Don’t think Eric needs to do a re-edit of the United way to include tonight - unless the United way is now to put on no subs - cause they are bang average - despite the fact that the opposition - who are also bang average - have 5 fresh players on - then start planning for penalties at full time - my son is 11 but remembered van gaal having the bottle to sub the keeper- if sir Alex had the same mentality in 99 ole wouldn’t have even been on the pitch - he’d have subbed on May for beckham probably - sad night - but I’ll live off the night on the ramblas and being the first to sing champions of Europe back on the ramblas in 99 - ole - great sub but never going to be a great manager - too nice and too predictable....

Behind the right goal post as "Whiteside shoots!"
We've got to get a top CH and a top holding midfielder now.

We've got a lot of options coming through further up (Amad, Elanga, maybe Pellistri, even Mejbri and Greenwood is still young).

Come on Glazers, I don't give a feck about you turning up at a fan forum, spend the cash (wisely).

And for fecks sake Ole, I love you but make them play quicker. And sub them if they don't.. our team is made for faster transitions, pausing against a defensive block is stupid.

We dominated them for huge portions of the game. Problem. What problem?
We had a lot of possession, but we didn't really do anything. It took a deflection to score. It certainly wasn't a good performance.

He got out managed by emery its that simple. When Emery saw his team struggling he changed their formation instantly and that changed the game Ole did nothing until 105 minutes. Its clear this is on Ole.
Was he though? It was a penalty shootout which they played for. We just weren’t good enough. Nothing to do with being out managed

How many did Spurs win with this world class Poch then?
There’s a big difference between thinking Poch is/was the answer and thinking he’s probably tactically superior to Ole..

I’m sure a lot of fans will be all over this as an unlucky penalty lottery.... but the hardest thing about this loss was how we barely created anything - and only scored from a lucky ricochet - in a game we were overwhelming favourites to win, had a hugely superior set of players, and very visibly made no attempts to tactically adapt once it became clear we’d lost the momentum....

I’ve been wavering on Ole, and have been in both camps at various points... and despite my early objections I can’t deny he’s done a reasonable job in improving us from what we were.... but this loss is undoubtedly all on him. It was a spectacular managerial failure against a manager deemed not good enough for Arsenal! .., and it deserves the brutal autopsy coming its way

Ole cost us. Rashford was a passenger the entire 120 minutes, but anyone who's watched us recently could have anticipated that. Then to not make a single sub until extra time is just terrible management.
Totally agree with this. I don’t know what’s wrong with Rashford but playing him is like fielding ten guys every time. He’s half the player he used to be, and I say this as a fan and admirer of the guy. He may want to play, but Ole should take responsibility and think of the team. He should not play until whatever his problem is has been sorted out.

Meanwhile, Ole will not make substitutes until it’s just too late. Villarreal turned the game in extra time because their team had an injection of energy and ours did not. This has happened repeatedly this season and Ole does not appear to learn from it. I’m sure he’s a good man manager but tactically he just doesn’t have what takes.

this was an opportunity to really capitalise on the season, but it has been wasted tonight. With the talent we have, we should have blown this horrible Villareal team off the field.

Finishing second in the league and runners up in the Europa league means we are not far away so our owners shouldn`t have to invest too much into the squad .
We don't need it, according to this forum tonight. Get Poch in and we'll win the league with Dan James on the left and Amad Diallo on the right. Rashford's done so he won't be playing and the current manager is wasting Greenwood on the right, but he'll see sense and go with those two.

Two players out of 25.
Is the gotcha here that you'd take the manager but only 2 players from the best English side he's managed?

What sort of stupid logic is that? You think 11 men should beat 16 over 120 minutes?

We gave up before ET kicked off. We kept Rashford on the entire game and played essentially 10vs12 as a result. Shit management.
So the team was both good enough to win the game and needed 5 subs to help them get through extra time, having not won the game.

Your question doesn't make sense. The players were good enough, but several of them were tired and needed to be substituted. Emery had 5 fresh players on, and we struggled as the game progress into extra time. Ole saving his substitutes for penalties is frankly embarrassing for a club of this stature. He needs to be proactive and go for a win.
Not sure how you can go for the win more than playing all 5 of our senior "flair" players at the same time, to be honest. If going for the win is bringing on Amad Diallo with 30 minutes to play, fair play.

That's what small clubs do. It looked like we are going for pens since the ET started.

The most undeserving winners of a EL ever.
I feel so bad for DDG but feck me what a poxy penalty.

Just gutting, actually still shaking a bit here, was confident we would do them.
FFS. The season we have had, this team of ours deserved to take home some silverware, easily the better team.

Haha yeah I saw his post above. It really was though. Ole can’t control players playing shit but he can make an effort to fix it. I really take issue with our subs and how our plan became increasingly negative.
Of course, anyone and their dog knows Ole should have made changes earlier to affect the game. I don't buy the bench is poor argument - when we are facing Alberto Moreno, Coquelin, Albiol, Capoue, Bacca, Paco Alcacer and a bunch of other has-been washouts.

This is Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's ceiling - Sevilla and Villareal...

How? By running the ball into crowds constantly? By having no control of the game? By not giving it to open players? He was awful
Are you serious? He was easily the best player on the park tonight, proper driving force through midfield.

This is on Ole.

We've been suffering from set pieces for more than 2 years, and it's amazing we can't improve on that.

We've been suffering from a lack of change in games, some players stay longer than they should (like Rashy always does) because Ole doesn't know what to do!! He's clueless, and doesn't have balls to do what is right and fair. Some may say that our bench was weak, but ffs, sometimes just the fact to try something different could be enough, we should've gone for it. There's no excuse for the lack of subs.

