Arsenal dumped a sack of shit on United. Good business for Arsenal and getting rid of Alexis, but there is no planet in which it can be persuasively argued that United was shrewd in taking Arsenal's problem child off your hands. This isn't just 20/20 hindsight...there really was a constituency here which questioned the wisdom of that signing.
Don't care about the argument y'all are having but there's always a group that questions a signing. There are people questioning Sancho and Varane right now. People questioned signing Bruno.

Can't really use that argument.

Varane, looking for a new challenge, probably took a quick look at our set-pieces and went "yep, challenge accepted". Fair play to him

I think for better or worse, we'll be entering the Haaland and/or Kane sweepstakes next season. If either don't come off then I think someone like Vlahovic at Fiorentina could be worth a gamble. Or, if we want to go down the Prem-proven route, someone like Ings could come in and be a squad player. I think our need for a striker is not because of a lack of quality per se, but a lack of numbers. Greenwood may ultimately be that man, or Martial may even have a renaissance after a tough season last year, but if one/both of them go down, then we're severely lacking. My personal preference would be for Kane, as his age profile would suit a nice and easy transition for Greenwood, but Haaland's history with Ole and Sancho can't be discounted either.

Re the squad as a whole, I do agree with almost everything you say to an extent. I do think we'll be much improved, but a title challenge is that DM away for me, still. The most important thing in football is that first pass out of defence and that link between defence and attack. Unfortunately, and while I do really like both Fred and McTominay, they just aren't at that required standard. It's not just about protecting the defence, it's about setting the tempo of the game and breaking the lines of the opposition and giving those stellar attackers as much of the ball as possible. McFred collectively do a decent-good job of protecting the defence but in possession, their game lacks penetration. That's not their fault, and both players would be much better individually if they were paired with a DM. I respect them both for stepping up and doing a job for the team, but I think it's pretty clear that no one at the club sees them as the solution long-term, or that we will be in the position of winning the biggest competitions with both of them in the engine room.

For me, I think the following is achievable for us:

League: 80-84 points, which should be good for Top 4 and a strong showing against the rest (but with the strength of Chelsea and City, and Liverpool getting their best player back, I genuinely don't know where in the Top 4 it would place us)
FA and EFL Cups: go as far as possible and win or both of them
CL: QF is about par, SF if we get a good draw

A good DM sees us pushing past 85 points and seriously stretching the 90 points mark, and would get us one, to two places better in the league irrespective of who is in front of us.

I think what we have to realise is that a ball hasn't been kicked yet and we only have to look at Chelsea who had an even better window than ours now, last year: Werner, Havertz, Silva, Mendy, Chilwell, Ziyech gave them more quality and strength in depth collectively than Sancho and Varane have given us. Yet, they weren't great in the league and we comfortably finished ahead of them despite not really improving our starting XI from the season before.

If we were to challenge this season it wouldn't be a surprise, but I wouldn't necessarily bank on us winning it while City and Chelsea have the advantages they have in terms of their squad depth.

Without doing any research at all, my guess would be no one?
Schweinsteiger was probably the one closest to this though.
May be Victor Valdes. Minus the 1 UCl he has won more I guess.

Is he actually good? There's surely a reason Real Madrid are willing to let him go, is he an upgrade on what we have at present?
He wanted to leave for a new challenge. It happens. After 9 seasons in Spain, people with ambition want to try a new league, new club, no doubt if he joined us 9 years ago and we’d been very successful after 9 seasons he’d want to try a new league.

Still got a feeling, we might have an agreement with RM that if we can’t extend with Pogba then we’ll accept an already agreed offer from them, hopefully after we signed a CM or CDM, don’t mind giving DVB the second main CM role if we have a proper CDM

Dunno why potential leaving of Pogba is counted as minus in here, majority of this place cant wait to see back of him, not to mention fans outside this forum, if he leaves, guess same muppets will use it how ever it fits their narative and moving goal posts.

Regarding Varane, thats very solid price for defender of his calibre, hope he stays healthy.
Really tough one with Pogba. If given freedom to roam more and a solid DM behind him, he is great. But for me, it is him OR Bruno against the good sides. Their best positions are in similar areas of the pitch and I would choose Brunos mentality over Pogba all day.

Defensively Pogba makes too many mistakes. Offensively he can be world class.

If we replace Pogba with a top quality DM it will actually be an upgrade, in relation to what out first team actually needs.

Man this transfer makes me so happy! We really needed to improve on Lindelofs position. What a pairing we'll have!

The thing is Pogba has played with Herrera and younger Matic. Both were quite good at doing the dirty work and yet Pogba didnt have the same impact as Bruno. While Bruno just walked into the squad, joined Fred Scott midfield that people said were bang average and still had very good numbers. So if theres only one option to play to keep the balance of midfield, it has to be Bruno. Pogba wont be a massive loss, it is a loss that is very manageable.

I can’t really believe this is going to happen a right winger and Raphael Varane, it’s nearly as if our club is competent in the transfer market all of a sudden.

What will you do if he signs in 2 weeks? Will you sing Woodward's praises or actuellement like a hypocrite and still demean him?
I'll know the damage Woodward has done to the club - if you don't, you haven't been watching

They also have a better manager, a better system
Blah. They have ability to spend unreasonable amount of money is what they have. And possibly better recruitment, but either way - the ridiculously deep squad is what makes the difference for City, the whole "genius manager" and "better system" are mostly urban legends. Genius manager my ass, got beat by Chelsea and failed again to win Champions League. Also, honestly - there is no one superior system in football, that is the beauty of football.

Let's hope we don't also sign a great defensive midfielder, because then we would have no excuse not to win the league :)

Only won a World Cup and 4 CL’s… so can’t see what he’ll bring to a team that regular gets to the last hurdle but seems to miss that winning mentality to get over the line.

Lots of people have forgotten this. And more specifically United's own roots to success to football. They now look at the likes of system managers like Pep, Klopp and want to emulate them blindly. Forgetting that even post SAF, the teams most successful in CL have had similar systems to United (Zidane's RM, Bayern).

Do you think we will get any form of announcements before medical and he flying here like Sancho?

I'm expecting a "Comunicado Oficial" from Madrid anytime soon.

You have poor reading comprehension. I never said Varane is like Vidic. Read again as many times as you need:

and make sure you take your time, so you don't make erroneous statements again.

Also, the prospect of Lindelof never being seen again in our starting 11 has me prepping the biggest post-covid jamboree
I’m more surprised how many you are who don’t understand how he plays or what style he has.

He’s unquestionably a genius when it comes to using those vast resources to annihilate cannon league fodder, no doubt. He’ll win many many more titles that way.

Where he’s nothing like genius is when he comes up against comparable sides, when the playing field is much more levelled out.

So this is what it's like to have a world class pair of CB's.. it's been so long I barely remembered the feeling. Can't wait for the season to start!

Woodward would have to sign 11 players, all the world's best on their positions today! That's if he could have any chance of making up for his 8 years of dive bombing our club into decline.

He also was one of the first to report our interest in Sancho before he was sold to Dortmund. Luckhurst is the transfer muppet king for 2021
He reckons we're still after a holding midfielder and a right-back (I assume that would be contingent on us finding buyers for Lingard and Dalot), plus a replacement for Pogba if he goes.

We're a no 6 away from being a seriously good side.
I'd say we're a no 6 away from being a what I call "lucky" contender. I still think we're a RB and ST away from being a seriously good side considering that AWB can't cross for his live and Cavani can't play any game.

If Ole will somehow work some magic with them rotations then yes, we might be in for a surprise next season.

Why would Real use up their wage allocation on Pogba when they're saving it up for Mbappe?
