Just shows how grass is always greener on the other side, a shit show today basically his mistake in almost every goal and yet some people will still claim he should be here.

Only seen highlights of our goals and boy did he not have a good game and throw in a very harsh penalty against. He has also just come back from an extended lay off. I mean am glad he sucked against us but, sounds like people would have taken as much enjoyment that performance if it was against even City or Liverpool.

Smalling was terrible tonight, but one match shoukd never be much to judge a player on. He’s been injured for a while and just came back.
 maybe 4,1...

Agreed, but that’s not what I’ve judged him on. He was ‘ok’ for us, but never good enough if we wanted to be challenging again. It was mind boggling to me when people on here were claiming we’d have been better keeping him over signing Maguire

Think he would of worked well with Maguire but he wasn't getting any younger and wanted first team football, fair play to him, could have easily sat on our bench with certain other centre backs(if they are even fit enough for the bench)

No ill will to Smalling who was a decent servant, shame seeing so many shit on him.

I was unsure, but Maguire has won me over. Not sure about Lindelof though. Well, I am sure, but not in his favour.

I’m not shitting on him at all, he was ok, but he always had a mistake in him. The overrating of him after he’d left was ridiculous though

best post in this thread tonight.

No idea why we posters need to shit on him. We got smashed 6-1 at HOME earlier this season.

was a good player for us, and wanted to play first team football - far better than the likes of Jones, Bailey and Rojo.

edit - better than the above in both performances and attitude. He didn’t want to sit around picking up a fat cheque for not playing.

Nar, Maguire needs a partner who he can play football with, he’d have played Smalling into all kinds of shit else had to completely change his game to exclude passing to his partner if he was under any pressure.
Smalling was a good servant, but we needed to move away from that.

Finally we can put all that "Smalling's our best CB" dogshit to bed. Italy was always his level. How he managed to steal 10 years at United was a joke. Probably got about 10 decent games out of him.

Didn't look fit to me, which is understandable after his lay off. Used to be very good winning the aerial ball, but struggled a bit tonight. Will be interesting to see if he plays in the second leg where the lad who was unavailable tonight is back.

That's easily the worst I've ever seen him play.

Obviously delighted we won by such a huge margin but it's a shame to see him have such a mare.

A reminder of where we've come from.

I had a feeling it wouldn't end well when the BT commentator called him Smalldini.

He was very good for a full season in 2015/2016.

I can't even begin to tell you how much that season has been misremembered in his favour.

We were a defensive team, who held onto the ball most of the time, he was protected so much by LVG's tactics. It isn't a massive stretch to say that Blind was our best centre half that year.

He's been injured for most of the season and this is his second game back. He's been Roma's best defender since joining them, people here are being way too harsh just to be able to say 'I told you so'. Same sort of people that wrote Shaw off repeatedly under Mourinho.

Plus De Gea was De Gea(beast mode). That stupid red card he got in the FA Cup final was unforgivable and I'm yet to talk about how his stupid own goal vs Bournemouth cost De Gea a Golden Glove

Alot of Schadenfreude in this thread.

Bit disappointed to be honest to see so many posters taking pleasure in Smalling's poor performance tonight.

While I'm pleased to see United win 6-2, you could see the disappointment in his post match interview and couldn't help but feel a bit of sympathy for him. He was a good model professional at the club and always gave 100% and deserves alot more respect than some posters are giving him.

I'm sure you'd be just as generous if the result was 6-2 to Roma and Maguire had played like that...

Let this be a lesson to anyone who pines for the likes of Smalling, Evans, Welbeck, Chicharito and even Ravel back.

He was terrible tonight but we were also very good and he hasn't played much this season because of injury. He was a decent player for us, best defender at the club for a while (didn't have much competition granted). And he moved on and has did well for Roma.

Doubt there's anyone pining for Welbeck or Ravel, Chicharito's past it now as well. I'd swap Evans for Jones.

I’d swap Chris Evans for Jones. Evans could clearly do a job for us as a squad player. But like smalling, I’m glad he’s playing first team football and doing well.

Stalling has been playing well for Roma, he’s been unlucky with injuries recently. He had a bad game today but that doesn’t take away that he has been playing well for Roma and he well regarded there.

You'd be surprised. There's always someone in the Ravel thread asking if he could do a job here

That's not true though. He was highly rated while he was here, and during the LvG era arguably our second best player (behind beast mode DdG). He wasn't known to make many mistakes, it was his passing some had an issue with. As a pure defender he was fine. He was the CB version of AWB, who many of our fans keep saying isn't good enough.

Honestly watch Cavani’s goal and it’s like Smalling actively peels off the striker he’s meant to be marking

Granted I only watched the highlights but looked like Chris Smalling had an absolute mare. I don’t even rate our other CBs that highly but it was laughable how people were claiming he’d still be our best defender.

He was largely good for them last season, especially in the first half of that season. However, since then, he's been either injured or poor. And today he was calamitous. I credit Smalling for seeking a new challenge and opportunity in Roma rather than sit on the United bench for the rest of his career, however, he was no great loss for us at his age and fitness record.

Totally different scenario to Luke Shaw, who was a young player physically and mentally recovering from a potentially career-ending injury.
