Early days, but if it's that good on the first outing, then we can only imagine when they have established chemistry and understanding for each other.

That partnership is title winning quality.

I enjoyed how calm and composed they were in their first game. Beside varane being outmuscled for the header that lead to De Gea world class save, they both played almost the perfect game. I have no doubt that we will be top or near the top of least goal conceded in all of Europe top league if these two play consistently.

First clean sheet together. I do believe they will be immense together.
They just suit each other perfectly. There will be dodgy games of course but from first looks, it is exactly what we were hoping to get from these 2.

Our Rio and Vidic partnership, hopefully they both remain injury-free and be consistent. This is one area that is lacking since SAF left.

Imo that was not being outmuscled but actually a fault. Saiss used both hands to push Varane down in order to out jump him and get to the ball. Maybe it's normal in the PL but it's definitely a fault in other leagues.

I thought they were excellent for the most part, composed. Varane was his usual mix of cool and class, I think he played a bit timid when he was on the ball but it's early days and he's getting settled in. They are very complementary, and that's not always easy to find two high-level CB that are that. Exciting times ahead.

Wolves away is always a hard fought and tough place to go so as far as a debut in a new league as well on top I think Varane was fantastic, having Fred in awful form and Pogba who isn’t at his best in that role in front of you only adds to how good Varane and Maguire had to be too.

When Varane covered for Maguire after Harry got megged was class... could never see Lindelof getting across like that.

Varane must feel at home with Maguire, that is pretty similar to his old partner.

For the first time since Vidic and Ferdinand, I'm confident we're going to have another world class partnership again.

Can't explain how exciting this is.

There was a calmness and confidence in the way these two were playing together.
Definitely opposite of when Bailly plays and many time Lindelof.

It was reassuring.

You could visibly see Maguire grow in confidence after that. Having that pace and athleticism mopping up behind him is an absolute game changer.

What I don’t quite get is why the left footer was at RCB and the right footer at LCB?

I was very impressed with Varane, and Maguire quietly had a good game as well. It's great that we have actually addressed a weak point in the starting XI so convincingly. They could easily be our CB partnership for the next 4-5 years.

To me it was small things like Varane towering to head clear set pieces towards the end which reminded me a bit of the Rio/Vidic era. I have a bit of time for Lindelof, but he just doesn't command the box in that way. Very positive start in a game where they got no help in the first half.

Best CB pairing we’ve had since Rio and Vidic. I forgot what it’s like to actually have two quality CB’s playing for your team.

We really have suffered in the last decade.

It's going to be a brilliant partnership, I'm actually almost more excited about that than I am about Ronaldo returning up front. A great centre back pairing is something we haven't had in a long time.

Varane was made for this club.

Finally since he has joined Maguire has a top defender to play alongside.

Early days but that partnership looks sorted.

Next: Centre Midfield

We’d have conceded at couple of goals first half if Lindelof or Bailly had been playing with Harry yesterday.
I tend to think it was more on Wolves' poor finishing than our great defending. DDG and AWB did alright, but it could easily have been 3-0 down by 1st half.

First time in many years I genuinely feel we have top class defensive partnership, since Rio Vidic.

On paper we have the best back 4 in the league and I thought they were all very good yesterday.

The problem is that if you leave the midfield exposed as we did you are still just playing with luck more than anything. I mean I couldn't fault any of the defence or De Gea, yet we could still easily have conceded 3-4 goals just due to how often they were being left exposed and outnumbered.

Have to say though Varane for a PL debut and considering it was a horrible game to be a centreback in, was pretty impressive. Looked like he'd be playing in those types of games for us for years

Attack wins games, defence wins titles.
The pair of them looked so composed and with Varane next to him, I think AWB had one of his best defensive games for a long time.
Look at the difference in DDG with a quality centre half pairing in front of him.

Very good early signs. Varane covering for Maguire was brilliant. What I also loved was each player took responsibility at different moments. Varane cleared two corners, followed by a towering header by Maguire at the best one. Maguire made some excellent blocks after Varane pushed the man inside. I like Lindelof but if Varane keeps up that level and this partnership evolves we will be tough to play against.,

Funny when you think about how we had 2 out of 3 players with a poor command of their area and aerially not the strongest playing in the box for us. No wonder we conceded so many set pieces.

Hopefully Maguire wises up and starts giving the ball to Varane. Maguire's done enough damage with his runs and shit balls out of play to Luke Shaw.

Both are top 5-6 centre backs in the world (I consider VVD, Ramos, Marquinhos and Dias to be the other 4), so definitely good times ahead. Varane is probably the best possible partner for Maguire because of his speed.

If AWB and De Gea up their levels this season, I don't think we'll concede many. Shaw is also just phenomenal, best in the world for me.
