So many games pass him by in which he contributes nigh on nothing.

He barely touched the ball in that first half. This is a United central midfielder we’re talking about here. Come on, man.

I am desperate for McTominay to be so much better than he is. If Matic was half a dozen years younger McTominay wouldn't get near the starting XI.
Matic was very good 2 years ago...not at his best but really good. But I still think McT and Fred aren't CDM but some kind of energy B2B players with some limitations who will "put a shift in".

Was given a hospital pass by Fred for the Villa goal, so he doesn't shoulder the blame there, but didn't really contribute anything either.

He’s a brilliant squad player and brilliant in the first XI too.

This forum just has very short memories, I mean this just resembles the comments at half time where Ole should be sacked:lol:.

We need another midfielder but it doesn’t mean Mctominay won’t play the big games, the whole team was shit in the first half.

I believe he’s a much better player than rodri.
Brilliant? He is a bloody first choice midfielder of Manchester United who can't control the ball and his general technique is just awful. In which area he is good exactly? Because he scores a goal then and there?

He gets away with doing nothing a lot of the time.

Needs to be replaced soon.

Quiet first half. Made worse cause Fred f’d him over with a hospital pass.

Much better second. Thought he put his stamp on it. Great ball retention and always showing.

He's as much a reason as the other 10 players starting why we’re on this amazing run away from home. Fantastic result today - I will never know why “fans” are going in on him. I could understand it if people went on him when we lost last Thursday - but he didn’t play.

He's not good enough, off the pace today and doesn't offer enough quality either side of the ball.

I feel like Fred’s bottom level is worse and he gives the ball away in dangerous positions more often, but he has more of an upside. It’s painfully obvious, but we need a better on the ball option for this double pivot to work.

If you watch games with him and games without him it's night and day. He is a big reason why we're solid in the middle nowadays.

I thought he was fine. Not much he could do with Fred's pass given the Villa player was right next to him by the time the ball reached Scott. 90% pass completion. Fred completed the most passes of any player on the pitch, Scott 2nd.

I'm completely bewildered by all the posts on here that seem to view McTominay + Fred as a weakness in our team. I think it's a strength, especially given how high we push our full-backs. Just look at the results and performances when one and especially both, are missing. Spurs 1-6 neither started, Sheff United 1-2 neither started, Basaksehir 1-2 neither started, Roma 2-3 Fred started, Palace 1-3 Scott started, Leipzig away 2-3 Scott started.

Overall Scott has been ok this season. He could have performed a bit better. But he and Fred are absolutely crucial to the way we are set-up to play. When we won at PSG both started, same in the win at Spurs, big win against Leeds, win at City, big win over Real Sociedad, Roma 6-2.

I think that’s more because Fred is so much more visible on the field - even when he’s doing poor. McTominay is so peripheral that when he’s playing poorly it’s masked by the sheer fact he’s nowhere to be seen.

I like McT a lot but barely noticed him today to be honest. Much better 2nd half than the first but that’s not saying much.

Poor in the first half, although I think Fred was more to blame for the goal by playing McT into trouble.

Second half he significantly improved. Offers a lot more in the final third than folk give him credit for. In my mind he is a proper #8 and would look really good with a true holding player next to him.

Be was better in the second half, seems to go missing way too often though.

Him and Fred are both fairly average, they don’t significantly strengthen more than couple of teams in top half, maybe don’t significantly weaken more than 2 or 3.

I don’t think we’re going to upgrade either at this summer so both need to improve a lot next season.

Another game that passed McTominay by. We really can't expect to make much more progress if he's seen as a dead cert starter. It almost felt like Fred was playing by himself in that midfield for long stretches

Manchester Utd never lose, just run out of time

He definitely did. First half he was having one of his invisible games, but second half he stepped up and performed how he should be doing all the time. If he did that all the time we'd be in a much stronger position, as the main problem with the McFred combo is that we are normally relying on Fred to do way too much instead of sharing the duties between the two of them.

