League titles matter but Europe carries a greater weight. Jorginho will win it if Messi doesn’t imo.
I dont understand why people keep talking about Jorginho, its Lewandowski or Messi, nobody else can win it.

Ballon D'or list should not be more than max 10 players ..It devalues the prize.
including players like foden..,mount . mahrez..azpilicueta..barella..kjaer..martinez..moreno..pedri..to me is senseless and rediculous.
some of them are not even top players from their club let alone the league.

The reason why he has a great shout is because the he scores well in the areas that have about the biggest weight - champions league victory and country tournament (euros) judging by previous awards. However I think his individual performances is way too low to justify that placement.

Heck he is not the best midfielder in Chelsea and he is not even the best midfielder In Italy (let that sink, I said he is not the best midfielder let alone the best player in both teams). And yes Lewa will be among the finalists. I’d say Messi, Jorginho and Lewa. My guess of course.

It's like league performances don't matter, only your performance in (European) cup finals count which is why it'll come down to Mount against Jorginho
Messi is the heavy favorite based on the Vegas odds

Donnarumma is the most overrated goalkeeper in recent memory. He's young with great potential, but he's got a blunder in him and I'm not sure that is something that can be coached.

These ‘short’lists are a joke. Why bother having so many that aren’t even near the top. I say 3 to 5 max.
Personally I hope and think Lewa wins this as I think it should go to the best individual player. But as many have said above winning CL and International tournaments seems to be heavily weighted.

Lewandowski should win the Ballon D'or but he'll get robbed again.
International competitions and the CL are the most important factors in the Ballon d'Or. He performed in none of those (for various reasons). It'll be far from a robery if he doesn't get it.

Messi, think its obvious that he was hard carrying Barca for quite some time.

End of an era.

I think top 3 would be: (in no particular order)

Lewandowski - by far the best goalscorer throughout 2021, won league title and broke Muller's BL record, but hasn't won anything major
Messi - great performer for Barca in 2021, won Copa for Argentina as best player, but has been in poor form so far at PSG
Jorginho - key player in winning CL and Euro, also won UEFA player of the year, which I assume would increase his odds of winning Ballon D'or too? But wasn't particularly best player of any competition

Voted the best city in the world
The inclusion of Mount alone is laughable.
I can’t see the bottom of the list in the OP tweet but from another source I’m sure Sterling was also included? Which I find laughable. Could barely get into City’s best XI last season. Struggled for form/goals. Scored a few tap ins at the euros and viola.

You can say that about any keeper

I just don't want Messi to win it. Is that bad? Then I would like to see Ole take off his average manager suit, put on his top ones, and Ronnie to tie it with Messi.

It still bothers me that a lot of media are still talking about the fact that what Kjaer was heroic and might have saved Eriksen's life when in fact, anyone with a decent medical background knows his actions were totally useless...
I wish that we'd have used this unfortunate event to inform people instead of trying to buid a "hero" storytelling based on a lie.

He scored 3 goals in 3 games for Poland in the Euros and scored 5 goals in 6 games for Bayern in the CL before he got injured, how is that ‘not performing’?

Nobody cares about what players do in the group stage, too bad if he was injured but the fact is, 5 CL goals is hardly impressive regardless of the reason. Poland was eliminated at the group stage of the Euro with 0 win. Bayern lost in the quarter finals and Lewa wasn't on the pitch, are you discovering the way the Ballon d'or works?
2018 : Modric, WC final
2016 : Ronaldo, European champion
2014 : Messi WC final
2012 is the exception of the decade with Messi winning after only a CL semi final. You know how many goals Messi scored in 2012? 91 in 69 games, along with 22 assists, something that was never done in the history of football. And even with such a display, some people thought he didn't deserve it because he didn't reach any final or win any title. Lewa scored 48 goals in 20/21 so.... Messi was in a different universe.

To be fair there’s still few months to go, he could end up with 65 goals or something.

It will be a farce if anybody other than Lewandowski wins it.

For me, he’s been the best player/striker in the world for about 2 years now. He shd get credit for last year as well since they cancelled it.

Some of the nominees in the list are a joke tbh.

When Messi won the Copa I thought he'd win it as they give trophies especially on the international level the biggest importance but given the general sentiment right now I think Lewandowski will win it.

It should be Messi or Lewandowski. Nobody else is in the same stratosphere. Given the Copa win in Brazil, I think Messi has a great chance.

Jorginho vital cog in winning cl and euro. Nobody will come close to his achievement past season. .European Player of the season won by him and rightly so. Will win balloon d'or too in my opinion.

Mount had a better season than a lot on the list, to be fair. The list itself is a bit silly when they make it so long that so many random players get in. Just publish a top 3 and pick the winner.

I gave the stats for the full 20/21 season since I didn't have the 21 calendar year, the numbers might be a little different but it'll be in the same ballpark.

For those who don't know, here are the voting rules that will probably prevent Lewandoski from having it :
  1. Individual and collective performances (winners) during the year.
  2. Player class (talent and fair play).
  3. Overall judgment of the player's career.
Considering it was a Euro/COPA year, i just don't see how Lewa, who won 0 game with Poland and didn't play after the top 16 in the CL could get it. You'd need Messi 2012 performances to overcome that lack of team performance.
The only thing that could help him is if the voters are biased because of the COVID season.

People underestimate how clueless some ballon d'or journalists are. I checked the names of the ones allowed to vote a few years back, some of them aren't even football journalists, they cover all kind of sports, you're not gonna have me believe they have enough freetime to watch Top 5 league+CL+NT competitions as well as other sports such as Rugby,Cricket,Boxing and so on.

Lewandowski's Bundesliga title is worth nothing as it's pretty much a given when you play for Bayern.

If he gets it then it would be off breaking Muller's record but then again, I haven't seen that much media noise about it either.

Messi is the clear favorite, too popular, just won his first NT trophy and that made a LOT of noise.

 No, Copa America performance seals it for Messi. Lewa deserved it in 2020 but not this year

Messi and Ronaldo didn't have to perform in any of these in 2010 and 2013 when they won the Balon

It was a different voting system back then and Ronaldo scored 12 goals to reach the semi finals in the CL in 2013, not 5. With today's vote count, Ribery would get the ballon d'or.
On top of that, there was no international competition in 2013 so obviously it couldn't be taken into account. He did qualify Portugal for the WC with 3 goals against Sweden though.

Personally i think theres no question. Both on international and club football, the best individual performer has been Messi. I know it may be boring but he's still the best.
