Its definitely a modern thing.

Rio Ferdinand didn't get a send off. Roy Keane didn't get a send off. David Beckham didn't get a send off. Jaap Stam didn't get a send off. Where was the send off for Steve Bruce, Gary Pallister, Bryan Robson?

Of course, its nice for players on their last game to be able to give the crowd a wave. However, the way this is being puffed up by the media and the player's entourage is strange.

By all accounts, if Jesse had had his wishes he'd never have come back from West Ham, or gone to Newcastle in January, and wouldn't have had a send off. So why the big moan now?
I agree I think all things considered it's a ridiculous notion

Has United’s fanbase always been this angry/toxic or is it a byproduct of United being shit?

Lingard thinking these stories drenched in victim mentality and self pity are going make fans feel sorry for him is nauseating.

 Shows how conditioned fans are to managers spouting meaningless bollox when someone giving direct answers to direct questions is accused of verbal diarrhoea.
Not really. I just don't think a manager should be blaming and questioning the players and staff in the middle of press conferences, and telling the world that most of them have no future here in the middle of the season. Maybe I'm just old fashioned that way , but it stinks of a lack of authority that he can't deal with these things behind closed doors.

So many of our players are fecking deluded.
From Lingard’s perspective I can see how it would be disappointing seeing Cavannual Leave get a run out, but I agree with Carton Cole.

It doesn't make sense unless a football player is a stakeholder in any organisation I can't see why a send off is necessary.
Because we've elevated the status of our players above all else. Above fans, above managers, above the club itself.

I say we, I mean Woodward mainly. But the fans are complicit in this.

They are not servants to the club, the club is a servant to them, just a vehicle to grow their brands.

Should havr gone 3/4 seasons ago. He is exactly the kind of player Keane ranted about several years ago. Got the contract, the ££, the cars, the house and the fame and stopped working for it. Took his eye further off the job when he started his ridiculous clothing business and then the jlingz dancing on social media whilst he continued to under perform and let the fans down. No sympathy from me.

You don't need to convince me about Rangnick's often questionable sense of tact, boundaries, and confidentiality, in information-sharing.
But it's still not equivalent, as the manager is actually tasked with giving press conferences and thus giving public answers to the questions posed by the media, the players are not. It's his job.

Also I'm not saying Lingard's behaviour is the worst anyone's ever done or anything, or that it might not be in part understandable. In fact I posted how I think the club (not Rangnick, who had signed off on Lingard going on loan) made a mistake not letting him leave and with the "relegation avoidance bonus" etc he has a right to feel aggrieved. It seemed like a last hurrah of Woodward-style transfer behaviour to me, inviting trouble.
But it's become very obvious people in Lingard's 'camp' and 'close to him' (and in light of recent tweets it's not hard to see who that is and how close they are) have been feeding the media all season. That is on Lingard, and managers will and should not accept it. He's lucky he wasn't frozen completely for this stuff.
Say what you will about Rangnick (and god knows I did  ), but he is an experienced manager who has shown a clear, consequent line of dressing room management in the past.
To be honest, I think if you as the manager aren't going to respect boundaries and confidentiality in information sharing, then you really can't expect the players to do the same. Firing shots across the media is going to invite the same treatment back.

Either way, I'm no fan of Lingard and think his behaviour and dedication has been poor in recent years. I just think we should have been the bigger man in this case rather than petty and vindictive. He's certainly done a lot more in the shirt than Cavani has.

As the poster below you said, we subbed on Cavani who has been a fraud the entire season and running away from United to play for his national team while stealing his wages regularly, yet we gave him a final sub appearance at Old Trafford.

Give the guy a 5 minutes sub appearance before leaving. It wouldn't have hurt anyone really.

I don't care but really an unnecessary move.
I wouldn't have subbed Cavani on and I don't get why he's so liked. He's taken the piss this season.

But I still don't think that means anything in regards to Lingard. He didn't deserve a send off, he should be thankful he managed to get paid and stick around about 4 or 5 years longer than he should have. He had the cup final goals in 2016 and 2017 and one good run of form in 2018.

He's done almost nothing for Utd in the 4 years since.