They both treat the football like a hot potato at times. Its not good enough.

It wasn't a great ball from Fred, cos Fred is pretty panicky in possession, but a Man Utd midfielder should be able to take that ball and manage the situation.

Its harsh on McTominay but we're Man Utd, you gotta be harsh cos the benchmark is being good enough to win the title. I've seen too many good midfielders at Man Utd to rate McTominay (or Fred).

I agree with you that he's disadvantaged by playing so deep but, in many ways, he reminds me Darron Gibson. He's got a great long drive on him, he can get you a goal -- sometimes important goals. Yet he's visibly below the standard.

If you're not at least comparable to a Darren Fletcher or a Nicky Butt, nevermind a Michael Carrick, Paul Scholes, Roy Keane, Paul Ince or Bryan Robson, you shouldn't be regularly starting for United.

Need a new top class CM. McTomminay still has time on his side, but right now he does not offer enough to be a starter, especially not if we have ambitions to the title next year.

Hes decent on a lot of things, but his technique and passing is really not good enough for a United midfilder

He was shit today, really poor display. Fred at least offers energetic performances, McTominay disappears. We definitely need to upgrade on him.

He is such an annoying player. Sometimes you can see what he brings to the team and then there are games today where he is basically a passenger. He had so many opportunities to win the 2nd ball and he just stands there watching.

I get the feeling he wants to be a box to box player, he was much better in the second half when he was given more freedom.

I never have much confidence in him winning the ball back when he is chasing someone. Fouls more often than not.

Still think he's a very good option for us though. Has lots of good qualities.

Fine as a squad player, but I think we need to look elsewhere for the first team.

This guy can't play, it's not that complicated. Send him to Burnley where he belongs. You rarely see footballers with such a poor football brain at this level.

I think it was the last game or the previous one where Cavani was shouting at him to put in the cross and he would not. He simply not good enough. People always blame Lindelof but McTominay is the weak link in our side. yes Fred is poor too but he at least brings energy and never hides while McTominay does not know how to play football.

He hides from the ball a lot when we're in possession building from the back.

I've never been a fan. We desperately need someone better.

McT thanks you for the support. He was poor today. I’m not sure he’s started too many games recently - perhaps a bit rusty. Whatever the reason, he wasn’t good. However, we’ve seen enough of him to see that he’s very useful, and unfortunately for the ‘haters’ he’s one half of our most effective midfield.

He's been drifting through games for months now and I'm not sure what the issue with him is.

He's also not the goal threat he looked like he was becoming for a period earlier in the season.

Pretty badly out of form unfortunately.

We barely have midfielders, you say that like we have options. Look, the guy can't play no matter how much support he gets. He's not even bad in regards to his basic qualities but he simply doesn't process quickly enough on the pitch.

He picked up an injury didn't he. Is it since then?

It’s a pity because I really want him to succeed here but his place on the team looks like the most straightforward to upgrade. It’s funny the way Fred gets stick for being supposedly poor at passing. He’s fecking Pirlo on the ball compared to McT.
When you check their pass completion stats it's very good but when you watch the game you always get the impression that they are never in control of the ball.

Fred is better in the transition. You see him always involved in all the good moves. He has good ability to turn and play pass between lines to set Pogba or Bruno up for the attacking move.

McTominay lacks that ability but he is decent goal threat.

When you see them, you always see their touch is bit heavy, play loose passes, play passes to put others in dangerous position defensively and in McTominay case doesn't move to be the option for the pass.

We should sign at least one CM who is good in both attack and defense, also not scared to spread the play.

He is the first person who needs to be replaced from the current starting line up.

Anonymous apart from the odd foul. Which we should expect cos he's really not as good as we all want him to be. I compared him to Darron Gibson recently, I don't see how I am being unfair. He will score the odd drive from range but he ain't It'd quality.

I've said it in another thread. James Garner should be looking at this guy (and Fred!) and thinking, "I've got a chance next season."
