Some media outlets reporting he has agreed a £150m deal to be ambassador for the Qatar 2022 World Cup. Good for him, but feck me that's a lot of money for basically just lending his face and making a few appearances. Completely mental.

A sell-out. Was a childhood hero. But I see him as a complete oxymoron with no principles other than money and posing.

Same here. Idolised him as a teenager.

Now he seems to be nothing more than a PR exercise.

That's disappointing, it's not like he needed the money

I hope all the players that go over and play in the Qatar World Cup, and any presenters, pundits covering it, get labelled as sell-outs, hypocrites etc.

People who says he is a money chaser, its 150mil man.
He’s almost a billionaire. There comes a thing called solid principles and values. I know many instances where businesses turned down huge amount of money to stayed aligned with their core values.

My company for example, doesn’t partner with unethical companies regardless of whether 150 million or not.

This is the difference between individuals and organisations that are corrupt and those stick to values.

150m, didn't the Saudis buy Newcastle for 300m? He could have gotten more.

I would never do it... Bullshit 150m is so much money everyone would have a hard time turning it down hell Bill Gates would think twice.

But Becks is becoming a parody with the fake hair and fake teeth, he really is a bit like these over repaired and stretched Hollywood wives.

It's a bit rich when you have the Daily Mail slagging him for taking money from homophobes and misogynists, given the bile they spew out.

On the plus side, he could do a lot of good using a fraction of that money.

Maybe he needs money..
Thing is I doubt he even does it for the money, he strikes me as being more interested in the status (the money naturally follows).

150m though makes you wonder, why so much? Did he turn down 20, 40, 60, 100m? Why would he have turned that down? It's an absurd amount compared to the relatively little amount of time and effort he would put in. Do these guys have so much money that they just randomly picked the 150m out of thin air and offered that straight away? Or Is it so much because people are reluctant to be associated with them? Certainly he has a team of advisors who would make him well aware of the potential backlash and some awkward questions he will have to answer.

Sure I read 15m in another thread and thought that's a lot for endorsement of one man. 150m, you've got to be kidding.

That kind of figure highlights sportwashing desperation

If Becks was alive in 1936 he'd happily be an ambassador for the Olympics in Nazi Germany.

Money talks. He has great PR and his public image is unrivalled, but he's a ruthless guy behind all that. Should he turn it down? Yes. Would 99% of people? No.

Do you not realise that you're simply affirming the accusation with these comments
Yeah, but without actually having to spell it out, I was saying that few people would stick to their morals when such vast sums are involved, so I think it's silly getting on our high horse because Beckham is doing what 99.9999999% would do.

We have a Government that sells weapons to human right's abusers but David Beckham promoting a World Cup is what makes headlines.

We're allowed to sell weapons to them and fund them but we're not allowed to like them.

True. Footballers wages are often easy targets for tabloids, but christ there are people that most of the population aren't aware of who have almost infinitely more wealth than Beckham, and most of them have been involved in some horrendous shit to get that level of wealth.

So many weird responses. Will Ronaldo and Messi refuse to play the WC then for moral reasons then? Their presence and that of every top player promotes the event which I'm sure wll involved want want be a success. What's wrong wrong Beacham doing it?

I’m also expecting the criticisers to not watch the WC. Off course they will

He showed his nasty side in the e-mail hacks. I'm not surprised by the slightest by this news.

He did have a spell at PSG so he's probably already had a PR lesson from Nasser. I don't blame him for taking the money, he's always chased money. I don't have a problem with that either because he always gave his all for udt.

So absurd that people think 99% would do this just because its a lot of money. First of all, he doesnt need any more money, and secondly there are plenty of people who value integrity over cash.

Who cares its 150m? Why would you want that kind of money anyway?

If he didn't, someone else less famous would get lesser money to do it. The WC is going to happen regardless, the players (including Messi Ronaldo etc) will play regardless and all the fans (including the ones here) will watch it too.

Bit shit nonetheless that he's doing it but it's an insane amount of money even for someone as rich as Beckham to put his face on something that's going to happen and have lots of big names put their faces on anyway. Wish he didn't, can understand why he did.

I love how self righteous everyone becomes when it's anything to do with the Middle East. Sure, they have done and do some terrible things. But let's not forget a lot of us here live in countries that were responsible for starting recent wars that were based on complete lies and responsible for the complete poverty, displacement of millions and the death of thousands including their own. Would you be as opposed to ambassadors of a US or England world cup?

What exactly is all that money for? In the year 2022 anyone around the world who even knows who Beckham is will likely already be tuning in to the World Cup.
