I think Grealish will flop at City, his game isn't disciplined enough to play for Pep, same reason Southgate wouldn't start him for England. He needs a mostly free role and licence to wander.

I also don't think he'll enjoy playing in a rigid system.

Is there a reason this deal isn’t done yet? With the amount of money City are offering it’s pretty obvious Villa would have accepted instantly. Perhaps the player himself is stalling because he favours coming to Utd?

They are offering 75M, Villa want 100M?

That’s wishful thinking, it’s pretty clear we’re not interested so I doubt he’s holding out any hope.

I think people here get too hung up on the one poster's quite frankly OTT claim of him being a "generational talent" and "new Ronaldinho" and this has soured the debate a bit.
Bruno isnt a generational talent either, and I dont give a single feck about it. He's a brilliant player, and so is Grealish, and that's all that matters. One guy called him a generational talent, and everybody lost their mind over it as if that was the consensus.

Well that’s not true for a start (also… Ronaldinho). At least follow the fecking debate.

I'd suggest Pep is well aware of what he's getting, and he has a history of improving players. Sterling is a much better player under Pep, Stones is the same. He'll improve Grealish if he goes to City. He has the talent to become one of the best players in the world, in my opinion.

I think it's this kind of hyperbole that sees people go the other way. He's shown absolutely nothing to suggest that he has it in him to be a top five or even ten player in the world. A very good player, sure, but one of the best in the world? Never.

I'm guessing it has to do with the ongoing case of the Premier League against Man City in regards to the FootieLeaks revelations. Can't see how they'd want to flex their financial muscles until they've been absolved of any wrongdoings. It would put the spotlight firmly on them otherwise.

In what world is Jack Grealish better than Harry Kane, KDB or Salah? Its not even debatable so I'm lost why some talk about him arguably being the best in the league. You add in other non forwards like Kante and Van Dijk and it becomes clear at the very least he's not a top 5 player.

You then have the likes of Bruno, Son, Sterling, Mane, TAA who have all outperformed him in his time in the PL. I'm not saying he's not a top player but I've never seen a player who has achieved so little to receive some of the praise he has. And if people want to talk about talent, I see more in Sancho, Foden and Havertz, players all far younger and accomplished than he is.

I really want him to join City just to see how he performs there. He might do well or not but talk of him going there and being their best player and best in the league is laughable. The only time he's faced similar competition and scrutiny was at the Euros with England and he was seen as one of many rather than the main man.

I like Grealish but agree entirely with this. I think sometimes people are bewitched by how easy his play style is on the eye, tbh.

He didn't? I didn't watch the Championship so your statement can very well be true, but I remember before the first game of the season after Villa had just gone up, that the commentator (who is an avid Norwich fan) kept raving about Grealish saying stuff like he might be the best player in Championship history (or something similar). Thought it was a bit annoying at first, but Grealish was unplayable that day when Villa shocked Spurs.

Whilst I do agree that he hasn't showed much until the last couple of seasons, I think you also have to bear in mind that players have different trajectories. Sancho's, Mbappé's and Haaland's numbers are insane for their age, but they could also fizzle out into nothing when hitting 25-26 (though I really much doubt that). As for Grealish, I think he has really benefitted from spending his early professional years improving his physique in the Championship. I remember when he first broke through and people were saying he was a huge talent. All I saw was a skinny lad trying to use the same playing style he got now, but he mostly got bullied off the ball which looked a bit comical at times, which is in contrast to those previously mentioned. Now most opposition players can't handle him. Wonder how he would have been viewed if Spurs got their hands on him for £20-25m back when he was in the Championship.

I think people here get too hung up on the one poster's quite frankly OTT claim of him being a "generational talent" and "new Ronaldinho" and this has soured the debate a bit.
From what I saw he stood out of course, but not how much you'd expect someone at his age and his current level/hype. Like Bruno at Sporting, I saw Portuguese fans saying on reddit he was the best player their league has had since Deco was at Porto maybe (their level while in Portugal), and was completely dominant. I never got that impression with Grealish, who while he was very good didn't until this past season look like a truly top player for me.

As you say though, different trajectories sometimes. I just can't have a player who has had half a season at a top level to someone like Sancho who has been one of the best teenagers ever to play in the Bundesliga and statistically is right up there with Mbappe and ahead of any other young prodigy with their production in a big league in the modern game. They're on different worlds with what they've proven so far, despite Sancho being 5 years younger. So when I see OTT comments like best English talent since Rooney or the world generational thrown around, it's laughable. He's like Isco but a late developer. Isco was excellent and had 1 or 2 world class seasons, but he wasn't generational.

Pogba isn’t a generational talent. He’s an excellent footballer though. I think this is where a lot of the trouble comes from. That and timing. If we signed a 23 year old Pogba now and put him into this team that we now have, he would be looked upon more favourably. He was expected to take the team we had back then and raise it levels. A team is the sum of its parts….we’d still need a top defensive midfielder now to not see Pogba’s deficiencies highlighted.

Man for man, in terms of the impact he's made he's been one of the best players in the PL playing for a rank average side. You could make the same argument about any player not currently at a top 5 side unless and until they move up a level.

Nothing is guaranteed but time will tell. I don't see any reason why, with his skill set and attitude, he can't shine for City (or any other big club) at the very top level. He's got huge potential. whether he fulfils it is a different question all together but based on what I've seen, I don't see how a move to a better side doesn't improve him.