There will be a pillow hump event at OT next week. People can say their farewells then.

That’s the bottom line. Throw in rumours/observations about the role that a lack of commitment might have played in those blank 4 years and you can see why he’s not exactly getting an emotional send-off.

As for Cavani, he did a lot of good things for us as recently as last season. So that probably bumps him ahead of Lingard in the queue to say thanks for his services.

To be fair they probably aren't wrong. Cavani didn't deserve to get on.
I‘d be interested in knowing how the Caf would decide. Who is more worthy of getting a few final minutes at Old Trafford, Cavani or Lingard. Obviously, Lingard has been here much longer, but all in all, does he deserve a farewell more than others?

A poll would be great. What would the people decide?

So the briefs that ETH wanted him are not true eh? What a surprise. He is playing for a whole year like it's a testimonial so can't see why he is upset.

I'd say somebody who has been here since a child probably deserves it more than a guy that's been here less than 2 years.

Whether we like Lingard or not he has given us some good moments. FA cup win etc. I know it's ended a bit sour but considering the way Cavani has been so wishy washy of late, it does seem a bit harsh.

Lots of media reaction. Interesting how the journos are coming out to bat for him. Very interesting...
They're upset all the stories he's been drip-feeding them all season are about to dry up.

People go on how Cavani "took the piss" or was a "fraud" this season but this really is just a narrative that prospered in the absence of him being fit to play. For all we know, he really couldn't play any more games and has done nothing to deserve blame for it. It's a bit like what happened with Dembélé over the years at Barca, the longer the kid was out, the more people piled on him forgetting how well he actually played when he was playing.
Everyone loved Cavani when he was playing, too, and for good reason - also in the media, his "leadership" and "body language" and so on, and then he misses one game after Uruguay duty, when he wouldn't have been able to play anyway, followed by more injury struggles, and people go down the rabbit hole.

Rangnick, after he took over, was also clearly very impressed with Cavani's behaviour on and off the pitch so he probably holds him in high regard. And why wouldn't he, Cavani has been a world class striker and top professional for many, many years.

"Classless" United. Nevermind the millions he has has gotten by being a bit shit at football & letting him doing all kind of daft stuffs on the social media. Feck them. If United didnt have a patience with him he would have less money, less reputation and less experience. Be grateful for once you self overrating pricks.

We completely mismanaged him, particularly after his excellent West Ham stint. We should have (properly) re-introduced him to the squad or, and this would've been preferable, sold him for good money. These were the two logical options. We invented a third option which was to not sell him, not play him and watch his value depreciate while he lingered in no mans land and grew in resentment.

Having said that, he is also an absolute man-child with zero self awareness as @Strats so eloquently put it. His behaviour has been shocking and he did not deserve a send-off.

No send off for bang average captain cringefest who should have been gotten rid of years ago. Cry me a river Jesse, or better yet just swim in the one made from all the leaks to the press.

The sooner he fecks off and we stop hearing about him the better.

Fascinating that the media spend 24 hours of every day slamming all our players yet now defend Lingard who has done the square root of feck all for this club in 3 years. He didn’t care about getting a goodbye in January when he wanted to go on a 6 month loan deal having refused a permanent transfer that would give us a fee did he? No. Instead he bleated on in the media about how unfair it all was and then wasn’t in the right state of mind to play the next game.
Great decision by Ralf not giving him his undeserved "testimonial" - this situation currently shows who the media's darlings are. Rashy, Maguire and Lingard are there because they are leakers or just being English, but it's actually a situation where both parties (media and players) are trying to slam the club for their own wrongdoings and basically, just being shite on the pitch.

I'd like to see other English players be sold as well - yes Luke, Harry and Rashy, you are next. Your attitude stinks and the level of performances aren't worth to wear that shirt.

Pretty much.

I’ve been a big defender of Lingard when he was getting shit loads of flack. He has done more than a lot of players, and he would’ve been a useful and perfectly decent squad player in a better/Fergie team. However the fact he thinks he’s owed it (and has clearly thought he was owed more respect/status for much of the season if not longer) says a lot more about the state of the club and the players attitude than the fact we didn’t give it to him. Fergie’s last act as manager was to drop Rooney and tell everyone he wanted out on the day of his last game at OT.

