What's Cristiano ever done to Carlton Cole?

Been reading a lot of so-called experts of the game and they have come to the conclusion that the signing of CR7 is the reason why Ole is now unemployed, what are your thoughts on this.
Yeah it’s all his fault that Ole needed to improve our style of play and actually be successful. Ole needed to up his game and fell short of expectations as he wasn’t tactically very good.

BS in my opinion, we have seen the same crap football several times before Ronaldo joined. Ole was "unlucky" we hit one of his trade-mark low form periods at a bad time. We've had shit periods like this 3-4 times already since Ole joined.

Nope. We were very crap in games against Wolves and Southampton before he joined.

Any manager worth their salt would have made ronaldo work. Any manager worth their salt would have balls to instruct him to press if need be, or drop him if he refuse.

You gotta stand your gun as manager. And for what it's worth no, it's not because of ronaldo

It's very very odd. Frankly the amount of messages of sympathy for Ole are getting a bit out of hand. He had an extended period of grace and didn't achieve. Simple as that. Why does he need bubble wrap to move on? It's Ronaldo's fault now? Yikes

Wouldn't surprise me if this is all fabricated to keep the pressure off the Glazers and the news of Woodward staying on.

This is like the 4th time we've put together a run like this in Ole's 3 years. He did his best to sack himself at every opportunity he got. The only difference Ronaldo has made this season is we're not bottom of our CL group.

Ole is the one that kept picking a midfield that couldn't get CR7 the ball meanwhile VdB rotted on the bench. Donny did more in 15 minutes (before the red card) vs Watford than McFred have done all season. The mere fact that he has benched a guy who finished 13th in ballon d'Or voting 2 seasons ago is enough to get fired...

Ole just got to the point where he had to deliver a title challenge or he was out

we had plenty of other dodgy periods but he was given time because he hadn't built his squad

so nah, it was 100% Ole

also Ronaldo has played great since he got here

Just to play the devil's advocate, in the past 5 seasons, each of Ronaldo's clubs have had a change in manager (Zidane, Allegri, Sarri, Pirlo, Ole). Are the teams trying too hard to fit him in a playing style which just doesn't work any more?

Even if this is true, it's not what Ole did. Ole did not change his playstyle to fit Ronaldo in the slightest. We saw almost every time Ronaldo playing alongside 2 iverted wingers that only look to shoot & so Ronaldo kept dropping back and playing the playmaker. I'd struggle to say a false 9 role is suited to Ronaldo. Then look at what happened when he put on Donny to link with Sancho & Ronaldo in the 2nd half vs Watford, we finally started to create & DVB kept feeding Sancho who would go down the outside of the wing & look to pick out Ronaldo, rather than just head down shooting like Greenwood or Rashford. Ronaldo really could & should have scored a couple against Watford.

We got absolutely battered by Wolves before we signed Ronaldo, but somehow fluked a 1-0 win. It has nothing to do with Ronaldo.

People were expecting United to challenge this year. I knew this would spell the end for Ole as he was never going to be able to do that.
Ronaldo signing was not necessary imo but far from the reason Ole lost his job.

Of course it's not.

You don't need to be an expert to see the issues Ronaldo has brought. Anyone with some basic understanding of the modern game would. But surely it's not all his faults, Ole is for a big part too imo. For example his decision to play Ronaldo as a #9, and to play him 90' every matches despite his age. Both are obviously bad decisions imo.

Imo Ronaldo is one of the reasons top coaches would be reluctant to come to us. Ronaldo need a very good midfield and hard working, very hard working attacking players around to accommodate him. We don't have either. United has a very big fan base and also Ronaldo. If things don't go well the pressure would be huge, and might even ruin their whole reputation and career. So far only Poch seems interested and imo it's because he's currently is in a worse situation with Neymar, Messi, Mbappe etc. Our board is clueless and only cares for money. If I was one of them tbh I'd stay away from United for the moment.

Ronaldo + Manchester United is such an easy target to choose to build a story around.

Most followed on Social Media and the most hated/disliked ones.

In this "# of Views" based reporting/punditry age, no better way to get max views then to paint them both in negative, together!

I could say the signing of Champions League Varane added to that expectation.

We went from a team that was in the building stages to the final product that needed to challenge.

Ole got away with soo much because we were a team in the rebuild and once the rebuild is done then we would challenge. So the fans were patient with him.

The signings over the summer fast tracked the whole team building process by a season and Ole was not on par to match the big jump that was needed to challenge.

Even Gary was convinced that after our signings (replace Ronaldo with Kane) we should be winning the league.

So yes it’s Ronaldo’s fault for the sacking of Ole because he exposed Ole and he needed to deliver but he couldn’t.

Experts should know that Ole should've been sacked a long time ago, at least after the EL final.

Good points that are getting airbrushed.

If Liverpool, Chelsea and especially Leicester didn't shit the bed last season, we'd likely have had a new manager for months.

The rot has been there since last season. Ronaldo coming in just put a magnifying glass on United and we are expected to be title contender. Funniest shit I read here all the time is Ronaldo causing the problem. Ronaldo bailed Ole ass multiple times and he probably extended Ole shelf life for a bit. Like Juve got held back by Ronaldo huh ? They are 8th in Serie A now.

