Our problem under Ole has been finishing 2nd/3rd and not winning anything in his 3 years and people are really open to Wenger whos main problem in his final 13 years at Arsenal was never getting beyond 4th/3rd/2nd and long trophyless spells. Some of you lot really talk shite.

Galtier is a good defensive coach, he turned ASSE, Lille and now Nice into solid defensive teams regardless of talent. But I haven't seen him do anything else and I don't think that he is suitable for any team that is supposed to manage a top club. Though in the 90s he could have been one of the top Serie A managers.
Thanks mate.

And then there is you who compares a broken Arsenal with one of the high spending clubs. Well, context matters but for someone it doesn't.

Just out of interest- say that the glazers decided to keep Ole until the end of the season and sacked him at the end of it -

Which managers could possibly available at the end of the season that are not available now?

Ie who could potentially lose their job? For example Pochettino at PSG.

The team is soft in the centre of midfield without McTominay and Fred but lacks quality on the ball with McTominay and Fred.

That’s our issue. It’s not a cop out you just don’t wish to progress the conversation or are incapable of doing so.
I agree about the midfield. It is our no.1 problem. Far more serious and urgent than the manager. As you’ve been saying, a new manager will not win the league with this squad.

After the recent performances and results, I don’t feel confident that Ole will survive long enough to see the benefit of fresh blood in CM. I feel it is very possible that results will be too bad for too long and he’ll get the bullet. It would be a shame as he’s done well in so many ways but sometimes managers hit a trough they can’t get out of.

Everyone on here slagging Ole are ignoring context. He took over United in utter shambles under Mouriniho and has actually managed not to sign one flop after another, brought through young players and got United finishing back to back in the top 3 for the first time since Ferguson.

Does that mean he’s the man to take us forward? No, especially with recent performances. But just binning him a few games into a new season where, despite some complete shite, there have been some promising results (for example we failed to score 5 goals in 5 years following Ferguson’s retirement and we have already done it this season) and not just binning him, but binning him for Wenger who had many of the same problems we are having in terms of progress, is talking shite I’m afraid.

It certainly isn’t an opinion where “context matters” is it?

A manager similar to him or himself exactly ?
Actually both. I don't think that he is going to entertain a move from Nice but if we pretend that he would. Do you think that he can be successful when he has to deal with top players and more attacking talents?

If it's him, very hard to predict as I have no idea if he speaks the language or not as it's a vital for a manager.
However a manager like him would do us good because you build a successful team from the back for me. Whether it's by pressing as a team or improving each individual, a better defensive cohesion is a priority.
The attacking talent is there to create and score chances

Pochettino, Koeman, maybe Jesse Marsch, Steve Bruce, maybe Allegri (too early to tell), and Nuno. Zidane and Conte would’ve probably taken a job somewhere by then, and it would still be early for Luis Enrique (I don’t think he’d leave before the World Cup).

I feel like if we wait till the summer, we will end up with Potter or someone similar (ie a British manager who overachieved at a lower ranked club).

I can see the logic and can't disagree. My worry with managers like Galtier or even Deschamps is that while they are good at what they do, they are also easily criticized and put under pressure from the outside, so unless you overachieve you are always on the hot seat. The current exception being Simeone who managed to seduce Atletico in a way that we rarely see.

So some of options available are the same as 6 months ago when Spurs were looking for a manager, like Conte, Ten Hag, Potter. There's Zidane as well. I'd say those are solid options, we can't expect someone as good as Pep and Klopp, there's probably no one at that level in football atm, but whoever we get hopefully it's a quality manager that'll get best of our squad.

@kouroux @Lash

Galtier isn't an option anyway but do you guys think that he could bring his defensive tactical nous to a club like United, rely on fast breaks and attackers individual talent? Would it work?
For me, I think he could. He's not a fashionable choice, because of the style he plays, but there's no denying he improves teams everywhere he's been. He's also managed some extremely talented players - Payet, Matuidi, PEA at Saint-etienne for example. So I think he can manage personalities.

The real question for me at the moment, can he organise our team to press cohesively, which is integral to his game. I think his pressing style is more likely to work with our players, but it's hard to tell.

Imagine if they go for Southgate. Ole outers will have to take that one on the chin.

Tricky one because you are crying out for a better tactical system but you also have a group of players used to playing their own games rather than inside a more structured team concept.

Conte is probably the only manager who both has the tactical nous and the stature to tell the likes of Ronaldo, Bruno, Pogba, and Rashford that they either play within the team’s tactical concept or sit on the bench.

They might have all the tactical brains in the world but I really doubt the likes of Potter or Ten Hag are up to managing this group of players.

He didn't have the squad for anything more than that. Some context is necessary. At United he'd be managing a team full of world-class talent.

(Not saying I'd necessarily want Wenger but your take is too simplified).

Yes and don't forget about Newcastle who is also going to go for the best manager available and they have more money than us.

Haha...our problem under Ole is that we only ever look like a half decent football team out of possession and playing on the counter. Forget trophies. As a Utd fan...do you want to win a Champions league getting battered and played off the park by PSG and relying on a bizarre VAR Penalty in the dying seconds?

I’m all for riding our luck once or twice a season but for god sake...we have been awful to watch for years and years. Finally we have a squad good enough to go toe to toe with the best again....I don’t want to just be a counterattacking side in big games anymore...I want to be proud of how we PLAY not of how we get results.

The next manager will be the wrong manager. I somehow feel like this board is incapable of picking a good manager.
Outside of obvious candidates like Conte, Klopp or Guardiola, it's difficult to pick managers for pretty much every clubs. Particularly when you are a club that wants to compete seriously in the CL but don't have a Ballon d'Or contender in your team.

Then more I think about this the more I feel that Conte is the only short term option. I like the way Ten Hag and Potter try to play but they do not have the stature as you say of managing a bunch of prima donnas.

Depends what you class an “Ole outer”

If you mean the types hoping/not caring if we lose just to try to get a new manager, then fair enough.

I don’t think there’s anything wrong with people who have supported the guy, are thankful for what he’s done but think he’s taken the team as far as he can now

I'd say let's go for Mancini. He knows the EPL well, he plays a very balanced style of tactics and he uses the 4-3-3, 4-5-1 and 4-2-3-1 tactics on which this squad is built upon. Mancini tend to build sides who are very pragmatic without sacrificing too much on creativity. My only issue with Mancini is that he likes discipline and he's obsessed with training. That tend not to go well with British and Irish talent who love to be 'man managed'. In fact at City he had issues with Hart, Johnson, Bridge and Bellamy. He also tend to have a certain distaste towards injury prone players as well which can be a problem with us considered that we're a bit obsessed with those kind of people.

So no different to now then?
Actually no different to the last 10 years.
Seriously I would just be happy with a league title.
CL has for some reason always been extremely difficult to win for us, even with our best teams.

We all love United
How about Unai Emery? I know he’s an Arsenal ‘reject’ but he’s a proven manager/tactician and his Villarreal teams have been very good and hard to beat. They should even have beaten us three weeks ago in the CL game

Antonio Conte would mean all the talk about cultural reset was just bullshit.
His record with young players is a disgrace.

Conte basically needs his team's to not be in Europe so he can play high intensity football, playing the same eleven week in week out, focusing on the league.
I’m fine with that.

I don’t actually want Conte but given the chance of a league title and nothing in Europe versus nothing at all I‘d take a league title.
