So, it seems like they would have already sacked Ole if the right manager was available.
Clearly, they don't want Conte. So, they decided to give Ole the chance and are relying on some sort of miracle. Ok whatever

BUT if he doesn't win the next 3 games, obviously they will have to sack him, cause nobody will allow the club to be 10th/14th after 11 games in EPL. Then the only option is Conte. And he would be far from ideal. He doesn't suit this group of players. 2 of Rashford/Greenwood/Sancho (if not all 3) will be on the bench. Plus he's a very difficult person to work with.

So, ideally Ole gets to top-4. Then in summer they can make a decision. There are only 2 right candidates for me considering Zidane doesn't want the job: it's either Ten Haag (it'll be great to bring VDS with him) or Poch (who will eventually leave this circus in PSG).

I can't make my mind. I'm almost ready to sacrifice yet another season and go with interim or even Ole untill the summer if we can't get our target earlier. We are a dead cert for that 4th place in the league with our squad, and we are not wining CL anyway, so we can call it another write-off and try to nail it on in the summer.
I was pro-Conte yesterday and I still admire him, but if our squad is not suitable for him, then what's the point.
Hate seeing our fans divided, thankfully everyone are aware now how inept Ole and that he must leave.
I think we might push for Poch in the summer and I'm ok with it.

Not had many people shout for Diego Simeone here. Been at Atletico for 10 years now, would it be that hard to tempt him away? I'm not 100% sure if he is the right guy or not but he is clearly worth a look.

Here's a couple of articles that may or may not be bullshit, but point to him actually wanting to come at some stage in the past.

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/f...one-probably-never-manage-Premier-League.html

His tactics are likened somewhat to Ferguson's 2008 side in this video also if anyone is interested.

I'd genuinely prefer Simeone to Conte if I'm being honest. Both play a pretty negative brand of football, but Simeone at least seems to bring longevity (10 years at Athetico like you say) and has more of a European pedigree. On a personal level I find his brand of shithousery more entertaining than Conte's......though Beckham may never visit OT again

Neither are in my top 3 preferred candidates but of the two I'd definitely take the mad crotch-grabbing Argentinian mentalist.

Trust me, Conte plays much better footbal than Simeone.
Simeone is anti-football at its finest.

I rate Potter highly and think he will manage England at some point in the future. For Man Utd at this present time though? Not sure.

I'd like Big Sam as caretaker until the end of the season, get that defensive organisation sorted out.
So not the young highly rated manager playing an attractive brand of football with his career ahead of him? Go for the footballing dinosaur big Sam with his pedigree for fighting relegation battle after relegation battle yeah?

Our fans have lost the plot

People will say he doesn’t play the right football but personally I value the mentality he has in that team and the unity they show. 10 years is a hell of a stint in the modern game and I admire that too. He’s probably one of the few managers that you could feel confident in competing with Klopp and Guardiola and we’re probably one of a few clubs that could tempt him.

Don't get why people are questioning Conte. We have many players he could use as wingbacks. But first and foremost Luke Shaw might need to shed 5kg before being close to the Utd first Team under Conte.
Nice try Jose!

He plays a similar formation but a different style. Potter's style is closer to Guardiola and he looks a interesting prospect.
Cheers. our material is far from suiting to Potter's system then. Thats a lot of millions wasted on Sancho, Amad, etc.

Rebuilding for either Potter or Conte seems to be a new 2-3 year project. Which if it fails, will require cleaning up like after Mourinho. Seems like a no brainer to not go for neither.

Offering Ajax a boatload of money to nab him and van der Sar from them to build a promising project with vast resources would be the most exciting prospect for the club to me but I know the club well enough that I don't ever see the Glazers even considering hiring a lesser known manager from a lesser league.

The same logic applies to Potter.

That being said, I wouldn't mind someone like Conte at all. I do believe that we could actually win things with him and this squad.

Ideally Zidane would've been my first choice but he seems to have his sights set on managing the French national team before he retires from the game for good.

It would not be the worst decision. Sign the dinosaur for this season, let him bring structure to that team and United's quality should then be enough to secure the fourth place. Take your time identifying theright manager to take the squad and do something with it in the summer.

This could still be Potter, but poaching a manager from another team mid season is quite difficult as he has to hit the ground running or will be part of a failed season. That bears a risk of burning him early.

I actually think the Glazers would be on board to offer them stock: Just give him a one-time grant of restricted stock that vests over 5 years - $50 million, $100 million or whatever, with or without performance-based clauses.
Im pretty sure the benefit of having a good manager at the helm would more than make up for the future dilution and the stock would rally. Also, it would be Class A non-voting stock.

In fact, it seems strange that we haven't done something like this before. In other industries, its the norm to reward management with stock. It's just not the "done" thing in football, but that's mostly because you need publicly traded stock to do it. Someone get Woody on the phone!

Edited.

Martinez, Southgate and Pochettino would all be part of the big "facepalm, we are idiots" list IMO.
I disagree with you on Poch. My belief in him has waned a little bit but what I saw from him at Spurs convinced me at the time that he was the one to go for. And I would still consider him the best option. The problem we have is that the 3 I would put above him are at our rivals.

Appoint Ten Haag or Potter. See if they can hack something in the remaining 9 months else sack em and go for Zidane or someone at start of next season.
Point being we can never be sure who will or won’t work. Let’s just stop trying to make the perfect decision and get one of these try and see.