People are deluding themselves if they think he's going to flop at City. I've watched pretty much every Villa game he's played since they got promoted and he's on another planet to his team mates. In terms of raw talent he can get up there with the likes of KDB, he's not there yet but I'd be very surprised if he doesn't get far better figures at a better team. Beating a man, picking a pass, winning free kicks, the weight of pass, he has it all.

If City get him for £100m it'll be an absolute joke. I was hoping City get stuck on instead because at least then you can hope he gets injured. With Grealish I think they pretty much walk the league.

With the spotlight firmly on them for their dodgy FFP business, how can City possibly afford to shell out north of £200 million on both Kane and Grealish?

It's just not plausible.

FFP relaxed this season due to covid. They also keep escaping any punishment so why should they care

They're not getting Kane imo. No one is paying the £150m required. They will sign Grealish and probably another full back, because Pep just loves to stock pile em.

I referenced Rooney because a lot of people are comparing Grealish to him. Rooney had raw talent that was on display from a young age. Of course this isn't the case with everyone i.e. Grealish, who has matured into a very decent player. Calling him phenomenal is laughable. The only phenomenal players in the PL are KDB & possibly Kane. Or maybe we just have different views of the word.

He's had one very good season (also partly injured) where he obviously had a huge impact on an average PL team. How about the season before, where he played in 36 PL games, yet they finished 17th? He's also failed to ever score more than 8 goals in the league (this includes the championship), nor register more than 10 assists. I don't care how many times he's been fouled etc. being fouled doesn't win you football matches.
We must have different definitions because I'd say Van Dijk, Salah, Mane, Alexander Arnold and Kante are also phenomenal. But that's fine.

Regardless, calling out numbers is a bit short sighted. In Zidane's best season he scored 12 in all competitions. He managed to score 8+ league goals in just 3 of the 17 seasons that he played. He also matured and got a big move in his mid twenties. I'm not suggesting we compare the two players just yet, but you've got to see that numbers aren't everything.

Look, this could go round in circles all day.

My point is, Grealish is not a "world-class" player, nor is he on the level that Rooney, Ronaldinho or Zidane were for the matter. The English press have hyped him up beyond belief. He is a decent player, perhaps he could become world-class, or phenomenal like Mane :D. Only time will tell.

I think we actually agree. It's all about definitions really. This is how I'd categorise, just for reference:
Awful < Poor < Average < Decent < Good < Very Good < Phenomenal < World Class < Legendary/Generational Talent

Rooney, Ronaldinho & Zidane are top tier.
De Bruyne is the only proven World Class player in the PL imo, though Kante and Kane are close.
Then there are a few phenomenal players that I'd suggest walk into any team in the league. I believe, rightly or wrongly, that Grealish is nearing that level.

I guess time will tell, but if he goes to City I expect him to improve again in terms of both performance and numbers.

You obviously weren’t a United fan back then, too young? Eric absolutely won them the league, without him we were 100% catching them.
His impact at Leeds is more than a little overstated. He started six league games and scored three goals, all against teams in the bottom half. Hell, after he joined, Leeds promptly dropped points in four out of the next six games.

And it wasn't down to him that United only managed five points out of the last fifteen.

He is not a generational talent like Ronaldinho, because barely anyone in the PL is, apart from a handpicked few(Kane, VVD, KdB). That's not a damning indictment like people are making it out to be. Bruno, Shaw, Maguire etc arent generational talents either. It doesnt matter.

What matters is Grealish is a top player, one of the best players in the PL. He is among the best in his position in the world on current form.

I'm jealous that City will get him. Hope he flops there.

For those who repeatedly keep saying we dont need Grealish because we have Martial/ Rashford / Pogba/Bruno i would remind them of how horrible Rashford was from Feb onwards and he is allegedly going under the knife, how off form Bruno was as he was so overplayed, how half arsed and ineffective Martial was all season and that Pogba is refusing to sign a new contract and wants out..

Grealish is a fantastic player,a man utd player no doubt--i dont think many of our fans realise just how good this guy is, id hate to see him go to City-- IF we can work a deal with funds from selling Pogba/Martial and offer AXEL + CASH i reckon we'd get him, he would choose us over city too, no doubt.

If he does go to City i think he will flourish.

Despite all this i still think we will try to sign Rice with funds we raise from sales and that wouldnt be a bad thing.

Sancho is better than Grealish, so I don’t care. I either don’t care if they spend £150m on a player with loose ankles

So bottom line is we have the opportunity to reinforce more for less money than City, and that’s what really matters:)
Absolutely doesn’t matter if Sancho is slightly better than Grealish or not because City were a far better team than us last season. Even if our improvement will be marginally bigger, the gap will still be wide if they sign Kane and Grealish.

I’d love him at united but don’t see where he fits in?
On the left, he’d instantly be our best attacker and our football would improve countless levels, the guy is a generational talent he’s not had the stage for everyone to see it yet.

There’s a reason the best manager in the league wants him and the second best in Pep.

If he doesn’t go to United then for him it’s best to go to city, he’s given enough to Villa I hope he can make peace with his decision and show the world what he’s truly about.

If he signs for city I’ll revisit this next summer with the bashing I’m about to receive.

Potentially, but he's also used to playing for Villa where he's always had to pretty much has to do everything himself.

Nah, he'd be the third best left winger on here.

Is there a PR team for Jack Grealish paying posters here to hype him up? I could do with some extra cash.

“Generational Talent”.. I’ll do you guys one better and keep calling him - “GOAT”

Grealish’s PR team, private message me.
