How poor is that league though that a 35 year old Young is in a title winning team. At his peak he was average. I’m his last few years he was absolutely shocking. Says it all about the quality really. Congrats to him though!
Nonsense. He was the best full back at the club for a few seasons and was deservedly first choice for a World Cup semi-finalist with no shortage of options.

Happy for him winning the title with Inter.

Was a good player for us, gave everything when he was here, a top pro and a good lad.

Being non-white AND English meant he never got the respect he deserved.

He outstayed his welcome here for a few years (though that’s down to how cheap the club is when it comes to extending players who are clearly not good enough instead of replacing them for actual transfer fees) - but he had some iconic moments over the years.

Couple bangers against in the 8-2; getting bird shite in his mouth; those few months where he suddenly became an amazing wingback and led to that Phillip Lahm thread; those moments where he was standing with the crowd in an away game; came out of lockdown with an unreal hairline etc.

I dont think anybody could dislike him as a bloke. Often seen in the stands with fans when he wasn't playing.

He was a squad level player forced into a starting position, that's all. He was abysmal in his last couple of seasons but he gave us some good years before that and i don't begrudge him a Serie A medal.

Come on he was a pretty poor player. Okay as a wingback in his later years but by the end he was serving up absolutely shocking performances. He couldn’t retain possession, just pumped upfield over the opposition fullbacks. The fact that was a couple of years back now says it all because I strongly doubt he’s got much better, he’s just playing at a considerably lower level. He was never even close as a fullback to Valencia who was genuinely one of the best in league for a couple of seasons at RB.

Wasn’t a fan of him here as a winger but thought he was good at Villa. Actually liked him as a left back though even if I felt he needed upgrading.

Glad he won the scudetto. Heard he might be coming back to England, Watford perhaps?

You don’t actually believe that to you? Loads of players far better than Young don’t get the respect they deserve. Look at the way De Gea is now being dragged through the muck with loads saying he isn’t a Utd legend even after years of top level service. Young doesn’t get that much respect because aside from being a model professional, he was a largely average and forgettable player.

A hard disagree on this. Young was a miles better player than Valencia in his latter years. Valencia being made club captain at United was one of the more bemusing decisions post-Ferguson and a sign of complete malaise. Aside from being unwilling to fulfil duties off the field, his confidence was completely shredded. Game after game his teammates ignored him as an option on the right, when he could do nothing other than the "Valenica shuffle", before passing back inside. There's a reason why Ole sidelined him and he left without a testimonial, whilst eligible for one.

Young's biggest crime seemed to be that he was failed winger in his 30s, which many couldn't see past. He's a decent full back, still with more combined goals and assists than Shaw over the last three seasons.

I swear, there's so much talk of this mythical anti-English bias that I'm going to believe it one day.

Can't speak for others, and there is no denying that being a man of color gives him a lot of challenges he shouldn't have had to bear, but if anything everyone I've spoken to respected the hell out of Young, he always seemed like such a fantastic person. Great professional, great respect for the club and the fans, always seemed like a kind man.

The things people were disagreeing on was how good he was and what worth he had on the pitch.

You really think Young was a better fullback than Valencia, wow that's absolute madness.

Painfully average for the last 2 years for us. Conte sure knows how to rejuvenate these kind of players. Most of his squad in Euro 2016 was bang average, yet as a unit they were decent.

Agree, he got shit on (heh) too much whilst here. Always tried his best for us
Yeah he got a lot of negativity and he was always a top professional.

Not a top level player but did a job for us and gave his all. I’m glad he’s done well over there.

People forget he played pretty much every match, in one of the most demanding roles. At his age that was never easy.

He was a great servant to the club, gave his 100% every match. I can't believe people still have ill feeling towards him.

Loved him. A proper players player. Was incredible with the young lads, by all accounts. Hope he comes back here as a coach one day.

Failed winger was one of the most moronic thing on caf and twitter. He made PL team of the year twice in 2007-08 and 2008-09, won PFA young player of the year playing as left winger.

Even in his first season for us, he had 13 G+A in 19 starts in PL alone and a bunch of penalties.

He had successful career as a winger.

His peak was probably before joining United when he was tearing it up at Villa. Wasn't average at all, that's why we signed him. There was also times when he was performing well for us. Not gonna argue though that he had shockingly bad periods too.

Players improve and players fade. Valencia was a good full back for a long time, but he faded hard and Young actually improved a lot. Valencia just fell off a cliff in 17-18 and barely featured as a result in 18-19.

At Villa, yes, but at United he didn't deliver at the level he had previously. His two seasons at United with the most appearances were his final two full ones, when he played predominantly as a full back, and he was on course to do the same in his last half-season before he left in January. I liked Young, and don't feel labelling him as a failed winger at United is particularly harsh. He wasn't good enough in that role to hold down that spot.

I agree that this played a role. Even Evra was painfully average for a period, since he was playing 50 matches per season for quite a few years.

The guy was a failed winger who couldn't even beat the defenders anymore and then got moved to full back position cause charity united. Still remember his annoying trademark move when he played on the left - faked a cross with his left and then moved the ball to his right to cross into the box. Rinse and repeat. Should have been sold in 2015 with Valencia but again charity United. If we were more ruthless with some of the shite we had we'd be in a much better position but no give time they'll come good - probably. Imagine Bayern turning Robben into a full back cause he couldn't cut it as a winger anymore :houllier:

Others have already touched on it but his peak was pre United. I don't think during his time at the club he was ever good enough for where we wanted to be at the club. Even in his first season where he probably showed the most it was in spells and he probably overstayed his time at the club by 6 or 7 seasons (through no fault of his own). Overall he was a pretty poor signing in my opinion but I've got nothing against him as a bloke and happy to see him win the league with Inter.

He’s won as many league titles in 1.5 seasons at Inter as he did in 8.5 at United. Not bad.

He was a terrible fullback and an average winger during his time at United.

So all white English people are racist now? Sorry that comment is totally wrong and unwarranted. Just because people who post on the Caf got their knickers in a twist about him being Club captain, is more to do with his ability not colour. Personally thought he was a good player for us, who got a lot of crap as he was given the captaincy (just like Maguire is now, who is white and English)

Some people seriously have a goldfish memory. He was an okay player for us. Definitely not the worst in the team but he should have been sold (or at least not play as much as he did) years ago. He was professional and tried his best, nobody is arguing about that but it's clear as day his skillset was subpar for us.

Then we get people like this guy below

First few crosses on that video were great, if we had a striker like Cavani he'd have made something of them, the rest were Bebe level.

But I agree, wasn't a great full back at all but gave his all for the shirt, Valencia was the better winger turned full back.

He's a squad player for Inter and most fans want him out. Some people try to make it seem as if he is taking Serie A with storm.
