Jesus Christ! Have people even listened to his comments?

1. This was when he was in Norway, so to people who think he rejected a superstar while at Utd because of this, please stop making a fool of yourselves
2. We have no idea who the player is. whether this is a 16 year old kid or a 25 year old guy? I'd side with him if this was a 16 year old rookie as I want players to behave professionally especially when they're this young.
3. And if he wanted to reject such a player, who the feck are we to judge him without knowing anything? I'm quite certain he would have been one of the 10 people on the shortlist, and not very high on that list if he got rejected because of his hairstyle

Doesn't really matter if he was at Molde or United. Doesn't matter if he's 16 or 25.

There are many reasons to pass on someone these days it including football ability, but this ain't one of them

He was probably right in fairness. Sporting a mohawk and playing in a shit league is not really a good combination.

If he was rejected for a stupid hairstyle, I'm quite certain he was on the lower side of a pretty long shortlist.

I don't think there's any manager who'd reject a player on top or near about the top of shortlist because of hairstyle. Hell, Ole loves Pogba and some of his hairstyles are terrible.

Ole can't do wrong for you, does he? He said this and it was not a joke. So, for me, that was something which is awful thing to say from your main guy for signing players.

Reminds me of Keano and signing Robbie Savage:

In his autobiography, The Second Half, Keane said: “I rang Mark Hughes. Robbie [Savage] wasn’t in the Blackburn team and I asked Mark if we could try to arrange a deal.

“Sparky said, ‘Yeah, yeah he’s lost his way here but he could still do a job for you’.”

“Robbie’s legs were going a bit but I thought he might come up to us [at Sunderland] with his long hair, and give us a lift – the way [Dwight Yorke] Yorkie had, a big personality in the dressing room.”

“Sparky gave me permission to give him a call. So I got Robbie’s mobile number and rang him.”

“It went to his voicemail, ‘Hi it’s Robbie – whazzup!’ like the Budweiser ad. I never called him back. I thought: ‘I can’t be f***ing signing that’.”

You all found me out. This was how my potential career at United was halted.

Never claimed Ole's perfect (no idea why people here think a person siding with Ole considers Ole to be perfect), but it's stupid to think that he rejected a player on top of his shortlist just because of his hairstyle. We literally have zero idea about the player. We just know this was when he was at Molde.

It's more than likely that this player wasn't high on his shortlist. I's also very likely that the player was known for his eccentricity and he pulled that off.

The position the player in question played is important, though. Mohawks are for creative flair players and deranged lunatics exclusively*. I wouldn't touch a centre back with a mohawk with a ten foot pole, for example. Too risky. They'd be like a combination of Bailly and Jones, just worse. I'd have think long and hard about goalkeepers too. Sometimes you strike gold with a mental keeper, but they're generally very hit and miss.

*Beckham is the exception that proves the rule. In his case, he simply ran out of new hairstyles to try and was left with no other choice than to hawk up, and it was a terrible idea all around.
Just spit my coffee over my keyboard
Quality post. I hope you get a scouting job

I remember Klopp saying similar about Sadio Mane.

Both questionable comments.

I don't mind this stuff in fact I'd encourage it. If anything I'm annoyed we haven't got that spirit from Ole now rather than this version which thinks he's a mate calling everyone nicknames.

I'd bring Keane back to solve out some of our idiots, just maybe on a short term coach role rather than manager.

How does a certain hair style have any bearing on footballing ability? What a fecking stupid comment. :houllier:
It might not tell you anything about his footballing ability but it probably does tell you something about his personality which is also important when you're considering signing someone.

This is possibly the reason why. In Scandinavian countries we are not too flashy, and having a hairstyle that screams superstar without having accomplished anything goes a bit against what we have here called Janteloven (Law of Jante) where the mantra is "dont believe that you're all that" - Players of course have to fit into the dressing rooms as well, so there is a cultural aspect to it.

He basically tells you that the person might have had an inflated ego compared to his accomplishments and the culture he was in, Im sure Ole would have picked up on him if the scouted player really was all that

You know the best part about this interview is how he talks about Haaland and how he describes him, pretty much, exactly the same way he describes Bruno Fernandes a minute before in the same interview.

Articles have been written on transfers for far less than that. Take a hint.

I kinda agree with his decision. But he should not tell it in the public until he became a renowned successful manager (had actually won some big things).

Ole saw Fergie make Bebe shave that fro off and thought "I need my own hair story."

This coming from a man who's hair has been the exact same length for 25 years.

He still owes me and many other posters for the last 28 months or so. Knowing he is only being paid a PE teachers wages, I haven't bothered to send him the invoices...

Regarding the Mohican, I believe carpy and ROFLUTION both are onto something. But make of it what you will.

I can get that. I would probably be thinking the same.

This brings up a lot of questions:
  • How do Murtough and Matt Judge feel about flashy hairstyles? In cases of disagreement, how does a consensus decision work? Do any of them have an outright veto power on any particular hairstyles?
  • In our sophisticated weighted scoring system for potential transfers, what percentage is allocated to hairstyles?
  • How does scoring a hairstyle work? Is it binary, or are there degrees of fitness to the united way? Can one approved hairstyle be considered better than another approved one and be part of ranking potential transfers?
  • Are the scores generic for all players, or do different players, based on age, level, ethnic background, and other criteria, have different scoring scales?
I am not one to sniff at any method that leads to success no matter how wacky it might sound, but it only makes sense to track how successful it’s been and tweak it as we go. Ole might be onto something here.I might be a bit bored.

Stuff like this matters to managers, clearly. Remember Cantona getting away with wearing his denim jacket while all the other players had club blazers? Fergie was challenged about it and was pretty honest in saying that if you’re winning games for us every week, wear what you like. Otherwise, discipline was important.

Ole could’ve at least watched the game though

If y'all actually watch the video you can easily tell that he says it as a joke. There's of course an element of truth to it, especially since they were scouting for a player to play in the Norwegian league, meaning it's a talent that knows he isn't ready for the big leagues yet, but he laughs when he says "so that was a short scouting trip". Doesn't say he turned around in the door, but maybe didn't pay as much attention.

Either way this is a jokey Q&A, not meant to be all serious. Can't blame him for trying to answer with some entertaining answers to fans.
