I can understand how people can argue that Cristiano (peak)/Giggs (longevity)/Shearer (a bit of both) is the best premier league player ever, but surely Henry has done enough so that the mention of him being one wouldn't be "ridiculous"? Which players do you consider being better than him?
Nah Henry was deffo the best PL player. Ronaldo's peak season was probably the best single season ever but Henry was World Class in the Prem for longer.

From historical players I think Keane and Ruud are the most overrated. The fact we got way better without them says a lot.
They both have great stats, but for the overall team they are not amazing.
For me Carrick is way better than Keane and the results show that as well.
Tevez and Rooney for all the flaws better than Ruud.

I also think Cantona is overhyped, but he did lift the club a bit like Bruno. Thus you can understand he gets overrated.
This is the worst post I've seen in the 10 years I've been on here.

I'm actually almost impressed somebody could be so demonstrably wrong.

Carrick/Xavi alonso type...

there aren’t many around.

Still some way off but Ruben Neves or Rice are probably the most alike in the PL today
Yeah agree really like that type of midfielder. Having two of them like Spain did might be a bit overkill and too boring though.
Although they won the world cup with that boring style.

He was a great midfielder at his peak, but the hype he got was way overblown. Kimmich is already the superior player in my opinion and will only get further ahead.
And before you come at me with the "Fußballgott"-moniker Schweini got from Bayern fans: Carsten fecking Jancker was labeled a Fußballgott as well by them.

XI: Casilias, Ramos, Terry, Puyol, Kompany, Busquets, Keane, Lampard, Kaka, Henry, Eto'o.

Bench: Van Der Sar, Van Dijk, Carrick, Nedved, Ronaldinho, Bergkamp, Van Nistelrooy.

I'm gobsmacked.

You rate these players a lot and many do I understand. That is why I don't rate them as highly as others and why I mentioned them.

I find it strange that people get upset over people not rating players the same way they do.

For me our best years under SAF was 2007-2011. We could have won 3-5 CL titles potentially with slightly different tactics and some more luck and less injuries/suspensions at key times. Thus I rate the players from that time higher than the treble winners overall although they are all bloody great.

Pretty brilliant team that is, but no fullbacks or wingers.

You're not wrong saying Tevez/Rooney were better than Ruud. Van Mistelroum was no slouch but they were more complete players.

Edit - Tevez in general, not just here (although maybe that's what you meant?).

Its not about rating players or not. It's about being clueless to the point people start doubting whether or not you've actually every watched a football match.

Roy Keane was the first name on our teamsheet for 12 years, those 12 years bring the most successful in the clubs history. He was the best midfielder in the premiership for the majority of them. There isn't a single player who's played with him who wouldn't have him down as the most important player they've ever shared a pitch with.

Van Nistelrooy, again you're bonkers, but there's atleast a sort of argument to be made.

Bruno Fernandes
Marcus Rashford
Mohamed Salah
Sadio Mane
Trent Alexander Arnold
Raheem Sterling
Harry Kane
Pierre Emerick Aubameyang
Jadon Sancho
Kylian Mbappe
Erling Haaland
Cristiano Ronaldo (current version)

And so on ie insert all pace and power ballers and all the G/A specialists.

Good players but not world class players

Just casually picking Carrick over Kevin De Bruyne, Toni Kroos etc.
We don't need a creative outlet like De Bruyne because we have Bruno and Pogba. We don't desperately need a possession recycler like Kroos either, because we don't play that sort of game. Both would obviously improve us, but not by as much as a rock solid defensive midfielder that plays a simple, accurate and effective passing game. Right now the defensive part of our midfield consists of a whole lot of effort, but not a whole lot of brains or skill.

You rate him as one of the best midfielders ever and I do not.I am sure people say great things about everyone mentioned here, but people still have different opinions.
I think we had a stronger midfield after he left. Not that it was his fault or that he did badly.

I have a feeling you are referring specifically to the Barcelona games in the CL?

If so then they ran three-lung-Park ragged, along with the rest of our team.

I don't remember Carrick being overrun often in the PL. His positioning and ability to read the game were excellent meaning that he didn't need to be tackling constantly. He was levels above what we see today in the PL.
The Barca games obviously glaring example, but everyone struggled in that game, do I think we would have been in better state if we had some one like fletcher or Hargreaves fully fit in the DM poisition. Probably, how much difference would it have made? I dunno, I think in general Barca were miles ahead of us at that time tactically and I don’t think who ever we played we would if won.