Solskjaer kept selecting a midfield partnership that was there to contain the opposition rather than impose, which was the one of the reasons the players lost faith in him.

Also we never showed the know how to press high in a coordinated manner in the 3 years Solskjaer was in charge. So how someone can blame Ronaldo beats me. The whole team dynamic was geared towards a reactive style of play with a midfield partnership of McFred. And as predicted, he lost his job because of it IMO.

I think that Ronaldo was wrong buy. And i also think that next manager will have problem with him in team.

But in Ole's case, Ronny in fact saved him from not being sacked earlier.

In the CL, we have score 8 goals. 5 of them by Ronaldo. And we have shipped 7 of the feckers. I fail to see how Ronaldo is the problem we cant stop goals going in. But if we take his goals away, its a much bleaker picture.

In the prem, we have 20 goals so far this season. 4 of them scored by Ronaldo. Once again, we have shipped a feck load of goals. 21 of the feckers. Once again, how is it that Ronaldo is to blame for us not keeping out 21 goals in 12 games?

Since the start of the season we have had just 2 clean sheets out of 17 games across all comps. And none at OT since April. March if youre only looking at the PL. Ole ships goals, plain and simple. And blaming any one player for that is bullshit. Thats a failure at the manager level to recognise a problem, and address it. If his coaches werent getting it done, he should have sacked them and brought in coaches that could get it done. No matter what the issue, its up to him as the leader to see it and then fix it. He didnt.

Ole is not a great manager, simply average, and Ronaldo make things worst.

He just simply couldn't handle Ronaldo. Ronaldo is Glazer's PR buy. If the manager couldn't decide which player to play which player to sub, he has to go.

CR7 has kept ole in a job until last Sunday and had he not been signed we’d be out the CL and sitting lower in the league.

ole would have gone in early October had he not been here.

I've never seen a signing being used to absolve the manager who signed him in the first place. Ole's management knew nothing more than signing the best at every position whether or not it fit what he was trying to do. Also people can just stop saying we were a high pressing unit before he came. If you even saw that comical attempt at a high press against Liverpool you know this is a lie.

When we did not have Ronaldo last season we were still shit in terms of performances. It was just that certain individuals (Bruno) kept bailing us out. We kept having to come from behind. The only thing that changed since Ronaldo signed was that Bruno has stopped bailing us out.

So no, it's not Ronaldo's fault. It's the useless coaches and manager we have/had.

Every season there has been periods where we played horrible football and wanted Ole to get sacked. I think we can easily find many negative threads on Cafe over past 2-3 years about that. It’s just a normal cycle under Ole. The only difference is, our expectation has been sky high this season, so we can’t afford to have time to wait and let him do the rebound and follow up with “Ole on the wheel” period.

We've not had a period like this during any previous point in OGS tenure. That's why he is now sacked.

I agree to the extent that Ronaldo made this team go from top four competitiveness to expected title challengers. From what has been observed Solskjaer never truly showed the mentality or commented with conviction the need of wanting to challenge for the title. I don't think he had the confidence in himself to deliver a title. When Ronaldo comes along these types of thoughts are totally permissable because Cristiano is the personification of a winner.

It's Lampard revisited, the success of the summer transfer dealings raised the expectations beyond what the manager could deliver.

As if a negative thread on the caf proves that something is actually real. Ole needing sacking prior to this season was just the view of a loud and angry minority. It was only when the results and performances turned to something that actually supported thst conclusion that it turned into a majority view.

Agree. All Ronaldo's presence did was raise expectations to win now mode and maybe replace him as the golden child in the dressing room. People could no longer easily pass on blame or throw the squad under the bus while it contained a more accomplished United figure.

Managed a draw against Southampton, De Gea became De God against Wolves. We were always a goal or two down from last season to draw or win games (which everyone knew was unsustainable) but hey let's make thIs shit football Ronaldo's fault. Ask any journalist what Ole's style of play is and they would be mumbling jargon about counterattacking football but truly they don't know but it's Ronaldo who is to blame. I pity the fans who take these opinion and run with it because managers were sacked at clubs Ronaldo was never minding these were ruthless clubs that did not waste time on failing managers in search for success. Some of these journalists especially the English ones keep wallowing in their fergie-like concept for managers when clubs that want to be the best get rid of failing products and make changes as soon as it appears the project is heading nowhere. This is why we are were we are today and those clubs have kept coping and changing long after Ronaldo left and will keep doing that while we keep searching for the next manager to be in charge for the another 25 years while blaming the players along the way.

Good opposition managers who have faced us and done well have publicly backed and praised Ronaldo.

While he isn't perfect and was very poor in the Watford game, if you strongly believe the lesser "experts" that Ronaldo is a big problem for us, I'd suggest you take an IQ test.

I do believe the presence of Ronaldo destabilised his plans, I can't deny that, but the mark of a top class manager would be to turn that to his benefit.

It's by no means Ronaldo's fault, but the presence of Ronaldo did 2 things:
1. Present Ole with a tactical conundrum that exposed his deficiencies.
2. Abolish any psychologically safe notion that we were still gradually building a decent squad, and that mediocrity was acceptable.

It was funny that against Watford though, the goals wouldn't come. I reckon with the amount of balls Sancho and VDB were putting on a plate for Ronaldo in such a short space of time, he was suffering from a culture shock, considering the scraps he's been living off in recent weeks.
