I don't think many people in this thread have understood @kouroux question  People are just naming good players that are over 6 ft.

Yaya Toure is one of the few players I can think of. Watching Havertz play reminds me of Pogba. He has a similar gait that looks almost lackadaisical which leads to unfair criticism too.

We are not talking about just Netherlands though? And even then the average is 182, so even then he is on the tall side of the spectrum if he is 185.
Didn't realise average height in the Netherlands is 182cm!! .
What's the deal with our scouts pulling out magnifying glasses to spot the likes of Blind and DVB then?

Anyways I'm just over 185cm but I only consider myself just above average even in England (especially when you look at the size of teenagers these days) and I've never felt like I'm at an awkward disadvantage in terms of skill with any ball sport really.

The kickers are the lack of leg room in flights, and finding nice shoes my size (12/13).

His volley against City would be the all time greatest moment of freakish technique for a tall dork.
Yep. Also scored the winner to get Spurs CL football.

Him and Zlatan are the only ones I can think of that fit the description of tall footballer.

Literally everyone I know who has teenage kids is shorter than their offspring. The next generation is going to be humungous.

Here in Norway I believe the average height of the recruits(mandatory military service) was 170 cm in the beginning of the 1900's. Fast forward 100 years and it's 180 cm. It seems that every generation is 2 cm taller than the previous one. I wouldn't be surprised if the average recruit is approaching 182 cm now, although fewer and fewer boys join the army so that may play a part in the recent numbers.

Come to think of it I hardly know any man who's shorter than his dad.

Busquets & Carrick.

I've grown nostalgic for Fellaini since he's been gone. I was so furious when we signed him, but he really loved playing for United and he did provide us with some important moments. He was also such a unique player, and as Moyes said, "he does great things with his chest".

Zaniolo from Roma. Unfortunately he has had 2 ACL injury so far. I hope he can still have a good career.
I really like him, very exciting player. I hope he can recover from injury.

The taller you are, the bigger your feet are, generally. Big feet are a disadvantage in footby.
Why do you say that ?

All else equal (e.g for a given height) I would’ve thought that bigger feet are an advantage because they give you more balance. Messi has big feet for his height, as an example .

It’s interesting to wonder why this is happening. One theory is nutrition in early childhoo but there can’t be any meaningful difference in the food available between 2000-10 vs 1990-2000.

Maybe stress for the mother? With better medical care maybe there are less stressful moments than in the past?

I don't think live in general is less stressful now than 10-20 years ago. Maybe it's a case of bigger parents have bigger children than smaller parents, so that the improvements of the past decades sustain lead to self-sustaining growth of the people until a new equilibrium between environmental conditions and human sizes is reached? Quite an interesting topic when you think about what this could mean long-term.

The question was about parents giving birth to a child that becomes taller than them.

He is shorter than you would think.
I agree. I remember watching the Liverpool Bayern match and was surprised at how much bigger Van Dijk was over him.

Socrates (193) and Ibrahimovic (195) the most obvious examples, but a few others not mentioned so far - Van Basten (188), Veron (186), Rivaldo (186), Asparuhov (186), Brian Laudrup (186), Henry (188), Zidane (185), Waddle (187), Busquets (189), Kaka (186), Van Hanegem (186). Maybe not in the same ballpark as some of the others, but still boasting impressive technique for their position include Vieira (192) and Velasquez (188).
Some of these players are more lanky than "tall", if you ask me personally.

I thought Lewandowski would be the perfect example for this in modern football, with excellent technique, but then just realised he is only 185cm (tall but not huge).

He comes across as much taller on TV, also winning headers pretty much all the time.

We all love United
Lukaku? I’m only joking

Matic for me too. Great player with a sublime left foot and touch. You just have to look at his debut with us against West Ham to understand that

 thankfully it’s clear from that post in isolation I was taking the piss, looks like the person I was replying to had been arguing the difference between fast and quick.

How the feck do you remember that?!!
I generally have a good memory for these things but that one was in my opinion particularly funny.

Partly personal experience, partly anecdotal.

For close control, it is inconvenient to have larger feet. For defending, it makes it easier because larger surface area means more chances of contact. However, smaller feet allow for easier, more precise dribbling.

Ibrahimovic has tiny feet for someone his size while Lukaku has enormous feet in spite of his size. He wears size 14s.

C.Ronaldo by comparison is a size nine despite being a tall guy. Even Pogba does not crack past 11.

There is no way Rivaldo is not at least 190cm. Here is him next to 6'3 Kluivert

My 12 y.o. nephew is taller than his mom already.

I think it's because parents are more health conscious than parents in the past. And more people can afford good food. Also it seems like sports are bigger in schools nowadays.

I know we're a tall people in general, but Cruyff was in no way a tall man. 1m78, that's basically a leprechaun here.
SHit. 178cm is relatively short (for footballer). He looks deceptively big and tall when watching him playing. I don't know why i always thought he's a big fella.
