I thought the same. I’m of an age where I remember constantly nagging my mum for 10p so I could go and play Pac Man, Green Beret or Paperboy. Or even better, that old vector graphic sit down Star Wars game. Some of my all time faves are from that era. Completely limited in comparison to Gen 4 gaming but the impact they had on me was immense.

And the fact this poll only starts with Gen 4 when I had a wooden topped Atari 2600 playing Qbert and Frogger

Old b*stard status confirmed!

The massive 10ps!

It's funny because arcades were the absolute pinnacle and the versions we got on consoles were pale imitations best managed as the hardware could handle. Amazing nonetheless to even have a decent version (post commodore 64/Amstrad 464/Spectrum 128k era) of an arcade game you could boot up instantly and play in your home, though!

Just makes me laugh that it's not even a category despite being the cornerstone of the whole movement. Makes me old. :(

I better give a list instead:

Round 1 - Third Gen - NES, Master System, Atari 7800

1. Wonderboy 3 - Dragon's Trap - SMS
2. Super Mario Brothers 3 - NES
3. Zelda - NES
4. Mega Man 2 - NES
5. Castlevania 3 - NES / Fantasy Zone 2 - SMS

Gone for non ports of arcade games or downgrades of 16-bit titles as they pale into insignificance when compared to where they originate from. Think these were all masterful creations made from the ground up specifically for the generation they came out on. The top 2 are interchangeable, but Wonderboy 3 really was a unique adventure, essentially 5 games in one as the tasks for each character could be a game in its own right in those days. Super Mario Bros 3 will probably win the round, but I wonder how many people played both games - the former is somewhat of a hidden gem compared to the hype and world renowned SMB3.

I really considered arcades, I used to love then but I didn't think too many people would have played them in here.

If there's not enough people, it'd be a pointless exercise, I feel. Arcades had massive leaps in technology during their run that would be an interesting discussion its own right (from graphical leaps, to even the introduction of extra buttons over time - most early arcade games were 0 or 1 button, then came 2 buttons [such as jump and attack], then the 3-button era and so on), but it's very nuanced (one for oldies or true nerds) so understandable if avoided.

They were massive  ... and like treasure if it meant I could rush over and put it into Space Invaders, Ghosts and Goblins etc.

Some of those early machines we incredible and me and my mates used to go for days out in London in the early 90's just to go to the Trocadero Centre in Piccadilly where there was a multilevel Arcade that was like heaven to us lot at the time.

At one point they had Ridge Racer where you actually sat in a proper Mazda MX5 in front of a huge wraparound screen. That was incredible.

I smashed most of these! I was going to list some but I think they may be a little too obscure!

Body Blows!
Great memories from that game!

I think I spent a massive part of my childhood in Trocadero. Especially once they got in fighting games like Street Fighter 2... I was really good at that and used to hustle people. I would button mash against the computer, then some duped person would challenge me and I would kick the shit out of them.

I used to make 50p last me like 5 hours

Yeah, I just assumed everyone would have owned the NES consoles at some point.

But really, if you haven't played those games, then, well, it's pretty weird for me to imagine.
The idea of having a device dedicated just for gaming was outside of our financial possibilities in the early 90s. We had a PC for work stuff that I could use to play games when my parents weren't using it. So there are many NES/SNES classics that I basically never even heard of before the arrival of broadband internet.

Most kids around my age were the same. People had Gameboys and such, but Commodore 64 and then PC was far more popular than the 'main' Nintendo consoles.

Come on you game nerds! Alex Kidd only needs few more votes to stand a chance at making the final (and in turn, this whole process more engaging for the host)!

Can I make a request that the bonus round focus on Spectrum/C 64 and Amiga/Atari ST games - possible the two should be separate. This would be for all the old bastards like myself.

There was another great fighting game from that era called Barbarian. That was brill.
It's that one where a perfect shot chops off the head right? What a game

I would love to mate, Amiga was one of my favourites... But I think there'll only be one or two people voting!

If there's enough interest, I can add in one more round.

Let me know.

1. Megaman 2
2. Super Mario Bros 3
3. Double Dragon 2
4. McDonald Land / MC Kids - shameless rip-off of SMB, but probably the smoothest graphics of any of the NES platformers
5. Duck Tales

Worst game - Top Gun. Absolute crock of impossible shit.

Nooo. I didn't think this was allowed. Wasn't this a mod? I played this for absolute ages and it was absolutely beautiful.

So we all saw the IGN Greatest Games contest a while back and safe to say, most people thought the system was a bit of a joke and not really representative of the best games of all time. A few of us in that thread thought we should do our own. I'm not the biggest gamer in here but as no one else has stepped up, here I am!

Here's how it will work:

Each Monday, I will set up a new round for the contest.
Each round will represent a different generation of gaming.
We will be starting with the Third Generation as this is when gaming became mainstream. I doubt many of you would have voted for a game from Magnavix Odyssey or Mattel Intellivision so stop your whining now!

The generations are below (BOLDED IS THE CURRENT ROUND FOR THIS THREAD):

Round 1 - Third Gen - NES, Master System, Atari 7800
Round 2 - Fourth Gen - Mega Drive, Neo Geo, SNES
Round 3 - Fifth Gen - Saturn, PS1, N64
Round 4 - Sixth Gen - Dreamcast, PS2, GameCube, Xbox
Round 5 - Seventh Gen - Xbox 360, PS3, Wii
Round 6 - Eighth Gen - Wii U, PS4, Xbox One
Round 7 - Ninth Gen - Xbox Series X/S, PS5, Switch
Round 8 - Special Round 1 - PC Gaming
Round 9 - Special Round 2 - Handheld & Mobile Gaming
Round 10 - Bonus Round - (TBA)

For each round, please list your top 5 games for that generation in list view.
Please do this by Friday 11:59pm GMT
5th = 2 pts, 4th = 4 pts, 3rd = 6 pts, 2nd = 8 pts, 1st = 10 pts.
The top 2 games from each round will go through to the final round.
In the event of a tie, I will need to run a poll for 24hrs.
If you have voted, then changed your vote, please let me know, otherwise I may miss your vote by accident.
I will try to start each new round on the Monday after a vote round has finished.
At the opening post of each round, I will put in the results from the previous round and start the voting of the current round.
Once we have gone through the 10 rounds, I will make a FINAL Round thread where you all can vote for the final 20 nominees.
Then once that voting is done, I will post the top 20 in order from last to first and crown the overall winner.

I know this is probably not the BEST way but I doubt there is a BEST way to do this!

Remember, I have 2 kids, a full time job and in the middle of a house move so there may be times where I miss deadlines or post later than anticipated. Apologies in advance.

I hope this is fun and you guys enjoy it :D
Why no Atari 2600? Surely that was mainstream at the time?

And no computer games apart from PC? Are they not considered video games anymore? Spectrum / Commodore 64? Atari ST / Amiga???