Pochettino for me is barely above Ole and was horrendously overrated. He had a couple of good years that coincided with a few excellent players at the peak of their powers, and then has been nothing but awful football since. He's never won anything (barring finally winning the French cup with PSG), but he failed to even win the league with PSG which is horrendous. All those years with a very good squad at Spurs that led to nothing more than competing for top 4. Fluked their way to a CL final once, which they lost comfortably, in a year where they were horrendous as a group anyway. Finished 2nd once in a year where they weren't within arms reach of the eventual winners (managed by Conte...). Full team declined after that and Pochettino could do nothing to turn the tide.

Most overrated manager around IMO, though I don't think he's rated all that highly anymore anyway. He's been pretty shit as a whole since 2017.

Poch does not belong on that list.
See above post. He's a mediocre manager who has done nothing to suggest he is anything more than that. He had a couple of good years 5 years ago that coincided with a very good Spurs squad at their peaks - and then led to a collapse which he could do nothing to stop or change. Even during his good years and the overall period he was there - they were never more than top 4 contenders and ultimately his time there is finished with nothing but some top 4 stability for a time followed by dropping out of that too. The year they fluked their way to a CL final was a year in which they were genuinely woeful on the pitch across all competitions, but had the rub of the green in one competition to go on a run. Failed to win the league with PSG, they play really bad football compared to the talent at his disposal, etc etc. He's not a very good manager, and the one thing in common that all his teams have is that they are dirty and moody cnuts who lash out when the result doesn't go their way.

Why is it not more voices suggesting Graham Potter? I get that he might be a step from having the experience wished for and I can see that someone like Conte would have more resources to manage a superstar squad (but Mourinhos discipline didn’t really do it, did it?).

Potter is one of the most talented coaches out there, and his results in his three clubs this far has been close to amazing. He is a VERY talented tactician (known for both his ability to change systems serveral times during a game and a confident purposeful constructive football) and a very good man-to-man and team building coach - making players both dare and go the extra mile.

Except for Pogba, who is probable to leave anyway and hasnt worked under to so different coaches as Mourinho and OGS anyway, I cannot see that the player group should be to hard for him to handle anyways. He is good with youngsters and keeping players heads right, and someone like Ronaldo is experienced enough to understand how to act to benefit results.

Moreover, he would add in to the line of thinking that OGS except all his flaws has been crucial in establishing. No one is longing back for Fellaini times, are we? To go for Conte would be to make another identity u-turn = exposing that the club doesnt have any other culture than business, manifesting its contemporary self as nothing less than a bleek copy of Chelsea.

Anyhow, it might be a bit early for Potter, but if United doesnt get him Liverpool or City will the day its time for them to reinvent themselves. He is the biggest talent out there, and might be to good to miss.

A quite terrible take really. He wouldn't be my 1st choice but "barely above Ole"

Any positives about his career are taken as pure luck and any negatives are down to being a poor manager, how convenient.

"coincided with a few excellent players at the peak of their powers" - so does he not get any credit for promoting these players, signing them, coaching them, putting them in a tactical set up to get the best out of them? You only have to look at the state of our current team or Lampard's Chelsea to see it's not as simple as having a few good players.

4 consecutive top 4 finishes, CL final, highest points total is 86. How many billions have United spent post-Fergie and we've not even got near 86 points. With proper investment at a genuinely top club there's a good chance he'd have built a team that could go all the way. In a way Pochettino was a victim of his own success, this is Spurs we're talking about... We're talking about a manager being a failure because he only finished 2nd on 86 points.. With Spurs.. We're talking about a manager being a failure because he only reached a CL final and didn't win it... With Spurs.

Please don't even put that thought out there
Well I just have. And I would much prefer Southgate than Ole. Because apart from anything else, he knows how to build a team.
Don't expect it to be popular. But it is logical.

Pochettino had a good couple of years as I said. If he did anything positive since then, I'd be more inclined to not label it a fluke. Leicester won the title with Ranieri. He had a few great players that made that difference. Do we hire Ranieri now because of 1 fluke year? Pochettino has been around long enough at this point that finishing 2nd 5 years ago is irrelevant for me. It's the same as Mourinho finishing 2nd, or Ole. Who gives a feck. They didn't win the league and proceeded to rapidly decline from that point. There's loads of average coaches around that can get a big club at a top 4 competing level. Pochettino is nothing more than that. There's very few that can actually turn the team into a truly top team that competes for trophies - seriously.

You say a victim of his own success.... what fecking success? 2nd place 5 years ago? CL runner up in a year where they were horrible on the pitch in every other competition? Guess Di Matteo and Ranieri are great because of their wonder years where they actually won the things.

Ten Hag ain’t coming and we should be willing as a fanbase to wait for him in the summer. Get behind this Conte appointment. I’m fed up of the club trying to manipulate fans.

Next we will have fans walking round saying it’s okay we all know Ole is getting replaced by Ten Hag in the summer. Wake up.

Does the poll still contain old data from last year?

If so, what’s the point? Start a new one and get a proper feel for what fans want right now.

He feels like a natural successor for when Pep decides to leave. I would love to see us take the chance but sadly I just can't see it happening. Most likely it will be an already established name like Conte or Zidane.

This thread lacks the option of Kjetil Knutsen. He fits the mold of a new up and coming manager perfectly