No really just when ever he was faced with teams that played at a high tempo he struggled.

Cantona obviously scored some great goals but... nah I can't do it.
Haha wise man!

A serious one: Nani. The single most infuriating United player of the past 20 years, for me. Either useless or brilliant with the ratio being about 4:1 in favour of useless.

Yeah, I think so as well. But while I can see other realistic candidates , I can’t see how Henry’s suggestion can be “ridiculous”.

He's already said that Cantona was before his time, yet is qualified to talk about him.

And, apparently Keane wasn't as good as Fletcher or Carrick, despite Keane's peak coming within 2 years of Cantona leaving.

Pure bollocks.

Bruno, Rashford, Trent, Sterling, Aubameyang, weren't ever world class in their careers anyway, so yeah, they're sometimes overrated because of some great moments here and there. Out of the five you can make an argument for Bruno, but he's yet to reach a certain level of maturity in his game.

In my opinion these are still world class:
- Kane
- Ronnie
- Salah
- Mane

Jury still out for Mbappe(dubious finishing at times) and Haaland (pretty useless if his team doesn't supply him but still has the advantage of being able to play all kinds of roles as a ST). Let's see when they move to bigger clubs.

Other players I don't really rate:
- Azpilicueta
- Vieira - big presence, but not the godlike player everyone seems to think he was
- Keane - same as above
- Nevs - consistently good but that's it
- Stevie G - good player but mostly looked good in a bad team for years, did feck all with Englad though
- Joe Cole - yak
- N. Butt - average
- Fletcher - average
- Ivanovic - average
- Carrick - metronome player but the game was becoming too fast for him
- Trezeguet
- Vieri

Oliver Kahn - made spectacular saves and was very showy but I always thought he looked quite easy to score past for a supposedly top keeper.

Puyol - sort of similar, good player for a defender but so often beaten by pace, or skill, or in the air. Not as good as made out, never a world XI player for me

Bruno Fernandes - as others have said, can't argue with his impact but he does a lot of rubbish things in most games

Jordan Henderson - player or the year, you are having a laugh (see also Scott Parker)

Alisson Becker - better than Lorus Karius, yes. Special? No.

John Terry was just an slightly above average defender playing with better players, Steven Gerrard was only rated highly because he's English and got many MOTM for England while doing feck all
1000 times yes! True world class defenders dont need to make regular last ditch tackles because they can read the game and stop it getting to that point and dont get dragged out of position so easily!

This is the modern day Rashford.
Hmmm. There are currently similarities but Rashford has been playing through injuries for a long time. Seems like the kind of guy who needs to be in peak physical condition to perform - a bit like Rooney. Plus his peaks have been up there with Nani's at a much younger age and in a significantly worse team.

Gets a pass from me.

Zlatan was never as good as is made out for me.

Henrik Larsson either. Spent his prime years in Scotland, and was more of a cult hero than really great player for me.

Raheem Sterling. Became overrated for becoming a tap-in merchant and a symbol of equality (which I rate him for more than anything, he’s the most significant black person in English football in recent times for this reason for me.)

Thomas Muller. Only recently have I started to really rate him, but for long spells - nah, didn’t see it.

David Seaman. Was never a real great to me. Thought Nigel Martyn was better.

Hazard: This has to be one of the most overrated players ever, yeah he can dribble and he has a cool name too, but when people are talking about him beeing able to fill Ronaldos gap at Real it just gets to stupid. He's a very good player but it stops there.

Henry: When people are in high numbers on him vs Cantona in a United forum, something or some people got it seriously wrong. An absolute beast player.

Benzema: This dude was underrated for years, now he has finally gotten overrated. =P

Harry Kane. When I watch him I feel he’s not involved in many games. I would be interested to see how many goals he gets that are match winners. I feel like Spurs score a lot of goals against minnow teams and that bumps up Kane’s stats a lot. Like the time he got 4/5 goals against Hull to be top goal scorer in the league. Hull had already been relegated.

Drogba. He was brilliant at his best but he wasn't at his best very often.
Interesting one. When you look at his yearly goal stats he had a lot of bad seasons for Chelsea. I think the seasons he played well he was world class but the other seasons his form fell off a cliff.

So Luis Figo used to get hyped as an world class legend on an worldwide level but I used to question whether he was really much better or even better at all than our players at the time (Beckham, Scholes and Giggs)

This thread is not for ‘players you don’t think were good’, it is for ‘players you don’t think were as good as others did’. Zlatan’s mystique is a combination of being a good player and an incredible PR team.
