And so he should. It was harsh. True but harsh. The last thing phil needed was that.

If Rio is genuinely surprised that Jones has erm....been injured, he's not the smartest cookie is he!?

The hate Jones is getting is not good, and it doesn’t help Rio coming out like that. Good on Rio to apologise.

tbf to Rio, the original article took things out of context and made what Rio said sound much worse than what it was. Don't think there was any need for apologies from the professional point of view, but I suppose having been teammates he was right to apologise anyway.

Wild to think he's only 29. Sad career riddled with injuries - seems like a top guy by all accounts.

Normally we know the injury situation of players. I guess Jones being injured has become so normal that it doesn't get reported anymore. I mean, I didn't even know he hadn't trained with Bruno yet nor which particular injury or injuries he's had since Bruno arrived. It's good that Rio apologised for the criticism since there's nothing Jones can physically do to move to another club anyway.

Rio didn't have to wait for Ole to call him out on this. Should have known he was talking s**t.

I have an incredible amount of time and sympathy for Jones. If you're talking about footballer mental health /Welbeing I'd really hope he's been doing okay.

What did Rio and others think was happening?
not defending Rio, but Ole said he and the club decided not to communicate about Jones' injury to protect Jones (probably not to draw any media attention toward Jones during his absence)

Rio you were being a dick, just own it. Jones has had terrible injury troubles, it's not like he did something stupid and irresponsible and missed 8 months.

Take note of how Keane always talks about Ferdinand. That’s all you need to know.

He really should go on loan though, even to the championship. A weaker, slower paced foreign league would be ideal for him though. There is no excuse for him staying here, If he is nearing fitness again he should be desperate to get regular football and enjoy the last few years of his career.

I wouldn’t say it comes across as a pure apology either… when he was talking, I was waiting for the “but”… and it came.

This is not any better.

I like Rio but all he had to do was accept he fecked up and moved on. Stop trying to justify your wannabe Michael Jordon personality about how he “wouldn’t even talk to Phil Jones” because he adds nothing to the squad.

Really, it’s entirely piss poor with Rio. He has connections at the club, he could have asked questions first before opening his mouth.

There are many PL players in worse situation than Jones, it's not like he is crippled by some serious injuries from what we can see, he is able to walk but not to play football on highest level very often. If he is then I feel sorry for him, but I am not sure he ever had serious injury while he was here.
Rashford was abused a lot last year, James was abused a lot this year, Smalling was abused and mocked all the time and hardly anyone is freling sorry for them. He still earns a lot, can take care of his family really well. It can be bit depressing, but majority of the people in the world are probably in worse situation than him.

If he is depressed because he is missing football, he should just try his luck elsewhere at lower level. If he is depressed he isn't playing for Manchester United then everyone should be depressed.

I actually find it very weird that people feel so sorry for Jones. Eriksen is better player than him and probably bigger professional, and look at what happened to him, he is lucky to be alive and hardly anyone is mentioning it. Jones isn't playing any serious football for years and he is earning more than 99% footballers or people around. He is actually very lucky boy Sir Alex put that much faith into him. Wilshere was more talented and no one wants him at the moment, Jones still has what, 2 years on his contract?

From career point of view I am sure majority of caf would probably swap with him.

Rio's the type of guy to apologise and then go on ad-nauseam about how he's a big guy for apologising.

It's not that, Amar. Injuries have a way of causing depression. One day you are fit and able and then next you're not. When you are hit by a string of injuries then it gets even worse.

People are acting so weird about Rio. I don't understand this display of dislike towards him that I see regularly on the Caf.

don't think there is one ex-United player that is in the media that is generally liked by the caf.

Yeah there's a section of United fans on here that have a strange dislike of him.

It's very odd considering he was a world class player who helped bring great success to the club and club legend who is still a genuine fan of the club himself.

I think the apology probably should've gone further than that. Didn’t he say he was a waste of time? That's harsh if true.

I think the issue here is that he came out saying he wouldn´t even waste energy talking to Jones if they shared the same dressing room, which made him look a bit like a prick. I don´t find the reaction in here weird at all. Before this, I´ve had no issues with Rio whatsoever, and I can´t remember seeing much negative about him from others either, so I´m not sure what you´re on about. A club legend he is.