Also one of the “3 Cup Final goals” his brother alludes to was in the Charity Shield, as is one of the “4 domestic trophies” - with another being the Europa League, so he’s also a bit of an idiot.

Just that idea that every player deserves some kind of send-off is itself the worst kind of sentimentality. We're in this position because we're not ruthless and we're overly sentimental, refusing to make clinical, cold decisions that move the club forward and instead leaning on past sentiment.
Im sorry but I just disagree with this so much.

Not giving human beings who have spent over 2 decades at the club a sendoff is just shitty, classless behavior and I expect a lot more from this club than that. Manchester United is known for their class and tact. Manchester United has partnered with UNICEF for the past 23 years, the club paid all their matchday staff full wages during covid, the Manchester United Foundation do a lot of tremendous community work in the Manchester area. The club frequently hosts fans with debilitating handicaps to visit the grounds and meet the players, and the players themselves are involved in both the MUFC Foundation and other charities.

We have all sat and listened to speeches of club greats who have been given a microphone at the grass of Old Trafford to say their goodbyes to 80 thousand people and everyone at home watch. From Sir Alex Ferguson, Nemanja Vidic, Ole Gunnar Solskjær, Wayne Rooney and more. All club greats with a long and loved story at the club. Common for them all is that they saw tremendous success with the team and lifted trophies. Is that what we are now? We only appreciate players if they lift trophies and dont annoy us on social media?

The people who give speeches give speeches because they are monumental players that deserve the respect. What we can, and should do for players who have been loyal servants is the minimal decency of lettting them run on the pitch of Old Trafford and kick the ball one final time. That is not a lot to ask.

Jesse gets a lot of shit for even being employed here, earning a lot of money and not having playd all that well for a while. Not just shit, but outright hostile toxicity. Ive seen some who have lambasted him for not leaving, conveniently ignoring that the club hierarchy set a price on Jesse that West Ham and Newcastle were unwilling to pay. Jesse wanted to leave to play football, but he couldnt. He was not allowed to because the brass wanted more money than they could get. And Jesse gets blamed.

2 years ago Jesse had perhaps the worst season of his career, and he went to Ole and told him that he was struggling mentally, with issues in his personal life outside of his control that added to it. Outside of the dabs, Jlingz and a desire to go somewhere else to find playingtime you absolute cnuts have forgotten how to behave like adults and be respectful of people.

Who gives a shit if he told Paul Scholes that the dressing room was unhappy? Did you think it was after this season? - Paul Scholes is essentially Manchester United royalty, he is someone who should be able to keep a secret, especially one told in confidence. I dont blame Jesse one bit for talking to Paul about whats going on. Paul should have kept his mouth shut.

Unless ETH says differently, Jesse is now leaving the club. Ralf Rangnick who have spent a cool 5 months at the club without uniting the dressing room, or even trying, in his final act at Old Trafford has decided that 22 years of life at Manchester United was not worthy off a sendoff in front of the home crowd.

Letting players who have spent most of their lives at the club having a few minutes in front of the home crowd is the bare minimum of what they should be given. If we cant do that, we are a nothingclub.

All talk about being ruthless and clinical is genuinely pointless drivel when what happened yesterday could not impact what happens at the club going forward one bit. The only thing it displayed was bitterness and a lack of ability to forgive and reflect.

I dont really care that Jesse had a rough few seasons here. He came out and adressed his personal issues and how it impacted his on-field contribution, he went out on a loan, killed it and came back ready to fight for a spot in the team. He was not successful, but at least he tried.

It leaves me with a bitter taste that there are vultures here that have forgotten how to be decent people. Shame on you

The funniest thing hes done this year was telling Scholes about the dressing room unrest and Scholes later said he knew it from Lingard   . Leaker exposed. And you expect a sendoff? did Nani get a sendoff? why should you?

To be fair Lingard did not look put out on any occasion that I saw him on camera yesterday, so maybe let's let the comments from his brother lie with his brother, we have no idea whether he personally is upset about it...

