I honestly wouldn’t even kind of he was ABU because most ex players have allegiances, it’s more that he offers no value or insight at all.

I feel like BT think he’s ‘current’ i.e played for a few PL clubs, is known to our audiences and is young (ish) and I’m all for players who have their careers ended prematurely by injury staying in football to some degree but he just isn’t a good commentator

Does MOTD get decent audience figures nowadays. The highlights on any PL game tends to pop-up on YT within atleast an hour.

Someone mentioned it before but he played us 20 times in his career and didn't win once (drew 4, lost 16).

He's just a shite commentator. Not very insightful or articulate. If he's replacing Gary Linekar, MotD are going to lose viewers by the thousands hundreds dozens.

thankfully it’s not a show I watch - but he’s bloody everywhere. He’s just bland, with no opinion, no insight and says “yeah, no” all the time.

utterly shit pundit/ presenter. We deserve better.

I liked him in his first few appearances a number of years ago...think he came off as quite knowledgeable and intelligent. My opinion has changed since...at this point I wonder if it's an MoTD curse. Anyone setting foot in the studio feels their brain start to melt within a matter of days. Now I think he's bland and trots put the same nonsense clichés as the rest of them. Weirdly he's also started (to me at least) to come across as a bit of a self satisfied know it all. Still think Lineker's more dislikeable though. If only just for the smug, shite 'jokes' he constantly trots out.

Do you think pundits intentionally (whether themselves or instructed by their superiors) to dumb it down? Talk in cliches because it's easier to digest for the viewer and easier to process on their side? Or do you think I'm giving too much credit to them -- and it's just a case of extra screen time illustrates their general bumbling babbling that's not better than your average armchair fan?

I think it’s a bit of both.

what’s the average IQ of a football fan? Let’s be frank it’s lower than average. The reading age of The Sun is known to be 8-10 years old.

the likes of Jenus are chosen because they resonate with the average fan. The average fan who reads The Sun.

it probably works in his favour that as well as being utterly bland in his personality, his career was utterly bland as well - and so no big dislike of him from the off from a big part of the viewership, unlike Carragher or Neville for example.

There was a moment yesterday where Bernardo Silva fouled Ander Herrera but the foul was given against Herrera.

Both Jenas and Owen Hargreaves were applauding the ref for making a good decision.

It was so bizarre.

I hate Carra and McManaman ...but "JJ" is by far the worst. Absolute cretin chelping on about "Trent" and adding no insight. Dull and rather pointless. My mum quite fancies him too, though this is unrelated to my dislike of him!

Lineker’s been more or less the only one worth listening to across the BT and MOTD pundits for ages, only one who can actually articulate his points and the only one who holds a view for longer than the length of a VT.

But I see why he's getting work in football punditry right now. Young, clean cut, very boring and bland so unlikely to hold controversial opinions, fairly articulate, mixed race, he ticks all the boxes TV executives are looking for right now.

Was about to post the same thing. The cynic in me thinks he’s only in the job because he’s mixed race and relatively well spoken. It certainly can’t be for his insight and knowledge.

I actually don’t mind him but he has an obvious dislike for United as many of the recent generation of pundits do. Having spent their careers watching United win everything, it must feel good being able to legitimately slag us off given we aren’t a shadow of what we were.

There’s probably a slightly less arrogant way to put this but when it’s the big Prem or CL games between the real top players I’m really not interested in the perspective of the likes of Jenas, Savage, Clinton Morrison, Stephen Warnock etc even Micah

Good point and not one that I'd considered, actually. I definitely think that there's something comforting to many in the 'game of two halves', 'don't buy a ticket you can't win the raffle' type of analysis and as you say, maybe they're told to bear their audience in mind.

Probably did when there were more than 4 games on a Saturday. Games are too spread out now. Best watching MOTD2.

After the ESL collapsed he went on what he thought was a rant but was a bland monotone speech about how nobody should be guaranteed CL football and his preferred form of punishment was for the 6 to get a big enough points deduction for next season "to basically guarantee the likes of Leicester, West ham and Everton would get in the CL because they deserve it"

He also talked about how that could usher in a new era of English football as though one season of CL money would transform those clubs and like they would suddenly be signing Europe's elite.

This is honestly what I can't stand about him. He speaks like he knows what it takes to win titles or the pressure and expectation of being a top player. He also has a lot to say about managers and tactics and is particularly harsh when it comes to United and Ole. I have no problem with pundits who weren't players at the top level. Kevin Kilbane and Leon Osman are pretty decent when on Motd 2.

I honestly can't stand him but I better get used to him as BBC have inexplicably made him the poster boy for the new era of punditry and presenting.
