How come Ole can only get a semi? | Can he finally go all the way?

It is very strange to rest your main players in a QF of a cup that we want to win.

Especially, we don't have any game for a couple of weeks after. It is like we are resting the players for international games.

We lost to Leicester but we did beat teams like Liverpool, Everton and West Ham in cups. I think the cup voodoo is being read into too much.

Major finals (CL, EL, FAC, LC) reached by English teams since Ole became United manager in December 2018:

Manchester City: 4
Chelsea: 3
Tottenham Hotspur: 2
Arsenal: 2
Liverpool: 1
Aston Villa: 1
Watford: 1

You can give Manchester City and Chelsea another 0.5 each already, and pencil Leicester in too.

I think today's team selection was criminal, personally think that's enough for me today.

Were treading water, if he gets a new contract it's criminal.

Cant win in the cups because he prioritises the wrong things and rotates too heavily.

Game was already over the second he picked VdB and Matic to start today. Awful team selection and totally needless. Chelsea last season all over again.

If you want to give Shaw and Bruno a rest you can do it without simultaneously letting the 3 biggest stinkers, those two and Martial (stinking up the place for differing reasons), all back into the team at once.

As a manager Ole is not a winner. And that's just as well because the whole reason he's here is to help soften the blow of the end of ambition to win titles.

Its only natural that as you progress in a cup competition the draws will get harder, when facing similar quality teams the coaching is what gets you the advantage. Its clear we are in disadvantage in that department.

Yes, but did we have a game 3 days before, and 3 days before that, and 3 days before? Resting your key players after heavy game is fine, as long as your fringe players step up, and a bit of luck that your opponent played like Everton's.

Starting fringe players who were not match-fit didn't help the logic of what you just said. Might as well start the key players and sub them off later.

Only logical conclusions: he didn't want to win that badly and he was resting them for national teams
sigh

Exactly. Shaw, Pogba and Bruno needed to play together at some point (preferably start, get us goals and then sub) if we wanted to win.

Also, there was absolutely no reason to not start Amad Diallo, when so many of our forwards are injured or out of form. Not starting him, that was a decision that was simply criminal.

And if anybody had played too many games and needed resting - how was that not Maguire? He was shit today

We are a team full of losers simple. Too many players that just do not know how to win .
When you say "we are" , just remember, that "we" stands for players + supporting staff. at what point do we need to make changes everywhere.

Does our squad have any winners? Pogba yes and who?

Starting lineup was a losing one for sure but I disagree with DvB being the main problem. Maguire, Fred, and Telles (who usually are ok players) were horrible today. Probably out of form all three of them. And stating Pogba as a winger, instead of giving a chance to Amad Diallo was a criminal decision. Pogba should have played his usual, McT should have started instead of Matic, Fred should have been rested and Amad should have started. Bruno and Luke had to be brought in at half time

How do you know Fred was not match fit? Martial is always an unknown anyway, you think he is fit, he is not. You think he is a risk, he gives you a 8. If you never play Telles or VDB, how can you know whether he is good or not. It was a decent rotation with only 2-3 key players being rested on purpose. You can't play the same 11 every game 60 games a season.

Beside, Pep rested KDB as well, Ole simply copied the same strategy.

So not starting an 18yo who has played very little first team football and has only been in the country and club for a couple of months is 'criminal'. BTW he gave the ball away a fair few times in the 5 minutes he was on so I'm quite glad he didnt start him.

In terms of shit performances the defense and the goalkeeper were the best of a bad bunch today, the midfield three were dreadful, matic and fred gave the ball away relentlessly and were getting passed around and run past all game, considering the pressure they were under the defence did pretty well to keep leicesters chances down. And van de beek was non existent.

Ole Cleary priortised the EL and the bonus of not just making sure we have as back door to the CL (which we shouldn't need) but also getting top seed status for the CL group stage if we go on to win it.

He obviously felt that bruno/shaw/mctom were not fresh to enough to start and complete the game and possibly thought it better to have them as bench options to come on later in the game against a tiring leicester, it almost worked aswell we were really pegging them back and putting them under the kosh before we conceded the 3rd goal. If we started them all do you really think we would of blown leicester away? And got ourselves a couple of goal lead and been able to take them all off and relax? I wouldn't of thought so.

Since when is starting 18 year olds ind a cup (!!!) game not a good idea? Especially when you don't have much of the choice because Rashford is injured, Cavani is out of form, Martial is depressed or whatever feck is wrong with him, and basically you are left with Greenwood who had to play on the wing while he would
have been a better striker? Playing Pogba out of position was a better choice somehow? I think scoreline has proved that theory wrong pretty solidly.

It is not the squad alone that is the problem. These players have shown that they can compete. What is lacking is a team structure. If players are not coached to to pass and move then they do not know how to play. Where was Pogba playing? If he was on the left side, then he certainly was getting into DVB's space. Matic a midfield players was playing as the 3rd CB. Fred was all over the place. There was no structure to the 10 outfield players. The team needs to pass and move. `We do not do that. All we need is to either get Rashford or James to run with the ball. When we cannot do that we are stuck.

Wasn't just the awful team selection, it was the formation as well.

How many times does Ole have to experiment with the narrow diamond, with such unsuited personnel as well, before he'll realise it never works and always results in hideous football and defeat?

I am not saying it as an excuse - but when you look at the opponents we have had in the cup tournaments - of course that is part of the answer. When you meet the best teams all he time, sooner or later you will lose.

Look at the draws we have had below - that shouldn't even be possible. The only time we generally were Lucky With the Draw - Europa League last season. Apart from that it's been hellish all around.

C.L 20/21 : Leipzig and PSG
E.L 20/21 : Milan, Sociedad, Granada and Roma
FA 20/21: Liverpool, West Ham, Leicester
LC 20/21: Brighton, Everton, Man City
FA 19/20: Wolves, Norwich, Chelsea
LC 19/20: Chelsea, Man City
FA 18/19: Arsenal, Chelsea, Wolves
C.L 18/19: PSG, Barcelona

True, we’ve had terrible luck. Imagine we had Chelsea’s CL run this year.. Sevilla, Krasnodar, Stade Rennais, Atletico and Porto.

They’re in a CL semi final and they’ve played europa league level opposition bar Atletico who I actually think are a poor side as well.

Take a look at City’s and Liverpool’s CL groups this year too.. Not saying we shouldn’t have won some of those Semi Finals but christ we’ve had terrible luck of the draw compared to the teams around us, especially in the FA Cup.

That’s why I haven’t paid too much attention to this semis BS.
City - better team
Sevilla - we battered them. Missed 5 sitters and conceded twice from nowhere
Chelsea - had to field depleted squad since we needed to prioritise the league
So, it’s just a combination of circumstances and bad luck. This right here now, though, is very different.

I watch Roma quite a lot, since I kind of like them and they are head and shoulders below all of those opponents. Terrible results against any decent team, lots of injuries, squad divisions. Given our position in the league and the fact that we have only this cup to play for - no excuses there. If we lose this tie there should be some serious questions asked, but I don’t expect it.

Tbh his record is consistently good, making semi finals almost all the time. Hopefully he will make it count this time, winning the cup. It's good to make SF consistently but in the end its of no use if we don't make progress from that point.

I think this is the one that Ole has to get over the line in. If we lose in the final it will be painful (particularly if it’s to Arsenal) but at least he will have taken us a step further. Really thought I think we need to go and win it to silence many of the critics. A second place finish with a Europa league win is a good season by anyone’s metric.
