Roberto Rojas - the Chilean keeper who hid razors in his glove and cut himself and made it look like he had been hit by fireworks :)

Think it was a World cup qualifier or something

Brilliant....

Who was that young goalkeeper that played against United about 3 season's back give or take a season or two in a European competition because of an injury crisis? He was about 17 and was at fault for a goal we scored.

Wondering if he plays regularly now. There were people on here who I think that was the only time they'd ever seen him play (nobody could have seen him play much or at all prior) say we should sign him and I wasn't sure why.

Edit: Mile Svilar - Benfica. Still with them apparently, playing for the B team. Perhaps 3rd choice overall behind Odysseas Vlachodimos and Helton Leite.

Still think of him as being the next big thing/a natural successor for many big clubs.

I also used to think Paraguay had a lethal weapon in their locker with Chilavert in goal when I was a kid.

Roy Carrol still plays semi-pro football and got lobbed by a 40 yard header the other weekend.
Not as bad as it sounds, though.

Chris Woods.

Not many keepers that I'm all that bothered about, but I loved him when I was younger and he played for Rangers and broke the British record for going the longest without conceding a goal (later overtaken by Van Der Sar).

John Lukic for Leeds for no reason other than I remember his name.

Ian Walker particularly for that FA Cup semi final against Everton.

Neil Sullivan for being the keeper that Beckham chipped from the halfway line.

Harald Schumacher for an infinitely less savoury and more infamous reason.

Gianluigi Buffon.

Not very 'random' now, I grant you. But I always remember reading about him when I was younger, and he was breaking into the Parma team aged 17, and I liked the sound of him and cut out his picture and stuck it onto my wall with other players I liked at the time. Very unusual for me to pick a keeper, and a 17 year old from Serie A. So at the time it was a pretty random choice.

And I followed his career from them on - and what a career it turned out to be!

Brad Guzan. American GK wo played for AVFC, he was the GK who conceded RVP's legendary volley, i always remember him him for some reason.

Fernando Muslers, Uruguayan GK, played with Lazio and moved to Galatasaray and still plays there.

Carlos Roa, Argentina GK in WC'98, i remember he saved couple of England's pk shots (David Batty was one of those who missed right?)

I remember him having a great game for Forest against Liverpool in the late 70s. Shilton was cup tied and he stepped up.

We all love United
Neville Southall. Fat and saved everything against us in the 94/95 FA Cup final. Was a very good goalkeeper though from my impression

Gary Bailey.
He turned up at my workplace to collect an air ticket having somehow had a late call up to the England squad.

Dragan Pantelic - very good keeper and topscorer for Yugoslavia for a while around 1980, by pens and goal kicks.

Henry ‘Tippen’ Johansen - blocked out Hitler’s propagandic prodigies in Berlin in the 1936 Olympics for Norway’s greatest ever footballing achievement.

Thomas N’Kono - Kameroun keeper and the best keeper in the 1982 World cup, shutting out Rossi with his pending Champions and Boniek for the Polish bronze medallists, back when there where still some (racist) people claiming Africans couldn’t play football.

The older United fans will have a soft spot for Les Sealey (RIP). great bloke and good keeper, the highlight being the 1991 Cup Winner's Cup final against Cruyff's Barcelona.

His next United final (1994 League Cup final) wasn't as good a result!

Rinat Dasayev - Excellent russian 80s goalkeeper. An agile cat.

Harald Schumacher - For knocking Battiston unconscious and none of the refs noticing. The bloke must've been a decent goalkeeper, but in my memory he's more like a contract killer.

Gary Bailey - Remember from the 70s watching United on telly. Somehow the phrase "Bailey shoots, Bailey saves" got stuck with me. Obviously the Bailey who saved was Gary Bailey, but I'm not sure who the other Bailey was.

Theo Snelders

Dutch keeper who spent almost a decade with Aberdeen in the 80's/90's.

Mainly because he had a great name at a time when foreigners were nowhere near as frequent in the British game - they also had Hans Gillhaus (pronounced Hill house) around that time as well.

Ally Maxwell.

I'm not Scottish, but I keep picking Scottish based keepers. As well as Rangers, my dad and older brother had a soft spot for Motherwell and, as a youngster, I was at the 1991 Scottish Cup Final between Motherwell and Dundee United.

During that game, Maxwell ended up with broken ribs, a ruptured spleen and double vision after a collision with an opponent. However he played on, even 30 minutes Extra Time, to help Motherwell win the cup 4-3. And made a great save late on.

He later went on to have spells at both Rangers and Dundee United, but I'll always remember him for those Cup Final heroics with Motherwell.

Marco Ballotta is one I always remember:

Played at the top level as a goalkeeper until retiring at Lazio aged 44 - only to re-emerge as a centre forward. He’s still at it now aged 57 I think.