I don't blame De Gea. We all know he is terrible in PKs, he just can't defend. So by keeping him for the penalty shootout, it's an awful decision. He should've put Henderson before the end of extra time, just like Van Gaal has done it at the World Cup.

There was progress, but not much honestly. 8 more points than last season is good, but we've still failed to put on a proper title challenge, and we finished 12 points of City.

We had everything in place to beat them, no matter what. They wanted more? Maybe. But that's not the only reason. We were the better team, but not by much. And in the end, we didn't deserve to win.

I thought ole be looked more passionate during the game then he usually does…or maybe it was a more desperate look.

And you sound like a WUM. They won the shootout lottery, which was the only way they were gonna win this match after parking the bus for most of it. No way did they deserve the win.
They had 12 shots to our 14...1 to our 2 on target...

16 European finals in a row won by Spanish teams when facing non-Spanish teams I think. Going back all the way to 2002.

We're still a pretty dysfunctional team. It's not much of a surprise to me that we failed to break down a team that sat in tonight. We've failed to break down these types of teams all season. Finishing second this season papered over the cracks. We're just not that good. Many of the players that played tonight are not good enough to challenge for stuff. Lindelof, rashford, Fred etc.

Rashford has been awful almost every game since the turn of the year, yet he is picked and left on when it’s obvious he only serves a purpose as a passenger. Ole really shows his lack of cajones, leaving players on the field due to reputation rather than form or effectiveness.

Penalties are a crapshoot, would be really good to have a goalkeeper that would save the odd one rather than looking absolutely non plussed between the sticks.

Will Ole learn from anything obvious this year, that’s the real question .

We didn't bottle the penalties, we bottled the 120 minutes. We weren't good enough, it was the sort of performance we've seen far too often from this group of players, and questions seriously need to be asked. Tactically I just think it was much of a muchness. Hoping for our best players to just do something brilliant, that was it. It's that simple. We lost to the Spanish Burnley, just a very tragic end to the season.

Just finish watching the highlights.. and boy was that a long penalty shootout..

It was very disappointing. and even by watching the highlights it is obvious Rashford is very very poor. And De Gea is useless at saving penalty kicks.

So, my superstitious routine is still true. Watch United LIVE and they will either lose or draw. I was contemplating on whether to watch this LIVE or just wait for the highlights, I did watch LIVE for about 40 minutes before switching it off. But it turns out, my watching united LIVE curse is very much alive.

Sorry guys....

You should considering, if the Cafe got their way, the bench would be getting replaced with 3 or 4 of the guys who started tonight.

Responsibility lies with Ole, we were clearly on top yet he allowed Villareal to gain the upper hand by not making any substitutions when some of our players were clearly tiring and playing badly, how Rashford stayed on is beyond me, he had a shocker all game and Pogba looked exhausted after 70 minutes.
Ole needs to be braver with his subs and act quicker, hopefully he will learn from this and improve.

I don’t think Ole did himself any favours prematch saying that tonight was a reward for the effort from this season and from last season. I think everyone else would be expecting more than a europa final every two years.

Well we’re missing Martial who has a hell of lot more skill than Rashford in those 1-2-1s. They were a horrible team to break down. No one in La Liga has scored more than 2 goals against them. That includes RM, AM and Barca. They are dull as ditchwater but hey, they have a plan and stick to it.
No were not. He was awful all season when he played, got dropped, then all of a sudden injured in training so misses the rest of the season.

Was worried about the record coming into this final that Spanish teams had played non Spanish 15 times in European finals (CL & EL) with Spanish sides winning all 15 finals. 16 from 16 now.

Emerys record in this finals was strangely ignored and in 2016 his Sevilla side won the Europa league after finishing 7th in La Liga so history repeated itself. It was Klopps Liverpool that had to take that defeat on the chin and from that defeat they improved their squad with a number of good signing. United need to do simliar now but how likely under the Glazers?

The most cowardly tactics ever by a manager - making subs in the 116 minute to bring players for penalties like a provincial team manager.

DDG can feck off.

Ole didn't lose the match. A 1-1 is a draw, not a defeat, last time I checked out.

When your GK is unable to save a single penalty out of 11, and misses his shot, you know he needs to feck off from this club. Aloof looking has-been.
Are we discounting the 120 minutes leading up to the penalty shootout?

That doesn’t suggest they deserved to win...

We didn’t earn the right to win it, and we lost a pen shootout...shit happens!

We beat Chelsea on penalties in the UCL final but were far from the better side. Same
With Bayern Munich in 99. Shit happens

Looking for Eric
We waste the first half and all of ET, players did not look tomove the ball quickly. Totally unaceptable in a cup final, we should be forcing the game against opponents of so called inferior quality.

We didn’t lose it last year. We were fuxked in the semi. Just about got through in the quarter.
The semi was the same though. There’s no way we should have lost that game but we did. That’s the point I was making.

Are you getting him confused with Bruno?
Nope my friends and I actually watched mctom the whole game specifically because we told another friend that he deserves his place. Yet he proved us wrong. Constantly held onto the ball too long, kept running it into nowhere and lost the ball, didn't produce any good forward passes. In fact he didn't do anything positive. And I actually like him. But as a cm he was rubbish

It's laughable that you're suggesting those stats show that they were deserving. Having fewer shots, both on and off target, doesn't make you more deserving of a win.

Not that we were great, but we were clearly the only team trying to win the match before pens.

I have never been able to give a shite about a competition we should never even enter and am a long standing Ole apologist.... But today's loss was very disappoining. Especially the way we played.

Though our pathetic bench didn't help things. When people ask 'should we sign Kane and nobody else' the answer is no

As bad as it feels right now, we have made progress this season. We must have a good transfer window. Achieve that and we can challenge next season. It's a massive summer ahead.
