Brandon Williams is better than Luke Shaw

Aged poorly but you have to consider at the time he was playing really well and Shaw was either constantly injured or playing average.

You also have to factor in the fact that Williams has had hardly any game time in the first team this season and his position has been changed (I know he's right footed so it should suit him better but still, he had likely adjusted to LB).

Asking him to come on in a game where Roma are throwing everything at us means it would be harsh to judge him on that. Same goes for Telles in some respects but I have less sympathy for him with so much experience.

I'm not sure he has a future at Utd but I wouldn't write him off just yet. Could be a good player to keep around, able to cover LB and RB in emergencies.
He played well against the Europa scrubs at the end of 2019 but since then his performances ranged largely from average to piss poor. Shaw played himself back into form from the start of 2020 and never looked back but some people just refused to take the glassess off.

He had many chances last season. I think the final straw for Ole was the games against Copenhagen and Sevilla. He was absolutely shocking.

I think the issue with Shaw is that everything seems half assed. When he’s playing like he is now it’s irrelevant, but when he’s out of form it looks really bad. Even now when he strolls over to take a corner I’m thinking “fecking hell mate it’s 0-0, can’t you just at least pretend to jog over and get on with it”.

A lot of people were liking how much energy and fight Brandon was bringing at that point. But yeah, looking at it now, I think the quality is lacking.

I said the thread was reactionary nonsense when it was opened and I stand by that. He’s looked decent for a couple of games but even when he first broke into the squad and people were raving about him I didn’t see anything great about him.

He's playing like a lad who has barely played first team football, shockingly enough. Needs a good loan to a PL team who will play him, maybe maybe a top tier championship team.

Agreed he needs a loan.

I really like Brandon but he isn't getting enough game time to progress.

He looked pretty good last season, but still had a lot he needed to work on, though the form faded a bit as the season went on.

His enthusiasm and and gusto could only take him so far. He needs to improve as a footballer, which he hasn't done. To be fair, he hasn't had the opportunity. Luke Shaw's form has been immense and a massive step up from previous seasons, and Wan Bissaka is always going to play when fit. Both are probably our most un-droppable players along with Bruno.

I'd like to see what he can do as a starter somewhere, even if it's in the Championship. I still think there's a good player there.

How disturbing is this?

Especially considering Luke Shaw was in the PL Team of the Season at 18 when he was at Southampton.

Brandon Williams, best you've seen? Wow!
Almost as disturbing as you digging through an 18 page thread and resurfacing a post from a year and a half ago. Get a life.

I refuse to accept he will get any better until he has a haircut that looks like it wasnt done by a drunk scouse outside the DSS office.

The one think I like about Brandon William's is that he can cover both the RB and LB as a single player.

Its something I do in football manager - buy a single 2 sided fullback so it stops you needing to take 2 fullbacks on subs for either side.

Don't see him even good for rotation in future. I am sorry, but i just can't see (United) potential there. He will be good for some PL clubs though

Don't you think?

Surely the best left back at the club. Probably the best all-around full back at the club, purely with regards to his performances in the first team. Needs to be first choice, he's obviously ready.
Well this aged well

I can't believe the knee jerk reaction some of our supporters have. Luke Shaw is one of the best LBs in the world and this isn't something new. He has been for quite a few years. He was our player of the season just 2 years ago. He has always been class. He's just finally starting to get the recognition he deserves...

Has he had one good game at RB ever? He definitely offers something at LB. I think he plays better cutting into the midfield on his right and running up but can't seem to do that from the right coming into his left. Can't seem to progress the ball up the field at all. He also seems uncomfortable defending 1v1 whereas he looked very comfortable there on the left at times last year.

Just because he's played there it doesn't mean he can cover there. He is no Dennis Irwin. Williams is hardly a RB, nevermind a LB. He's too right footed. We tend to over rate our young up and comers and this is no exception. Williams just isn't very good. Hopefully he proves me wrong, but I don't see a future for him at United...

I don't think he is very good either. The only thing that I like is that Ole can pick Daniel James after months of not using him & likewise I can see how a two sided fullback maybe useful in the worst of case scenarios.

Do i see William's staying at United to do that? Not really.

If Shaw is out then Telles will play. If AWB is out I wouldn't be surprised to see Tuanzebe playing there. I've never rated Williams. I'd rather see Laird given a shot...

We desperately need cover for right back. Wan Bissaka has amazing stamina and fitness to play as many games as he does, but we do risk burning him out. Also, if he gets injured, then we are in big trouble.

I never understood why Darmian was let go for virtually nothing. He wasn't amazing for us by any means, but he was a solid professional and could play anywhere in defence. And now Conte has him playing quite well at Inter, kind of like the player we thought we had signed from Torino.

I actually rated Darmian a lot higher than most. Problem was he never really got a solid run of games at RB, but when he did, i always thought he looked good. Same goes for Dalot...

Yes yes yes, this aged badly. And it didn't take long for that to happen.

However, Luke Shaw was nowhere near world class over the last few years, this season it is like his identical twin who happens to be much much better has replaced him. His improvement is beyond belief. He was granted a new contract last time around after a few decent games and then faded rapidly. I just hope this is his new level and he stays there.

A local lad from Harpurhey has lived his dream playing (and starring, at times) for United’s first team. That’s what this club is all about and something that’ll never be taken away from him.

I really like the kid and hope he rediscovers his best form again as there is a player there, but if he has to move on, he’ll have achieved things in his short career thus far not many people can claim.

Thought he looked great when he first came in Williams and I’m surprised at how little he’s played. I think it was Soton who tried to take him on loan? Strange for us to turn that down.

Luke Shaw has been one of the best LB's in the world for a very long time. It just took other people saying it in order for you to recognize it. #trythinkingforyourselfratherthanfollowingthecrowd

Wow, did you come up with that yourself or borrow it from Peterson?

I think Shaw - being the best paid full back in the league I think - has been far from top class for quite a few years. He showed great potential prior to his injury and then he was extremely hit and miss, positionally awful and slow in tracking back. He also lost some of his attacking bravado which has thankfully now returned. His first touch has been excellent throughout, but it's only this season where he's truly stepped up. But I guess you will find it unacceptable that someone holds a very different opinion so you will hashtag some nonsense again. If it's important to you, feel free to.

I'd agree with you but then we'd both be wrong. Shaw has always been class. his only problem has been staying injury free. And this myth of him being slow and awful positionally was just that. A myth. But go on....continue to only rate players when others tell you it's ok to rate them...

Would agree he has looked pretty poor whenever he has played the last year or so after a great breakthrough where he looked very promising. We seem to have had a few defenders come through the academy like that O'Shea looked a fantastic prospect at left back his first season, Evans promising at centre back, even Wes Brown though I hink injuries played a part after a year or two. Of course they have all had good careers but I guess there are levels.

Saying that, personally I still like WIlliams as a squad player. People are starting to warm now to both SHaw and Bissaka as two very good first choice full backs. We have Telles as cover for Shaw if injured and for me WIlliams and maybe Laird next season is decent cover for Bissaka who doesnt seem to pick up any injuries anyway.

Not really. Fosu-Mensah left in January and Laird needed first team minutes. Not to mention Dalot is out on loan. We also needed Tuanzebe for CB cover considering Bailly's injury record.

I'm sure the ideal thing would have been to loan him out in January but the squad needed him to be there for backup.

Not good enough. Even without playing time, he looks void of the technique needed at RB. Very tenacious though this seems to get him carded more than anything
