I genuinely feel like he changed his trainers from last season and should try to find his old pair.

In my view, his hold up play vs city was on the same level as last season, top class hold up play. I’m specifically mentioning this because he’s supposed to be good with his hold up play but this season his overall hold up play been dog shite.

As impressive as Martial was today, I’m holding him in the same regard I’m holding Pogba to.

If they can maintain their improved forms until the end of season, it’s worth taking a risk to keep them.

But the ideal situation would be to use performances like these to increase their resale value as much as possible and get rid of them for more consistent players.

The league has become so much more competitive now that any in dips in form like the one we experienced after being 1st to now 11 points behind City could also result in much worse situations.

We could still easily drop out of top 4 and to avoid any such situations in the next seasons, we need players who can not only perform consistently but also have the mental aptitude to play for a club like ours with less mood swings that our ‘French connection’ tends to showcase (alarmingly) frequently.

Personally, I’m a fan of their quality but I’ve now reached a point where I get frustrated more often than I’d like to because our club is still miles off from where it needs to be and specially after covid, it’s time to get rid of players who take high wages while being a liability more often then not.

Did anyone really think he was gonna score. That position, he really rarely scores them for there and the way he shot it showed he isn't natural there
he scored a few like that last season. Burnley, Newcastle, and Brugge here (8,9,13).

He's been shocking in front of goal since the season began.

Manchester Utd never lose, just run out of time
Improved or just had a better game? His hold up play has been good for 18 months now.
His hold up play is, like most of his game, inconsistent. He's always had some games where he's fantastic at it, dominating the defenders and winning a huge amount of those balls and bringing everyone else into the game around him. But he also has games where he barely wins anything and the defenders find it very easy to keep the ball from him.

His finishing seems to have deserted him this season. He used to be ice cold in front of goal

9 and 13 were similar even if he had more time to set himself up. 8 is a little different for me.
The situation from yesterday, he pulled the trigger too quickly andn the space wasn't even right. A finish on the ground, on the other side would have been better

Abit like Cavani’s finishing then? But for some reason he’s a must for our team?

I don’t know what’s happened. But he needs to get it back. We could do with that ice coldness back.

He played well against City yesterday but he's not good enough to be starting. I don't think he'll ever be good enough to be United's main striker.

But what do I know, I thought Fred was finished here, and Shaw was nowhere near good enough so I guess there's always time, but these tend to not work out more than they do.

Didn't see the game so can't say how good or bad he was. I'm glad he at least got a confidence boost with what I'm reading from here sounds like a good performance.

Just on this goal package, is this the weirdest goal package of any world footballer? There are barely any goals where you go "oh yeah that's his move he went this way that way and bang. He does it a lot and thats how he gets goals". They're all random 1 on 1's, those Fifa curlers or just messy trash he pokes in

All our attackers are bellow average this season. It is strange when you remember how they were great last season

Weirdly, his yips in front of goal began at the end of last season when his overall performance level was very good. This season has been a continuation of the poor finishing, with all the rest of his game also falling apart. He’s a peculiar player. Very unpredictable.

It was great to see Martial playing with confidence again. Good touch, strong hold up, decent movement across the line. All things that have been lacking in recent matches. Just a shame he didn't lash it past Ederson rather than going for the placed finish. A goal would have done him the world of good. We really need more from our forwards if we're going to make a really good go of it out to the end of May.

His hold up play was brilliant, so strong on the ball! Dare I say it almost reminded me of the classic english striker like Shearer with his back to goal, holding off the defender! Finishing still poor, as it has been since the sevilla game last season.

But i'm not here to bash him, just to simply say that was a good performance! For his sake and ours, I really hope he uses this performance as a spring board and pushes on! C'MON ANTO!!!!

As both strikers have been crap at it. However it’s like we have a clinical finisher keeping him out the side.
Cavani’s movement in and around the box is excellent. His workrate is far superior to Martial and he’s already scored some very important goals this season. Hence he’s been keeping Martial out of the team, on merit.

This thread isn’t about him though.

Does he bully a Ruben Dias like Martial goes yesterday? No.

F his movement and workout I prefer Crespo to Pippo Inzaghi. Like most people do.

His movement is good but his general play in the build up is rubbish

Does Martial bully a player like Ruben Dias in the 27 league games before this one? No.

Martial at his very best is obviously better than a 34 year old stop gap signing. He bloody should be! If not, what’s the fecking point of him?!

The problem this season has been how rarely he’s been at his very best.

I really liked seeing the praise he got from everyone when he came off, he's had a tough season between the worst form of his life followed by racist abuse and death threats and it was really good to see him smiling again. As people on here know, I love Martial and I don't think there are many finer sights than seeing him in full flow on the football pitch so I really hope this kicks him into form for the rest of the season and that this goes down as nothing more than a blip (a long one obviously).

Its not a should be debate. He just is. My gripe is when people actually think a 34 year old Cavani needs to be our lead striker. No! Just fix Martial.

Super happy he had a good game, but at the same time I'm still worried it was a one-off, especially 'cause of that missed chance :(

Does anyone else think his competition being out had positive impact on his performance? Would be worrying if true, I don't think having only one no. 9 is a good idea going forward.

He has to do this consistently. Play like he did yesterday and he is unreal.

If he scored that chance it would been a definitely 10 performance, but damn that miss was so bad that eventhough he played really well I can't give him more than a 7. You just have to score those, they don't come easier than that.
If city had gone on to score twice this thread would have a nasty undertone today

Yeah, it would have been horrible, luckily pretty much everyone performed and we got the goals elsewhere, which means we can all enjoy his performance. I think his scoring touch will return soon, he was decent against Sociedad as well so I'm hoping this is the start of his comeback now.

On another note, I've said a number of times this season that when he's in form there are very few players around who can do what he does and I felt yesterday he demonstrated that. If this really is a return to form and he can put his poor form behind him, I don't see any reason why he shouldn't remain as our main man up top.

Was yesterday just a flash or do you think he gets into form till the end of the season? It’s a massive shame he can’t put it together properly over a season, never mind two.

Exactly, it could have cost us luckily it didn't. But I remember him missing a sitter against PSG which ultimately cost us the game and next round qualification.
