some of you here are acting like it's Lingard that won the award, not Messi. also, it's 2021. Lewa is great, but like I've said earlier in thread, his goals in BL carry little weight because of what that league is. BL games are training matches for Bayern, their preparation for CL and to keep their players fit, nothing else. it is how it is.

which means, unless Lewa wins the CL with Bayern with him hitting crazy numbers (didn't happen), he basically has no chance against Messi. Bayern is too strong for BL for Lewa to win the award based on BL trophy only, and his NT is too weak for him to win anything on international stage.

Messi on the other hand played in actual competition before he moved to PSG and on top of that, Barca's current struggles actually add a bit to his case. I'm deliberately not even mentioning his Copa performance, as there is nothing left to be said on that matter.

he fully deserved this, no debate about that. I would have no problems with Lewa winning it as well.
That’s all great. Hope this logic will be used next year when assessing Messi’s case but I am sure goalposts will be changed because it’s Messi

The feck? Why does anyone still go there? It's officially a joke now...

I wonder how they'll award this piece of metal in 50 years when Messi and Ronaldo are too decrepit to lift it. They gonna just hand it to their heirs? Might as well...

Lewandowski robbed, but then again, that’s no major surprise.

Very generous one for Messi, that.
Not really. Either one would have been fine. Messi won a Copa and was top gs and assister. Lewa broke Bundesliga record and won league with Bayern. Flip of a coin for me.

People have recency bias (i.e. thinking Salah and Benzema have been better), but Leo deserves this award based on the entire calendar year.
Not as good stats as Lewandowski but playmakes and scores. And let Argentina to a trophy.

Should have won the year Modric laughably won. Had 51 goals and had 26 assists that year. So good for Leo. Should have 7 already.

The Ronaldo nuthuggers can cry themselves to sleeping knowing Ronaldo will never surpass Messi in Ballon D’Ors.

Well said. Lewa was definitely robbed in 2020 and I feel that's why most here wanted him to win.

From what I've seen Messi was continuously outstanding for Barca and Argentina in 2021 and was a clear favourite after the Copa America win. People seem to forget that was this summer he won it. (And that it includes the past year, not just the past few months).

Says it doesnt count if you play for Bayern in Bundesliga but then says scoring for Barca in La Liga means you deserve it.

I'm not too bothered about the Messi thing tbh, Salah, Messi, Lewa and Benz at least have an argument to win it. I'm more bewildered at the fact that Ronaldo, Kante and Jorginho finished above Salah tbh, which is in all honesty quite ridiculous.

He wasn't robbed this year nobody particularly was stand out in 2021, Messi winning it isn't surprising however they cancelled the award and robbed Lewy in 2020 based on that should he have gotten it this year? I believe so, but at the end this wasn't an award from 2020 to 2021 but from 2021 to 2021.

That's actually a joke for Messi to win it this year. Should've been Lewandowski based on the past 2 years since nobody stood out this year.

People really saying Messi doesn't deserve it because his last 10 matches of a new season hasn't been great which he still has 7 goal contributions. Please

I think Lewy should've won 2021 Ballon d'Or.

Stats from club competitions + internationals during calender year 2021 (from Transfermarkt)

Robert Lewandowski: 62 goals + 9 assists in 4346 minutes = 1.47 goal/assist per 90

Erling Haaland: 44 goals + 15 assists in 3920 minutes = 1.35 goal/assist per 90

Kylian Mbappe: 45 goals + 25 assists in 5277 minutes = 1.19 goal/assist per 90

Karim Benzema: 41 goals + 13 assists in 4791 minutes = 1.02 goal/assist per 90

Lionel Messi: 40 goals + 17 assists in 5180 minutes = 0.99 goal/assist per 90

In reality Messi should have around 8 and Ronaldo 3

Football is based on narratives, because he won the Copa he won the Balon d'Or

Messi at 70% of his peak is still better than virtually everyone else at 100%.

I think the drop in performances from his prime lead people to thinking he’s not that good anymore. If you look at the individual stats though he still puts up incredible numbers across the board. He’s the most technically skilled player in the world, putting up goals and assists, while also being able to dictate a game from deep.

Lewandowski is an incredible goal scorer but his all round game isn’t the same. There is no attacking player who has as many strings to his bow as Messi does, even at 34.

I know a lot of people don’t agree but I don’t think team trophies should count for much in this. It’s an individual award and winning the Copa or the CL is largely irrelevant.

So Ballon D'or is only based on stats?

Then why didn't Messi win in 2018 when he had over 90 goal contributions? They gave it to Modric, who wasn't and never will be better than Messi.

Give it a rest. Messi had plenty good stats and led Argentina to a title.

Messi leading Argentina is an incredibly strong story that’s hard to top even for Lewandowski. Messi has 57 G+A in 2021 so far, so in terms of stats he isn’t as good as Lewandowski, but the Copa America narrative was simply too great.

Just can’t believe Messi won in 2021 of all years and didn’t win it in 2017 or 2018 when he should have.

So really now how does this work?
Do you need to bankrupt your club to win this or what are the qualifications?
Also notice how they mostly show Lewa scoring for Poland as if this was about country suddenly? Not one shot of him lifting the CL-trophy and so on.
Joke of an award.:D (where is the clown smiley?I need one desperately)

If at least Jorginho had won the Ballon d'Or instead of Lewandowski there might have been a few reasons to chose Jorginho over Lewa.

But Messi? What a fecking joke. That was just about the name Messi and nothing else.

With that the vote the Ballon d'Or has about as much integrity, meaning and value as the vote to award world cups by Fifa. They somehow voted for Russia and Quatar. The Ballon d'Or commitee voted for Messi, when he didn't even have the fifth best season of his carrer and just isn't as good as he used to be.
Meanwhile Lewandowski broke a record that no one thought could be broken, while missing several games. What a fecking joke.

This vote should serve as a reason why "wins a Ballon d'Or" clauses in contracts are pure bullshit. The award has become a popularity contest instead of an award for the best football player.

Tbf Messi might not have deserved it this year but then he probably deserved to win it more often in the 2010s because as everyone agrees he was the best footballer from that time period.

Spot on. He was by far the best player on the planet in 2018 and was the top goal contributor. And yet ended 5th.

If you look at his stats from january to august, he's on par with some of the best seasons in his career. It dropped when he arrived at PSG (COPA + new club) but before that he was oustanding.

Well after they gave it to Modric they lost any sort of credibility anyway.

Imo it should have gone to Salah or Lewandowski, probably Robert tbh.

People are all of a sudden shocked about the result. This is the way the award has been since the 50s!

Messi deserved it. Glad he called out France Football to give Lewa the Ballon Dor for 2020.

Up to Aug 2021:

33 goals and 13 assist for Messi at Barcelona and with Argentina in Copa America

29 goals and 3 assists for Lewa with Bayern and Poland at the Euros 2020

He contributed more than Lewa until Aug 2021 and was clear favourite. Everyone knows that's the period where Ballon D'Or is decided.
