Ballon d’Or selection process

Could we rest Maguire, Rashford and Bruno for this game or would it be to big of an ask for the players coming in?

    Maybe:

    Henderson
    Wan Bissaka Lindelof Tuanzebe Telles

    Matic Fred
    Mata

    Greenwood Martial James

Don’t really see a reason why Amad shouldn’t get plenty of minutes if we are at 0-0 around half time..

We are in a bit of trouble if Pogba, Scott, Donny and Eddie are out for a few more weeks. Matic is not able to play a game every 3-4 days, who takes his place? Axel?
I see some people incuding Hannibal as a starter but that is not likely to happen. He picked up an injury last game for u23s.

Bruno, Rashford and Shaw will be the guaranteed resters, and I'd like to see Maguire and AWB rested too if possible. It's got to be a start for Amad surely.

    Henderson
    Williams Lindelof Bailly Telles
    McTominay Fred
    Amad Mata Martial
    Greenwood

I want Amad to be given a start (and us to pas to him) and Shoretire to be given some time too. Surely, it's safe to give Bruno a complete rest (if it isn't then we are much worse than I sometimes think we are). I wouldn't risk Scotty of Edi even if they are fit. Go with Greenwood leading the line and if we are ahead at half time, give him a rest.

I'd like to see at least three more youngsters on the bench - there will never be a better opportunity to blood them

Don't underestimate Real Sociedad. We can rest a few that really need it but we can't take the game for granted, that's the type of poor attitude thats caused us all kinds of headaches in the past few months.

We can't fully rotate, because we can always get embarrassed. But a good amount of rotation for sure. Plus injuries will dictate we can't rotate everywhere anyway.

    Henderson
    Williams Tuanzebe Maguire Telles
    Fred Matic
    Diallo Mata Martial
    Greenwood

Can see this. Don't think we'll take out Maguire, and we can't rotate the midfield anyway. Martial and Greenwood I think will both play, I'd bet James starts vs Chelsea so can be rotated out here. Cavani, Shoretire, maybe McTominay and James to be used as subs. No need to use Rashford/Bruno/Shaw/Wan Bissaka at all here, barring a disaster.

I'd say Tuenzebe at RB with Bailly and Maguire the centre partnership.

Leaves us a back 3 whenever telles gets forward and should leave us the ability to defend a 4 goal lead whilst letting the others like Amad, Martial, Greenwood or Shoretire to attack.

Matic can’t play twice in 3 days. So he is not an option to start

Hope Amad can start, Shoretire off the bench again as well. I wouldn't be opposed to Cavani getting 20 minutes if he's fit.

    Henderson
    Williams Bailly Tuanzebe Telles
    Van de Beek Matic
    James Mata Amad
    Greenwood

Hoping Donny is fit so he can get a game. I'd rather we played Axel in midfield instead of Fred if no one is fit. I also won't mind if it's Martial over Greenwood. Tony is playing so poorly lately, so games like this could give him a chance to kick on. If all of Greenwood, Cavani and Rashford are fit, Martial probably shouldn't be playing on Sunday anyway.

Maguire always plays, so he'll probably start to be fair. This might be our only chance for the remainder of the season to leave him out though, so I think it's a good idea to take it.

With them being 4-0 down, they'll have to go for it, which suits us as we'll just pick them apart on the counter.

Why can't he? I know he's been burned out in the past, but that was when Jose was playing him 30 games in a row, not 2.

I'm sure he'll be fine. Particularly as he'll likely be up against 35 year old David Silva.

Diallo must be ready for a start by now. I get Ole wants to protect his young players but come on, he isn't made of glass.

    Henderson

    Williams Bailly Tuanzebe Teles

    Matic Mctominay

    Diallo Mata Greenwood

    Martial
Sub Mctom with Fred, Rashford with Martial and Maguire with Bailly/Tuanzebe at various stages of the game. All the while keeping a strong bench in case of emergencies.
Being 4-0 ahead is as good a time as any to rest your top players.

If Bruno rests, we are going to look like a bunch of lost little lambs out there. This fixture should be a gimme but we got the away lead playing most of our starters, and let's not gloss over the massive drop off in quality from first teamers to reserves.

I think Ole will play players who should be rested and we'll coast to a 2-0 win.

I see Sociedad recovered quickly winning 4-0 yesterday in the La Liga.

Uniteds record against Spanish opposition is poor in Old Trafford, only 1 win the last 9 games (D4 L4) although the 1 win was against Sociedad in October 2013.

I'm not that "arsed" about who we play other than:
Rest: Maguire, Bruno, Shaw, Rashford, AWB.
    Play: VDB, Amad, Henderson

Most of the team picks itself at that point.
