It's so strange how much some of you hate this guy compared to other players who left you.
Not really, since hes been talking shit about us and himself since his last season here. Hes the kind of guy who would slide on his knees in front of his mates iphone when he scores against his 5 year old nephew in their back garden. And then say something like 'Old Trafford do you miss me'.

I’m 90% sure it’s down to the extreme polarising opinions. I can’t stand him mainly because he was the worst starting striker I’ve seen at the club. When you then come in and see people calling him world class it’s just baffling and that likely sparks arguments. To be fair on him though, he played well yesterday.

Could you give me a few examples of him "talking shit" about Man United? I'm genuinely curious and that would shed some light on all the hate!

without going into everything - how many years ago did we sell Depay?

Is it a criticism of the club, that a player we sold four years ago has a good season?
Memphis was mediocre for our ambitions and level as a football club. Anyone pointing him out as an example of players shining post United hasn't a clue. His incompetence with us didn't have anything to do with us. He was absolutely crap. Couldn't beat a defender in 30 attempts and generally seemed lost. Same case with Lingard etc

its been gone over so often on here. At least on a new thread once a month.

go look through the old Lukaku threads if you want a refresh on why he’s disliked and examples of how he treated the club.

I'm on my phone all day so I cant really search but I'll try to remember to look some up if others havent by that time.

It all started with his 'grown ass man' comments.

Oh, and the pointing. The fecking pointing

I am baffled by Lukaku's scoring numbers of late. What is wrong with the guy?

“cart horse” “no first touch” “waste of money” …….

Don’t understand it myself, but as I’ve already backed him 6/1 for top goal scorer, carry on banging them in Rom :D

Manchester Utd never lose, just run out of time

It's due to his terrible attitude during his last 12 months here. Turned up unfit and remained that way the entire season, could barely break into a run and spent more time pointing than actually doing anything, constantly blamed everyone else for his mistakes (and considering he was the worst performing player on the team there were a lot), talked to the media as if he was fine and the other players needed to get their shit together, and was a massive teachers pet for Mourinho. Then when we were negotiating with Inter he refused to come back and train with us. After he was sold, he got all pissy about criticism and released some of the clubs internal training stats, and has made a number of other comments bitching about the criticism he faced while playing for us (refusing to acknowledge that the criticism he faced in his second season was 100% his own fault).

There's a reason he's up there with the likes Di Maria, Tevez and Heinze as one of the few ex-players most Man Utd fans dislike.

Perhaps talking shit about United isn't the correct word but he said he thought about leaving United after his 2nd match after being bought from Everton. Talking about being a "grown ass man" in terms of handling critism, and yet moaned about being singled out at United for critism by the fans in a period where he was geniuenly woefull. However perhaps he is ripped upon a bit unfairly, but his clumsiness at times makes it hard not to. At least it seems his ability in that regard as improved in the last season.

It was relatively benign stuff. Came across as a bit of a wally but you’d have to be seriously thin skinned to take much offence.

It is quite normal for fans to try and find reasons to dislike players that flop at one club then do well at the next one. Classic transference.

Lukaku thought about leaving the club as soon as he joined.

"From the beginning, it was a ‘Yes, but...’. I scored in the European Super Cup, and they said, ‘Yes, but he got another one wrong’.

"When I first started out in the Premier League, I scored against West Ham, and they said, ‘Yeah, but...’. Since then I imagined how it would feel to leave the club. One year at United erases the previous eight."

He wasn't up to it if criticisms like that made him think about leaving right away.

Inter’s medics and Conte’s attitude put him into his most glorious shape ever. Will he revert to bad habits, now that such exceptional circumstances do not concur anymore?
His problems at Utd certainly weren’t due to ‘bad habits’.

He’s famously quoted as saying that he wanted to leave the club after his 2nd training session.

The ‘issues’ were that Utd didn’t have a clue as to how to get the best out of his exceptional talents.

He was still a fantastic striker for Utd - he scored circa 1 goal from every 3 shots - the same stats as Harry Kane except that Harry Kane got much more service, so took many more shots and consequently scored a lot more goals.
Utd supporters wearing the pink tints have a downer on the guy but it’s unfair and unwarranted as it was the clubs management that failed the player rather than visa versa.

In all fairness, many City supporters (blue tints on) have a similar negative take on him because he was a Utd player and didn’t function as he should in a red shirt.
However, that’s just twisted attitudes, that don’t detract from what he clearly is, and I’d happily have him at City.
In fact I’d prefer him to Kane because I think he’d be better than Kane in a functioning system that served his talents.

