Maguire: I wouldn't be starting every game if I was playing bad or not playing well enough, there's a reason both managers put me in XI every game

Has he actually come out and fronted the press, as captain, since his shambolic performance last night?
He rarely does even though he's our 'captain'. It's oddly always up to De Gea or Bruno to face the music after embarrassments

What should he say?

"Yeah tbf I've had a rubbish season and should probably not be be in the team"

As bad as he has been, he's never going to say that.

This impotent anger over every soundbite is more embarassing.
Admitting that he is underperforming might be a start? Acceptance might gain him some sympathy points.

Are you serious? He should say that he is being asked to do a job by the club and the manager...it’s an honour...if he is asked to step aside he will...but until then he will continue to do his best to represent this great club.

It ain’t hard. It gives RR a perfect opportunity to start the process.

Honestly I’m not too upset at this interview and for good reason. I always figured he’s going to be hard to get rid of, but if he’s this delusional, if we drop him, he would likely look to leave thinking he can do better. People are still blinded by the media and I’m positive someone would take him from us and give him a good enough deal for him to take it. Of course it’ll be a lot of money wasted but it’s better than keeping a player until his contract expires to do nothing.

So if he has truly been terrible, why is it that he has played near enough every game?

I'm yet to hear anyone actually answer this, because it's not injuries (we could have played Lindelgod, Jones, Bailly, Varane over him at any point in the season, as they haven't been injured all the time), so why is it he is playing??

i mean injuries are a part of it. Jones bailly, and varane havent been fit consistently between them. And then you are ignoring the fact that it isnt an "either" situation, but can also be an "and' situation. Maguire can be terrible "and" the other options arent any better. Same as our shit midfield situation. McFred can be a terrible option "and" our other options can be trash as well.

Because he is the club captain. RR should have dropped him and I hope he does it now after the disaster of yesterday.

Because he is captain and the one generally almost always fit? Either that or it's politics (likely just this).

I guarantee you he will not start under ETH. No chance.

A)He is literally too slow to play pro sports.
B)He’s really not even that good a defender. Not the strongest, not the most agile, not a superb reader of the game.
C)His ball playing skills, which we supposedly got him for, suck.

He wouldn’t start for any other top side in the world. Its a joke.

Going to be interesting how ETH handles him given the reports about him being ready to get rid of a lot of our English core

So we're saying Varane and Lindelgod are no better?
Or Jones?
This is confusing as the general consensus on here is anyone could do better than Maguire this season?

I'm furious over this. Worst CB in the league this season and amongst the worst I've ever seen play for United.

What politics though?

Jones has been fit for most of the season?
Bailly was fit last night?

not really sure how you can be confused but can reiterate. Maguire playing so much is a combination of others being injured as well as some not being any better. What is so confusing man jesus

So we are saying then that Maguire is the best defender at the club?

The weird thing is we have more depth in CB positions than any other at the club, Bailly was fit last night, Jones has been fit most of the season.

He’s just completely out of his depth as club Captain and as world’s most expensive defender. Leicester we’re the right club for him, Utd is just a step too far in his career. His comments before Liverpool game were always going to come back to haunt him.

I always liked Smalling. He was a beast in terms of speed, strength and in the air. His positioning and reading of the game was underrated. He dominated the penalty box. His only flaw was a lack of technical skill, but considering we're awful playing out from the back anyway it wouldn't have made a difference.
Absolutely! He could switch off sometimes, but lots of top defenders seem to.

Give him a partner who’s good on the ball (how about Daley Blind?) and his awkwardness became a non-issue.

I mean it's not hard to work out. We spunked 80m on him the club see him as a hugely valuable assets. One they can't allow to depreciate by sitting on the bench. So managers will be pressured to play him. Plus being handed the captaincy it's very hard to drop your club captain. Then finally many of the other defenders can't put 5 games together without being injured. Bailly being available for one match and not being anywhere near match fit is not an actual option. When have any of the other defenders been available for more than 5 in a row except maguire?

yep pretty much the way it is. this club is so worthless that we keep players like Jones and Bailly around when they shouldve been moved on for new talent to come in, so now we dont have any decent depth to put in to correct this mistake. Plus the club dont want to admit they blew 80 on maguire and 50 on awb and both are looking like huge waste of money. Hopefully we just move on from maguire, bring in whatever CB ETH and company think will work best in his system, and then just roll with New CB-Varane-and then lindelof as 3rd depth option.

My only big issue with him was the bad habit to grab on opponents, it was particularly problematic during that short period of time where referees decided that Football was non-contact sport. He could also sometimes be nervous on the ball for no reason since he has always been average, it's not has if he couldn't deal with the ball but he had the common sense to smash it far or out of play. I would say the same thing about Jones, Jones has had some memorable bloopers but people seem to forget that those were rare, his issue has been fitness and nothing else. Both of them were better than Lindelof and Maguire.

The pure delusion runs strong in this family...
Delusion is a clear family trait. Police trying to break up drunken street brawl being mistaken for being Albanian thugs on a kidnapping mission scheming and abducting rich people for extortion and actively kicking the leg to wreck his career was particularly tragic and somewhat telling. Took him 1 hour to realize they were police according to himself, at wich point he tries to bribe his way out... I lost a lot of respect for him, such poor judgment that whole thing. The Maguires seem to have this over inflated sense of self that's not properly anchored in the reality of normal people. Sad to see so many mercenaries and daftheads leeching us dry for whatever crap agenda and that one happens to be our captain... we need a triple digit IQ captain that's either outright smart or streetsmart, and has a sense of ambassadorship, likeability, leadership or charm to them, not this poor excuse of a spineless charachter and his leechy entourage...
Sorry in advance to people that stick by him no matter what, but he is projecting massive loser vibes and I'm probably not alone being fed up by him.

I kinda feel for her as it must be hard to watch one of your loved ones being constantly ridiculed but why did she need to add that “one of the best players” bit… it takes an understandable take and moves it into a sphere of grandiose delusion.

That's an understatement.

I thought that was only about Harry, but it seems that everyone in that family needs to stop and reflect about what kind of thick people they are.

I honestly don't see why so many people are so mad at this, its obvious why he's playing and he's not gonna say oh I'm starting because Bailly is a liability, Varane Is injury prone and Jones is made of glass, people need to get a grip, so he believes in himself, wow, big deal,
No one has played well this season and lots have made loads of errors.

I think he’s a good guy and means well. His problems with pace and positioning leaves him exposed in a high press/high line system. He doesn’t have the footballing intelligence of Daley Blind to compensate. I feel for the guy, the amount of criticism he receives will affect any confidence he has left. I think he can be better with the right coaching. Just needs to give up the captain’s armband, get his head down and focus on his football.

Besides the obnoxious and undeserved arrogance, he comes across as massively thick lacking any self-awareness - on what planet was he on when he thought it would be a good idea to make these comments, couple to the whole giving it the ears after scoring a header against Albania and retweeting the vids of him pinging those passes under no pressure against Norwich. It's just made him look a bigger joke and even more unlikeable than he already is.

Based on? I’m only asking cause the guy was arrested in Greece mouthing off about who he is yet for some reason people give him more benefit of the doubt than others. He’s done no more to be classed a good guy than most of this squad, I don’t understand this need to qualify the guy. Means well. . .
