It might be harsh but Phelan wasn't highly rated among United fans even back then. Obviously from the outside looking in we don't know what he brought or didn't bring but we knew the football that we saw every week and knew it was some of the worst in the Fergie era. That whole period is why we're now dealing with so many people thinking SAF played pragmatic football with little organisation in attack. His tenure spanned over some of our worst football in 25 years. Little wonder there were questions on how much value he was really adding.
Phelan was never much of a coach, he was more of SAF's trusted colleague. But I take gripe with the coaching being responsible for our lack of play towards the end. At that point SAF was playing with basically relegation-tier players with the exception of 1-3 world class players. You really can't expect magic with these circumstances, no matter how good he was. The fact that we won a title with Buttner, Cleverley and Johnny Evans would always continue to amaze me.

SAF was a manager that put a lot of thought into his backroom staff. Throughout his time at United he always had a good number two (Brian Kidd, Steve McClaren, Walter Smith, Carlos Queiroz etc) I find it hard to believe that he would've kept Phelan around for so long if he didn't rate him. Make no mistake Phelan played an important role in that set up especially in Fergie's later years when he was getting older. There were a lot of times when Phelan would be the one out on the touchline shouting instructions.

Also, Rio said on his show a few weeks ago that Phelan wasn't involved too much in the day to day training and it was Rene that did most of the coaching. Of course Phelan was involved in tactics and team selections but come on SAF was calling all the shots. It's hard to blame Phelan for us playing 'pragmatic football'
The person I was replying noted Phelan was here for our most successful period. I am thus pointing out Phelan's resume should take as much credit for his involvement in our success as he should take accountability for his involvement in the quality of football.

Also If Rio said he was involved in our training then that's two players confirming it. Would actually also like a link on the Rio quotes if you don't mind but inany case, how much he chose to be involved is on him. It doesn't even help his case to suggest that he delegated his responsibilities while our play continued to deteriorate. Heck looks like he also 'delegated' the interim manager job to Carrick. So where would that even leave him short of just a glorified personal assistant.

I have an honest question. Has there ever been a manager who instills a toughness on his team, and tells his players that if they dive or act to influence referee decisions, they aren't playing?

imagine a team where all the players are actually tough and don't roll around in pain and shouting for foul calls, trying to get other teams players yellow carded, etc every time there is contact. Straight up just playing tough, strictly business with absolutely zero messing around until the jobs done. If they fall, they just stand up and get back to it. No drama. I feel like every player having that mind set of toughness would do wonders. The players on the team would almost be able to laugh at opposition players and make them all look like sissy's every time they roll around in pain. I feel like that change in a teams mindset could have a huge impact in games.

Is Ralf this type of manager? Will he instill toughness in our players?

Yeah. Make no mistake how Ole and his coaching staff set the club back cannot be stressed enough. Total chaos and massively unbalanced squad. This won’t be an easy job any stretch.

The squad is good the level of coaching is probably the worst in the league. Only Newcastle have less points in last 9. That's a quarter of season

We had. Regressed to as poor as I've seen us in 30 years
Maybe in terms of the league table. But our performances never consistently did. The xG stats really told the story of how lucky we were in a lot of games.

Agree. The squad is good but he's starting from the lowest possible coaching level

Inheriting the worst coached squad in the entire league, absolutely shocking. He needs to get a hold of that midfield and the likes of Rashford and give them a huge wake up call. Rashford is a shockingly bad footballer, McTominay I hope never plays again for this club

He has a huge job to do. The shambles left by Ole is something else. We are completely uncoached, players look lost and clueless, and our "pressing" is genuinely laughable.

Its not really Shambles, the team is underconfident and needs some structure. I honestly think we will be much better organised and confident come March

The United board have timed this perfectly.

They knew we had a tough run of games coming up in Villareal, Chelsea and Arsenal. So we kept the continuity going with Carrick to avoid too much disruption. Then we handed the reins over to Rangnick just in time for a slightly easier run of matches.

If RR had come in over the international break, it would have made life that much more difficult for him. The competence from the club has been brilliant. Nobody can deny that.

He can't really do anything with the squad in 3 days. I wonder what would be his main priority when prepping them for Palace? Probably psychological?
Rotate because we looked exhausted in those final 15 minutes.

I highly doubt this was planned, if Utd had beaten Watford Ole would still have been in charge

He was already a dead man walking at that stage. There were leaks to that effect before the game.
Yeah I don't see it.
Should of gone after Liverpool, let alone City. Then for him to go away on holiday.. perfect time for an interim rather than getting smashed by Watford.

It's always better to have a clean break between failure and success.

If Rangnick's first game had been a humiliation to City (and it would have been as he wouldn't have had time to do anything on the training pitch) it would have put a dark cloud over the start of his tenure.

This United team is obviously floundering due to something psychological. They're incredibly talented, with some brilliant performances under their belts in recent months, and a proven track record that got them consecutive top 3 finishes under Ole the last two seasons.

So it's not always just about the 'ability' of the manager. There's more to it than that. As such, we've given RR a clear run to change the mood in the dressing room under the best possible circumstances. That was as important as anything else we could have done. It's the same thing we did for Solksjaer when he took over from Jose and went on that incredible run.

I feel refreshed and excited. Can't wait for his first game in charge. Today's game made me love watching football again after hating last few years.

Hopefully Ralf is up to the challenge as we're going to have a tough fight for top 4. Let's enjoy those upcoming 6 months and play some great football.

In some ways this can be good. They dont need to shake out of other habits because feck all was drilled into them. Its like hes already got players after they gave been reset.

Even the way he arrives is different.

Ole would have just told the driver to go out there and have fun but Rangnick would have studied the route for weeks and drawn lines on Google maps for the best lanes to drive down.

Kinda feel he's got his work cut out for him already. Carrick just showed the players are good enough to compete with most teams so he needs to hit the ground running.

He comes in at a perfect point in time. Confidence will have returned after that, especially following Villareal & Chelsea; and the fixture list looks absolutely great.

He’ll be in the top 4 by the turn of the year and he’s already in the CL knockouts.

Yep if there's one word to describe the board it's competent

Excited to get a proper modern football manager at the top and see what changes he can bring. We are not far away from being a top club a little push in the right direction and we will be there.
