I'll make a try for Germany.
Biggest question for me ist the formation, do I go for a classic 442 or 352 formation.

GK: Neuer (Kahn, Maier)
RB: Breitner, he played midfield most for his career, but at the beginning he was a right back and I want strong offensive fullbacks in this lineup. (Lahm)
CB: Beckenbauer (Boateng, a marvel at his peak)
CB: Sammer (Kohler for an old school hard nosed CB)
LB: Brehme (Schnellinger)
CM: Matthäus (Ballack)
CM: Kroos (Schweinsteiger)
OM: Schuster (Özil, Möller)
RW: Rummenigge (T.Müller)
LW: Reus (?)
ST:. G.Müller, Seeler and for the poaching ability Klose
Heynckes at RW and Rummenigge at LW makes more sense than Reus imo.

I know Portuguese fans love Rui Costa but I wouldn't sleep a wink as a manager the night before I picked him centrally in what is basically a midfield 2 unless you're asking Futre or Deco to do it. I'd much rather go to war with Deco in a midfield 2 or the boring but reliable Tiago Mendes. Or drop Futre, play Cristiano out left and bring in Deco to play in a 4-3-3 alongside Rui Costa ahead of your DM.
If Rui Costa is out then I would swap him with Deco.

No way in hell does Futre get dropped on that left wing, at his peak he was unplayable in the sport, only behind Maradona and Platini. Easily the 4th most talented Portuguese player ever.

He is massively underrated.

However Deco is a very fair option, Rui Costs narrowly made that cut.

Aye. Tend to think a narrower shape like 352 or a 4132 is the best way to accommodate all the great central players, and you can just leave Muller and Rummenigge up top to get on with it.

One of my favorite players. I agree with you that he should be in the starting eleven. I thought of a 433 (in the 442 he would be too far from the goal). Futre on the right, Eusebio and Cris, but the problem is what to do with Figo. Figo as a midfielder alongside Coluna and Deco/Rui Costa?

Nah that’s why I have it in a 41212.

Coluna Will run the midfield in that box to box role with either deco or Rui costa ahead of him.

Futre and Figo as the Left and Right mids and CR7 and Eusébio Up top. At least that’s how I would set it up to make use of the attacking talent.

Southall

Ben Davies; Ashley Williams; Collins

A top heavy team. Formation makes little, but I just went with three defenders so I can shove in more attackers.

Kanu is too good for this team.

Just going by reputation and some sort of positional accuracy, maybe something like:
Seaman
Moore Adams Ferdinand
Robson (c)
Gascoigne Gerrard
Charlton
Matthews Barnes
Greaves

Manager: Brian Clough.

Gary Kelly is one of the best right backs the Prem has ever seen, and consistent too. Giggs said he was the toughest right back he ever played against. Deserves to be in over Dunne or Staunton imo.
Aye, well pick a team and put him in it so.

Harder then it looks, but for a functioning team based on 3-5-2

GK - Gordon Banks (what a player, honorable mentions to Clemence, Seaman, Shilton)

CB - Bobby Moore (66 winning captain)
CB - Rio Ferdinand (playing 3 at the back so need speed)
CB - Des Walker (See above)

LW - Stanley Matthews (Wizard)
RW - Bobby Charlton (as above)

CM - Glenn Hoddle (underrated and exceptional passer, needed a lynchpin in midfield)
CM - Duncan Edwards (would of been Englands greatest player imo, could do everything)
CM - Paul Gascoigne (needed a midfielder to make runs into the box)

CF - Jimmy Greaves (Tricky Dynamic forward (think Aguero) and best GPG ratio of all with 20+ goals)
CF - Harry Kane (Bit more of a target player and can drop deep, 2nd best GPG ratio of all with 20+ goals)

Tons missed out such as Lineker, Rooney, Beckham, Scholes, Shearer, Adams, Jack Charlton, Hurst, Peters etc etc, could probably make 3 capable England teams tbh.

4231: Schmeichel; Helveg, Kjær, Agger, N. Jensen; Gravesen, Højbjerg; B. Laudrup, M. Laudrup, Eriksen; Dahl Tomasson.

T. Sørensen, Sand, A. Christensen, Schöne, Rommedahl, Grønkjær, Tøfting, C. Poulsen.

I have to admit I only barely remember seeing the Laudrups.
How is Elkjaer not in this lineup? Ballon d'or runner up in '84 and 3rd in '85. Fantastic forward and notorious smoker!
.....and Allan Simonsen? Ballon d'or winner in '77.

