I saw his MUTV interview and he gives me a very humble, professional and absolute winner personality. Also when asked to describe himself as a player in three words, he said work hard, ambitious and respectful

Still can't quite believe that we signed him. Can't recall the last time I was this impressed and eager about a signing United made.

Yes. Just watched the interview. His English is a little bit better than Bruno’s last year. Pretty fluid.
Sir Alex actually paid a visit to his mom’ house to talk to Raphael and family back in 2011.
Still can’t believe we have signed him. A lot of things improved in the club since Ole came and Varane in red shirt is a good indicator of this.

Yeah his English is excellent for someone which is not his first language. I was genuinely surprised he speaks it so well. He will have no problems communicating and integrating with his new teammates on and off the pitch

about class signing and certainly gives off the same type of vibes you get when anyone speaks to or about Mata

I'm still thinking he just wants to get a better contrat at Real.

It is that strange to me too :P

Surely Varane and Bruno have been our best signings post SAF?
Varane hasnt even played a minute yet!

Based on performances and their importance to the team over the last couple of years...Bruno and Maguire have proved to be excellent signings.

I can’t actually remember. Did Shaw ever play under Fergie? Don’t think he did. He’s been arguably more consistent than Maguire these last couple of years.

Shaw was signed by LVG.

Edit - Think actually just prior to him joining the club, but the same summer.

Cannot wait to see him play, especially in the CL.

Individually, I think De Gea will benefit the most from Varane. Communation in defense is key (Spanish). De Gea will up his level (again) with Varane in front of him.

Shaw has been consistent for the last 6 months. Long may it continue.

Shaw Maguire and Bruno have all been excellent signings.

Not just communication. Varane is ace in the air - he was the best header in La Liga on % aerial duels won. So whereas heading was always a weakness of Lindelof, it’s a big strength of Varane. So de Gea will need to catch less crosses

There’s a 3 part documentary on Amazon Prime from 2019 and the first episode is about his childhood and his rapid rise through the Lens youth system. He also tells the story of the Zidane telephone conversation that someone posted about earlier. He seems like a really humble, down to Earth guy who married his girlfriend from school but he’s definitely got a professional drive - showing off his trophy cabinet he talks about just needing the Euros “to complete the set”.

Varane, destin de champion

Worth a watch although some may be put off with the subtitles.

When he was 17 at Lens he had braids. Reminded me of a certain number 6.

He was signed in 2014 when Van Gaal was in charge.

Since the end of last year Luke Shaw has been outstanding.
Before that mainly due to injuries his performances were quite inconsistent imo.

The rumour that Jones refused to give up his number for him still blows my mind? Like who dies he think he is? He is no where near the team, way down the pecking order. It wouldn’t have happened if SAF was still at the club

The number thing is a load of shit.

If Man Utd wanted Varane to have number 4, Philip Jones would not have had a say in it.

Any idea when he would come into the team? I assume as he has just started training on Monday he would be on the bench at best vs Southampton on Sunday?

Is there going to be another training game to be played like we did vs Burnley yesterday? Varane could do with a warmup game or 2 before being thrown into the PL.

True but what if United didn't want to force Jones into switching and just politely asked if he wanted to switch and he declined?

It's most likely bullshit. Nobody else has reported it except Luckhurst. The Athletic just said that the number was already taken (along with 5) and Varane was happy to take 19. I find it hard to believe Ole would put a player in an awkward situation like that. I reckon as a club we learned our lesson from the Martial/Zlatan shit show over the number 9.

How do we expect him to catch less crosses? The guy is fecking glued to his line. It took 20 minutes for Maguire to lose his shit with him on Saturday for staying in his goal all the time. It’s a joke that he’s still in contention.

Do you think it works like that?

Man Utd choose the numbers, ask Anthony Martial.

And apparently Martial was unhappy and felt let down when they did that and Ole messaged him after Lukaku left asking if he wanted his number 9 shirt back.

United probably don't want a repeat of the same episode... even though it is only Jones.

Have to agree. He’s not a valuable enough player for United to give two shits about his opinion.

Boo hoo Martial.

Bring back 1 -11 I say. If you're a squad player you get a squad number >12

A surprising little fact.

Varane is actually younger than Maguire.

He is also younger than Pogba & Fred.

And Jesse Lingard is older than all of them.

Jones has been at the club 10 years. He might not be everybodys favourite player but he deserves some respect. Stealing his shirt number without his consent would be a very unprofessional approach, which clearly the club or Varane aren't willing to do.

I doubt Jones will be here next year anyway, so Varane can take the number then.

I thought you were on a wind up, but this is actually all true, including the Lingard bit!

Also, Fred and Maguire share a birthday.

Wow this has blown my mind

Must be because Varane has been around and playing at the top level since he was super young and the fact he's won everything.
