Not surprising, I don't expect us to win a trophy this season.

I'm gutted. And pissed off. :(

I love seeing us win trophies. Winning the League Cup, FA Cup, Europa League are still something to celebrate in my book - and they're the three best things that have happened since Fergie retired. I enjoyed them a lot more than finishing top 4 in trophyless years.

I'm absolutely gutted we lost. The fact we lost after resting key players who might well have been the difference to winning makes it even more frustrating and annoying for me. The fact there'll be plenty of United fans happy that we lost and that we're out of the competition just adds to that frustration as it's the kind of attitude that allows managers to carry on throwing cups because they know they're only judged on league position by fans and media nowadays not cup successes. Crazy. :houllier:

I may be wrong here, but I don't think it's in the rules, rather good mannered. Similar to giving the ball back when played out for an injured player.
Dropped balls

Contested dropped balls are a thing of the past.

If play is stopped outside the penalty area and a dropped ball required, it will now be dropped for a player from the team that last touched it, where the last touch happened.

All other players must be at least four metres away.

If play is stopped inside the penalty area, the ball will be dropped for the goalkeeper.

If the ball touches the referee or another match official and goes into the goal, or results in a change of possession or a promising attack, a dropped ball will be awarded.

And won 9-0 on another night. Every result is possible when you're making things up
Did you miss the gilt edged chances West Ham squandered? Hitting the post, Noble missing a 1v1, Bowen skinning Lindelof for fun and creating chances off the break at will? Maybe it was just me making shit up

Decent enough game. Greenwood looked great, Martial looked awful. Glad we won the league game and lost this one - better than the other way round.

Why are people in the matchday thread upset? City will win this trophy anyway, it’s better not to play a lot of needless games and get knocked out early rather than in the semifinals:wenger:
Wow! I think you rather stop writing anything on here because if u cannot appreciate the cups, you really don't know what winning is!

Where the grass is greener.
Gutted, annoyed, pained at a trophy opportunity spunked away in September.

I actually think the effort was there for the most part, but the fact Martial still has fanboys is baffling. His time is up, has been for ages.

What a poor performance from Martial. Looked okay till the final third but just nothing from the striker. Ronaldo and Cavani being at the club just shows how much he needs to do to get in the side.

With Cavani today we win that game.
Where is Cavani?

Thank you, seems I was living in the past and in the wrong here

Still have pictures of Rooney going all axe murder over a dropped ball some years ago in my mind

On a good point VDB was impressive and showed signs of being able to play as a modern day number 6, intercepted and read play, also tackled but was good with his forward balls.

Sancho getting into his flow, only a matter of games until he gets his first assist and goal and moves on from their.

Lingard was shooting too much.

Some of the replies here would have you thinking we are in a trophy laden period. There were way more negatives to that result and performance than positives. This team tonight need to be pushing the 11 in front of them. Can't believe some of the delusional replies to this result. Laughable.

Because there is a blind following for Ole by a large proportion of fans. Had the easiest of runs in the league so far. Southampton, Wolves and Young Boys all tore us apart away from home. Even against Leeds and Newcastle we let both sides back into the game. We won’t win anything with Ole in charge. His sole tactic is individual brilliance. He can’t rotate properly because then his moment of magic players can’t bail him out.
Josep, I'm going to risk a mod warning for this so please bear with me:

Please, for the love of god, shut up with this nonsense.

Oh my god! It's the end of days, we're out of the carabao cup.
I shall be writing a strongly worded letter to the Glazers henceforth demanding the sackings of the entire coaching staff.
I've half a mind to hack off at least two of my own fingers and post them with aforementioned letter.

Another thing, with twats like Peter Crouch et al, spouting off about the number of penalties we get, are we now banned from being awarded a penalty this season? Was not Lingard shirt being pulled to prevent him from shooting? Is that not a penalty? I could swear if I was so inclined!

People saying they are not too bothered about going out of the league cup need to realise that this is the easiest trophy to win, that was our first game in the competition. Ole yet again shows no signs of a winning mentality and stumbles again in an attempt at winning any silverware.
Will they be calling for Oles head if we are again trophyless come the end of the season.
No if he gets out of the CL group and gets a few points more than he did last season that will be enough for him to stay.

Was thinking about all the quality finishers we didn't start with. Ronaldo, Cavani, Rashford and Greenwood although the latter came on and looked the best player on the pitch. It was probably a bit naive from Ole to play that many second stringers with so little game time under their belt this season.

What has happened to Martial.. Used to be our most exciting player, what a shame.

If Cavani was available we'd win that. Mixed feelings on that game overall. On one hand, we played well. Dalot and VdB gave good accounts for themselves, Sancho seemed livelier. Got denied yet another penalty by another incompetent ref who can't be bothered to add time when he himself wastes it. On the other hand, we got knocked out of a cup, a small cup, but still a cup. That's always gut wrenching.

But we did learn some things tonight-Martial knows he has no future here and is playing like it. Lindelof and Henderson are great second choice players. VdB is a better option than Fred in his current form. Dalot will make us weaker defensively but might have enough in the offensive area to offset that against teams that sit back. Elanga has afterburners in his boots.

All in all, we win against Villa and I can forget this match.

Bit more squad rest for the league cup nights now which is good. No point to this cup really; Just adds to fixture congestion. No one would shed a tear at all if the competition was binned.

Very disappointing result. this competition is a chance for silverware. With an extremely competitive league and champions league i dont think its to be sniffed at like the old days.

Think West ham better positioned to make 10 changes as they play one simple way and every player in the squad will be trained to slot into a certain position in the system. The early goal helped them in that aspect i thought.

Thought it highlighted a few things - the whole of our back tonight are pretty dismal. I hope we avoid any bad injuries this season to our first choice back 4. Mata and Matic past it. VDB was more positive but still looks low on confidence. Lingard reverted to type. Just cannot start a game. Bench player at best. Martial absent. Pretty poor all over

Thought we were the better side apart from the first ten minutes, should have had a penalty and probably would have won the game had it been given.

It’s probably better we have this competition off our schedule in the long run.

Next round of league cup is scheduled for Oct 26/27.

We play Atlanta at home on the 20th, Liverpool home on the 24th, and Spurs away on the 30th.

No thanks!

Who cares? Once we settled down our second team dominated a Premier League side, we just couldn't score. The performance is more important than the result and now we don't have those weekday distractions to worry about.

VDB, Sancho, Dalot and Lindelof looked good. Martial was awful, and Lingard was his usual self.

I want us to win every single trophy we take part in. Thats how I've always grown up thinking, I don't get people happy that we've gone out of this competition so early and without scoring a single goal.

City, Chelsea, Lester, Arsenal, Liverpool, Spurs all do their jobs. We fail. Mickey Mouse cup or not, this is not acceptable. These up and downs so early already don’t contribute to a positive vibe within the team, we will never be able to start a run

Sucks to lose as there were some good performances tonight. Matic, Bailly, Dalot and Van de Beek were quite good, Elanga and Greenwood looked sharp off the bench and a couple of nice saves from Henderson.

That was the last 10 minutes when we literally played a back 2. CONTEXT.
The same applies. Moments in football can win games, it's not always the story of the full 90 minutes. In any case we were never a real threat to West Ham, at home. They were more comfortable in possession.

I'm not basing my opinion of Ole on carabao cup. If we finish 4th he stays. Football i shit though, won't be silent about it.