As a Norwegian - I will only look at players I have seen play live ... so from early 80s onwards. And I will play a 4-5-1

Erik Thorstvedt - the best, and probably only really good goalkeeper we have had. We had a few solid ones like Thomas Myhre and Frode Grodås, but Thorstvedt was class.

Stig I Bjornebye / John Arne Riise - I can't really decide which I prefer out of these two. I genuinely despise Riise as a person but he was a brilliant player. One of the best shots in the P.L during his time there, while Bjornebye had superb crosses.

Rune Bratseth - arguable the best central defender in the Bundesliga in the late 80s. Was at his best when Norway wasn't, and only got to be part of a really good Norwegian side for a few years when he had turned 30

Brede Hangeland - a rock in the Fulham defense for 6 years. Would have walked into most Premier League sides today.

Gunnar Halle - Norways version of Denis Irwin. Always reliable and considered the best foreign player ever at Oldham. Scored 17 goals in 188 matches and was a regular for Oldham for 6 seasons.

Morten G Pedersen - a great career at Blackburn with over 30 goals in total in his first 4 seasons. 17 goals in 83 matches for Norway. Still active and scored 12 goals in division 3 in Norway last year, 40 years old. Will play in division 2 this season.

Kjetil Rekdal - had a great career in Belgium with Lierse where he scored 71 goals in 180 matches as a central midfielder. Captain for Norway during the mid 90s when Norway were one of the best teams in Europe. 17 goals in 83 matches for Norway

Tom Lund - perhaps the best Norwegian player never to play professionally. Was so good that Ajax wanted him as replacement for Cruyff, while Lund played in the 3 division in Norway. And Lund turned them down. Ron Greenwood called him the best footballer in the world.

Hallvar Thoresen - left for Twente at the age of 18 and eventually joined PSV where he scored over 100 goals in 180 matches as an attacking midfielder in the 1980s, where he played with stars such as Eric Gerets, Ruud Gullit, Frank Arnesen, Arie Haan, Hans van Breukelen, Soren Lerby and the v.d Kerhof-twins under Guus Hiddink

Martin Odegaard - hasn't really done enough for Norway to warrant it - but has played at a higher level than Bohinen, Mykland and Leonhardsen so I will give him the last position. Captain for Norway, regular for Arsenal. One of the best in La Liga with Sociedad at the age of 20.

Erling B Haaland - one of few Norwegians in history who can be considered close to world class. In a league of his own in todays team
Would maybe put peak and injury free Ronny Johnsen in that team over Hangeland....

Mine's not too different and I agree with the formation! Obviously this is only post-1994:

Šuker Mandžukić
Boban
Perišić Rakitić Modrić Srna
Šimunić Tudor R. Kovač
Pletikosa

GK: All three of Ladić, Subašić and Pletikosa were mostly reliable, without really excelling. With a little more luck in 2008, Pletikosa doesn't have to hide in regards to achievements.
DF: In terms of centre backs the pool is really deep. Šimunić, Tudor, Kovač, Ćorluka, Bilić, Štimac, Vida, Šimić, Jerkan, Lovren. Opting for three non-1998/2018ers seems peculiar, but I think overall Šimunić and Robert Kovač were the best and most complete stoppers and Tudor the most talented sweeper, just dogged by injuries. Srna is nailed on at RB or RWB, on the left it's either Perišić or Jarni (in a back four).
MF: Modrić and Boban are nailed on for me, but the third spot is a little more open. Niko Kovač, Asanović and Prosinečki are the major alternatives, while Niko Kranjčar has been a wonderful player for the NT as well. Rapaić would be my cult hero option.
FW: I think Šuker and Mandžukić are nailed on given their contributions, but Dudu and Bokšić are not too far behind. Dudu's goal rate is only bettered by Šuker and without the career-altering injury he could have a place in the starting 11. Then there are Olić and Pršo as further back-ups.

Coach: Slaven Bilić. Some would give it to Dalić for the 2018 success, but the performances under Bilić have been better in every way bar tournament results. Shoutout to Čačić for a surprisingly decent Euro 2016 (maybe the coach doesn't really matter that much for this lot).

Oops sorry, you put Ramsey as manager.

