I don’t see why, he was in our first team pool and in the England squad at the time he was renewed. Don’t confuse then with now
A five year contract to a player who at that time had also had a lot of injuries though? Doesnt make sense to give one that long. Wasnt as if he was Stam/Vidic even Bruce class either.

4+1
But I take your point, should have been a 3+1

remember that the 1 is only an option, it doesn’t have to be exercised

I’d rather have Jones in case of emergency than a youth player. Chucking Mengi on against Chelsea is enormous pressure for him, whereas at least Jones has the experience.

Ideally it won’t matter because Lindelof and Bailly play the full 90.

Umm, this guy has spent his whole time here on the treatment table. He has contributed virtually nothing for the club and has basically been gifted millions just because, not accounting for the whole treatment enchilada that the club is also paying for. So yes, fans have a right to be upset that the club is wasting millions that could have gone to actually a good player who could have contributed. This type of sentimentality has got us to where we are at the moment and the sooner we get rid of it, the sooner the club would be better. Jones is not the only example here, of course, but he is the most extreme one. He hasn't played for years. No top club would tolerate something like this. Why does it seem to me that most United fans do not have the backbone to call something like this? It's like some kind of inferiority complex is running around this club "oh we can't be like Madrid or Bayern, we're special. We have heart". Who is gonna give me 75k per week in real life for not showing up to work or doing any of it? Like any company in the world is gonna give even the slightest feck whether you're sick or not. You either do a job or you're out. Phil Jones doesn't, but okay - let's pay him because he's a good lad... or something.
224 appearances 6 goals and 3 major trophies.

Whether he should still be here or not is a fair question. But he certainly hasn't contributed nothing to the club in his 10 years here. He's currently 5th choice CB and is probably likely to leave at some point in the near future Injuries have ravaged what was potentially a excellent career but he's never sulked or shirked and when he plays he gives everything, and battling back after so many injuries and so much time out takes a lot of character it would of been very easier for him to give it all up.

He probably shouldn't still be here, but he is and he's available to play and likely to be named on the bench while our two first choice cbs are out. Nothing wrong with that.

He was fit and playing semi regular when he signed his last contract, since then he has had a major injury and been out for a long time at what point were we meant to get rid? Try selling a player with a serious injury? Or cancelling the contract of player trying to fight back to fitness? We probably don't have legal grounds to do that unless it was a career ending injury. Which it obviously wasn't.

The entitlement is unbelievable sometimes, is he good enough to be a starting cb at a club like ours? No, but that's why hes fifth choice find me a 5th choice CB at a similar level club that is good enough to start?

So £20 mill contract in wages is peanuts for a player who has probably been injury prone for the vast majority of it?
At the time when they renewed they should have given him a 1 year rolling contract dependant on how many games he can stay fit for. He would have accepted as no one else would have offered the same amount of money we were paying him.
Well that's a comment for the hyper-normalisation thread.
What's next? 400k is normal wage?
Ok, not absolute. Relatively speaking then, it absolutely is. Like I said he is one of our lowest earners. For a Man United player it is feck all. Cavani makes 4 times that and is just as injury prone as Jones was at the time of Jones' renewal.

Anyway I'm so done with the negativity in this thread. Captain hindsight everywhere, and pretending like Jones was a championship player at the time of his renewal.

Think of it this way: Injury prone England international contracted for the duration of his prime (26-30) as one the lowest earners at the club.
I'd give Tyrone Mings or Ben White the same contract any day of the week, even with Jones' injury record.

I agree 75k isn't a huge amount in the grand scheme of the expenditure ofan

I don't really understand why people get so worked up over Jones. He's had terrible luck with injuries. Hopefully he's properly back on the mend and he can finish off his career playing regularly somewhere.

No other top club would still have Jones at their club. I appreciate that he's had very bad injuries but that doesn't mean the club should still keep him on because they feel sorry for him.

Jog on captain empathy

for context: he’s in contract when he got that bad injury that’s kept him out for 18 months. He got it playing for United.

there is no legal ground to rip up his contract, we wouldn’t do it to any other player so we won’t do it for Jones and no other club is going to buy or loan a player who isn’t yet fully fit after the injury he’s come back from

so, with respect you just posted a lot of bollox

Chelsea had Van Ginkel on their books for multiple years while he had 3 knee surgeries.

You either don't think Chelsea is a top club or you don't understand contracts.

All I'm gonna say is Jones' contract is 75k, which translates to £3.9m a year so it's costing us a lot less to have him as our 5th choice CB than it would be to actually go out and sign one.

I imagine this is how the board thought when they renewed his contract last year.

Average weekly PL wage is between £50-60k. He's not on peanuts.
I understand like some have said that it makes some sort of financial sense to keep him around and it's not his fault he's struggled with injuries but he's not on a terrible wage.

The contract extension was ill-advised, but here we are now. Lindelof and Bailly to start today but if we need to bring on Jones, due to an i jury to Bailly or whatever, so be it.

Problem is he’s injured so much he’s not even available enough to be 5th choice.

Ralf said he'd play him if he was registered. Such a Phil Jones thing that he can't even play when fit because the club didn't register him thinking the guy will never be fit.

3rd round of the FA Cup will be his next and last game depending if 1. he stays fits and 2. we draw a league 2 side at Old Trafford.

That’s bad news for him, since we never draw anyone lower than a mid-table Premier League in the FA Cup

If this guy isn't gone in January, it's obvious that Jones owns MUFC

A very strange bump to a thread that hasn’t been discussed for a week…..
Not really.

Having seen the Martial news and also other players being discussed about leaving, Phil shouldn't escape under the radar.

Makes zero sense he should remain after January. The club need to get a spine and become rufless.

Seemed like a thought popped into your head which you felt necessary to share fella. That’s all.
I fully expect Phil to leave, at least on loan, in Jan. He’s been linked with a few PL teams and loads of championship sides so unless Ralf has plans for him I don’t think you need to worry!

In fairness to the poster, we've been saying the same thing for ages and yet Phil signs another contract. It's not beyond the realms of possibility that he sticks around now is it?

Presumably it’s down to the manager. Ole seemed to have a plan for Phil, which seemed to include getting back to fitness and a Jan exit. Hopefully Ralf agrees with that.