It’s academic for Utd supporters now because he wouldn’t return to the club after his experience there.
What isn’t academic is that the issue of not getting the best out of extremely talented players still persists and great players often wilt under the clubs care (VDB being one recent example - I only wish that we had him as he’s fantastic).
Anyhow, that’s my take on it and it’s not due to any lack of respect - just me, looking in from the outside as a supporter of football.

you don’t even have to try to find reasons why Lukaku failed. Far too easy.

Imagine Lukaku fecking up an intricate passing move for City and Guardiola pulling his non-existent hair out

I hope saint Pep is thinkering again with his Formation (just like that last CL Final) and sign this dude (instead of Kane).

Indeed. Even the "grown ass man" stuff was when he was at the club and a defence of the manager.

It was cringeworthy but I have no idea how people can think it was "shit talking" Man United.

Imagine if he held up a "Rip Fergie" sign or likened his time at the club to being a slave!

He didn't speak shit about the club. But he did not have the mentality to push through difficult times and that made me seriously question whether we really lost a great player when he was sold.

He also did stupid shit like talk drop inter Milan and Conte by name whilst being a United player under Ole's reign, which was disrespectful. What also really pissed me off was him leaking his peers fitness data, disclosing Shaw coming last in a particular exercise. Oh and saying how he wanted out after the second training session is pretty rude too.

Basically too many dick moves to warrant me feeling like we missed out on keeping him.

He's a lot more lean now, probably the best shape he's been in since his days at Everton.

I wonder was it Mourinho's ideas for him to build muscle and bulk up to fit in with his game plan

who are all these players? Who was the last player United regretted selling is a better question? Pique? Rafael? Herrera? Nani?

all very debatable. The 4 one mentioned above would have as many people saying we should have sold them as those who say we should have kept team.

it certainly wasn’t Di Maria, Lukaku, Darmian, Smalling, Schweinsteiger, Schneiderlain, Rojo, Welbwck, Hernandez, Evans, Kagawa, Depay, Miki.

should we expect every player we sell to be shit? There’s nothing wrong with players going on to play well for other clubs - but actually I see that most players who leave the club don’t do well. There’s no issue here.
Di Maria, Depay, Lukaku have been some of the best players in their leagues and teams since they left. That being said, I doubt they'd succeed here, for various reasons.

Agree with this. It’s why the questions should be - do we regret selling any of these players? My answer is no.

it’s also absurd that some people think every player should leave United and perform worse. I wouldnt want to see any of those three players ever play for united again - but 2 of those players were sold for £50-70m - of course they should do well for their new club.

I think we should, in the sense that this club should do better at getting their signings to work. Better scouting, better tactics that fit the players that we buy. I personally think Bruno and Pogba will shine this tournament, but we can barely get them to play together and dominate bigger teams. Di Maria is a difficult case, with the burglary. But Lukaku and Depay were clearly misused at the club. They were very poor in their last season, but it was never a created setting for them to shine. I think that's a big problem at this club, and players go on to prove how good they are elsewhere.

Here we'll say; "they couldnt handle the pressure".

Doesn’t have to be black or white here. Lukaku is flawed as a player and some of his behavior at United was not great, but since Fergie retired United hasn’t had anything to write home about as far as #10s or creative presence has been concerned. It’s been part of the problem with United over the last decade.

Hard to score goals when your team lacks play making and creativity.

He was great in this Brazil game actually, in the last World Cup, even if he didn't score this day. That's why this stat isn't accurate imo.
What stat isn't accurate? He's rated as a goalscorer?
Also forgot to add England - 4 games 1 goal.
He's played against 15 good teams and you can barely count the goal's he's scored against them

You can play a very good game without scoring goals. He didn't score against Brazil but he was crucial for their win and a big reason they scored the second goal.

You can't just say "he didn't score so he had no impact".

That 2nd goal is more De Bruyne than Lukaku

Yeah, that run he made throughout the field to get the ball to KDB absolutely had no role in anything.
You're giving Lukaku way too much credit for that goal. A belter from outside the box and Lukaku had a good game based on that move?
Also just checked his goalscoring record against top 6 in Italy
Last 2 seasons 20 games 8 goals - 3 from pens
He's just not that good when playing against top teams

If De Bruyne made that run and Lukaku scored that goal you will still be saying that was all De Bruyne.

All you do is discredit anything he does do and criticize him for anything he doesn't do.

You will always hate on him no matter what he does, you're a joke of a poster.
