If you were in that situation (either as the victim or the witnesses), how would you know the arrest was legit?
There is no way to know.

Best thing should be to asume every arrest might not be legit, and just start filming with your phone, just in case (letting the police officer know he is being filmed).

That should make him think twice about what's gonna happen next (in case it is actually an ilegal arrest).

People should be looking for each other.

Nonchalantly scoring the winner...
There's no way to know. This is why you start recording them. If they see someone getting it on camera maybe it will deter them.
Do officers wear body cams over there?

Agree with both of these. Sadly it should be standard practice and if he’d been knowingly filmed Sarah would still be alive.

People should be encouraged to peacefully record any and all Police activity they see - it’d quite obviously improve Policing and in time help to rebuild bonds that’ve been damaged.

Yes I can hear you Clem Fandango!
The sentencing hearing has really affected me more than I thought it would. The impact statements, and details of what Couzens did to the body, are horrific.

The more I consider everything the more this has to be a full life term. The police have a core duty to protect life, always quoted before investigating crime and bringing offenders to justice. This clearly has undermined trust in the police which could have dire consequences.

If the judge doesn't issue a whole life term I'd want the Attorney General to refer it as an unduly lenient sentence.

Horrible situation Sarah was in, can't imagine what she went through, poor woman.

This guy is a sick cnut, people like him don't deserve a second chance and deserves to suffer for the rest of his days, throw the cnut in with general and throw away the key.

I agree, it is very affecting. Knowing now that he specifically used his position to deceive her into going with him makes things even worse. I can't think how terrifying her final hours must have been and how that must haunt her family.

I hope it will be a whole life term.

If there's any small comfort from this story it's that they at least appear to have caught him after his first kill, as it's pretty clear he would have gone on to kill more women if they hadn't.

I hope they put him under the jail, hope he has fun being an ex copper in prison. Utter scum.
More than likely he's put in high risk lockup meaning no one has access to him. Would be grand if a few of the locals could get access to a scumbag like him.

With regard to people witnessing her being arrested I don't think there would be anything anyone would really do under normal circumstances. He must have arrested her under some false pretence that she had maybe been mistaken for someone else or whatever disgusting lie he told to her.

Real sad.

The details of the crime are sickening. OAN it pissed me off when that ex met officer on Sky news said something along the lines of “Wayne Couzens is not a police officer. The other police officers don’t view him as one he doesn’t share the same values of them, he is a dangerous individual.” No, he is exactly like the rest of them- corrupt bastards who harass innocent people and abuse their powers to do so.

Quite convenient that they caught the only bad police officer in the met then. Guess we can all sleep safe and sound at night again.

That's a disusting statement really. Would also be interested to know how he knew to wipe his phone half an hour before they arrived at his house to question him.

Or how he had previously got away with allegations of public indecent exposure

Yeah that statement was very ill advised. Doesn’t matter whether you or your colleagues see him as a police officer or not. He was one and used his power to kidnap, rape and murder a young woman. That his nickname was the rapist and he had previous for indecent exposure should have set some alarm bells ringing but seemingly not.

Thought this was interesting this morning. There’s lots to be done.

Don't agree with the part in bold. Generalizing like this doesn't help anyone. It's the same as saying "he is a man and is like the rest of them...".

Nobody of sane mind could possibly view Couzens as anything other than pure evil scum.

However, to compare 160,000 police officers as being ’exactly’ like him is easily the most shittiest, ill thought statement I’ve read on here in a very long while.

Obviously this is an exceptionally heinous crime but it stems from an abuse of power, something institutionally ingrained into the MET force.

It's a bit like when fans of a club do something bad and other fans say "those idiots aren't real fans". No, they are, that's the problem. You have to accept that they actually are real fans of the same team you are, accept that they make the rest of you look bad and accept some responsibility in doing something about it by calling out that behaviour (or lesser forms of it) when you see it among yourselves. Just saying "they're not really one of us" when they do something bad makes it sound like you're washing your hands of responsibility and distancing yourself from the problem.

In this case the better line to take would be "Yes, he was a police officer and he abused that position. It's our responsibility to do better to make sure there's no place in the force for people like Couzens or the attitudes that allow people like Couzens to pass unnoticed." How much they can actually do is another matter, but the tone should be "we will learn from this".

If the tone is not followed by remedying actions, then it's just performative. And yeah tone and performance matters, but in the grand scheme of things it matters very little.

She's completely right and it's an uncomfortable truth people don't want to deal with.

Vast majority of POC will tell you the same

The OP labelled all Police Officers as "...corrupt bastards who harass innocent people and abuse their powers to do so."

There are currently about 135k police officer ranks in the UK. Are you implying that each and every one of them are "exactly like him"?

Its what he deserves, its a pity the death penalty isn't an option as the ground is the best place for him.

To imagine this is his first serious crime is also very naive though, imo.

To graduate from indecent exposure to a crime as surreally heinous as this is very unlikely and I’m very surprised there hasn’t been more talk of what the possibilities might be of his previous. Given his age and position of authority it’s almost impossible to consider there aren’t other things out there.

It’s good that he has received whole life order, and hopefully that goes some small way to beginning to rebuild public trust, but there’s a lot of work to be done and many questions left unanswered regarding this case imo.

Where does she imply each and every one of them are exactly like him? Her statement doesn't imply a specific amount.