Is this thread the best players from a country or playing for a country? If its the latter, how on earth are Gerrard and Scholes getting in so many England elevens....My England eleven (from my lifetime wathcing from early 80s cant judege past players before then never seen):

Shilton
Neville
Ferdinand
Butcher
Ashley Cole
Chris Waddle
Paul Ince
Paul Gascogine
Peter Beardsley
Sheringham
Shearer

Italia 90 and Euro 96 players as in major tournaments I think they have been our best players. I think Ince especially for England has been criminally under rated, always good for ENgland with some outsnading games too, Gerrards good performances I could count on one hand for England, he was a better player than Ince, there are quite a few, but for ENgland......never.

The good thing is there are a few in the current squads I think can actually get in this squad if we were to redo it in a decade

And where's Prosinečki?

No love for Ćiro? :)
I'd give it to Dalić, say what you will but he's out most successful coach ever. I have a special place for Bilić though and 2008 still haunts me. 2012 we played some good stuff although not going through.

Come to think of it I'd go with 4 at the back, Jarni and especially Srna have to be there.

Šimunić and Kovač were great but Štimac, Bilić, Šimić were something else.
We had and still have some truly great mids, some would put Prosinečki instead of Asanović cause of club career. Our legendary 2nd captain Niko too.
Dudu could have been close to Šuker, he was magnificent, that injury ruined his career. :(

Behind the right goal post as "Whiteside shoots!"
Wales. 442 (obvs).

Neville Southall (best British goalie I’ve seen, vital part of the excellent mid 80s EFC team … & gave us “well done, he’s 13”)

Clayton Blackmore (the weak spot (sorry Clayton) but a long-serving United player who played both FBs)
Kevin Ratcliffe (captain of the excellent mid 80s EFC team)
John Charles (The Gentle Giant, a Wales great… an all time great. Excellent at CF and CH, one of the great all round players)
Gareth Bale (moved to earlier career LB position to accommodate Giggs but can double up down the left and joint rip FBs)

Cliff Jones (a 2 in 5 scoring right winger for Spurs for years and a key part of the Spurs double winners)
Gary Speed (only Irwin was as consistently good. 7/10 min every game. Leeds, Bolton, Newcastle, Everton… loved. RIP)
Aaron Ramsey (career maybe didn’t go as high as he hoped/we thought it would but top player especially for Wales Intls)
Ryan Giggs (most decorated British player ever. A great. Excellent chest hair)

Ian Rush (best out and out British goal scorer I’ve seen and harasser of CHs, Liverpools first line of defence. Deadly)
Mark Hughes (a brilliant foil for Rush, gave any CH a battle and could chip in with the odd goal, especially great ones)

Subs. Dai Davies, Joey Jones, Terry Yorath, Dean Saunders, Craig Bellamy

( @Lecland07 . Only joking :) just saw no Charles or one of my favourite non United players. Quite a lot the same, we have had a lot of attacking talent, hard to fit in?)

Ćiro transcends every comparison. ;)

For me Šimić was an enigma. First player to reach 100 caps, played for Milan and Inter, but it seemed that there were always multiple better/more talented defenders around.

As I said, I think Pletikosa vs Ladić vs Subašić is a toss-up for me. And Raktić vs Prosinečki vs Asanović is tough as well. I feel the former contributed more in the checkered shirt than Prosinečki at least.

If we're defining greats by purely looking at peak international success, then it's a 1998/2018 combo, I guess. With the likes of Štimac and Bilić included, although I still wouldn't be willing to replace Srna.

Huh. This is interesting.

Let's see

Buffon
Maldini-Baresi-Nesta-Facchetti
Oriali-Pirlo-Tardelli
Riva-Totti-Baggio

Sticking with players from the 60s forward. Honorable mentions for Rivera, Mazzola, Bettega, Conti, Vialli, Vieri, Dino Baggio, De Rossi, Verratti, Zoff, Cannavaro, Bergomi, Zambrotta, Scirea, Cabrini, Pruzzo, Donadoni, Pulici, Rossi, Federico Chiesa

Fairly easy for France, we don't have a long history of winning and outside of Kopa and Platini all our best players are from the 98 team and later

Lloris
Thuram Desailly Blanc Lizarazu
Deschamps Vieira
Zidane
Mbappe Trezeguet Henry

Bench: Barthez, Varane, Sagnol, Makelele, Platini, Kopa, Benzema