Those with agendas are too far gone, but let's not get washed away in the bullshit with them. All we do know is that he told Scholes the dressing room is a mess, and that he winds up half the cafe for reasons mostly not related to football...

It’s not his fault the club gives mediocre players great contracts - but also - he must surely be aware he’s getting overpaid so if he so desperately wanted to leave he should’ve taken a pay cut

but he’s been dialling it in for months so I don’t think he deserved a nice farewell

but I sincerely wish him all the best

It's possible the club know things we only suspect; like him being the, or one of the players that were responsible for the leaks in the press or even creating the poor atmosphere we are talking about. It's mostly speculation but if true, the club are correct in distancing themselves from the player. Far better players have been dealt with much harsher then this when they've overstepped the line.

For all the good things he has done he was paid a kings ransom that he would not have gotten at a lower club that was to his level. All things considered United has showed almost stupid levels of patience and rewarded him far beyond his actual contribution. No other big club in the World would have kept him for so long on the kind of wages he is on.

Not sure why everyone’s so adamant he’s the leaker. It might have just been a one time little causal chat to Scholes where he mentioned the changing room isn’t good after being asked despite every single person on the planet knowing this. Not sure how people are using this to blame him for every leak that happened
Because there's be loads of articles about Lingard that paint him in a positive light since last summer.

It's no coincidence that lots of journalists are now jumping to his defence.

You'd have to be very naive to not connect the dots.

Think of all the players Sir Alex discarded without a second thought to he might hurt their feelings over no farewell appearance, because they stepped out of line for him.

And a fair few of those guys did a lot more than Lingard did. Even supreme media darling David Beckham felt the Sir Alex wrath.

How the feck has he been a disgrace and a leech?

I get that he can be annoying at times, and his PR clearly isn’t up to scratch, but there’s no way he’s been either, he gave us very good squad player service for many years, sure he wasn’t of the standard you want from a United player but there’s nothing he can do about that. He openly wanted to go get football and when it didn’t happen AND he didn’t get the games here that he was promised it’s really soured everything, but that’s on Ole. It’s his time to go (well, last summer was but again, that’s on Ole) but he’s far from the things you just described, show some god damn perspective.

He’s also FAR from the most mediocre player post Fergie.
I'll admit I'm using hyperbolic words here, just fed up of players like him and him being the face of the generation of underperforming players thinking they have made it. Also players in said group are protected by their mates in the media. Of course we can't provide evidence that he is one of the leaks but it's very suspicious that he has barely been called out by media over the years. Bar one single purple patch he hasn't been a good squad player at all. Why the acceptance that not contributing but just making up numbers is seen as 'very good squad player' status?

This past year has been a shitshow from both parties (mainly the club) but he hardly put himself in a good light either. I mean he didn't exactly push to leave either and in January he refused to move other than on loan as nice payback to the club for the previous summer (again understandable from his financial POV). The club fecked up by awarding mediocre players like him the massive wages they got but his billy big bollocks and childish behaviour while contributing feck made it worse. Again not his fault alone, but of course the players will bear the brunt of the criticism. The videos of him in the team bus before the important match against WH away, the holiday video with Rashford with the pillow humping, the 'beanz' videos etc. Clothing line launched, the %-response to criticism - he has come across as immature and unprofessional and acting like a star player all while contributing feck all except from a final goal and a small purple patch - in the club's worst period since SAF started winning. And when the media finally picked up on him not scoring or assisting for a year, out came the PR campaign. He was ok to decent at best in a couple of matches in a row against Spurs and Liverpool (?) and out came the sobbing story of his personal issues over the past year and that he finally has discovered the "old Lingard" - for him to go back to being terrible again.

All while collecting a massive wage making it borderline impossible to get rid (again club's fault, but he's the face of it). If he had left, say three years ago, I'm sure he would have been viewed better and might have gotten a proper send off but instead he has spent these past years stinking up the place while making excuses and putting his face out there like some star player- I can understand from his POV as a United fan growing up that he has wanted to cling on to his contract and status for dear life but he should also expect that with that attitude that he won't be held in a high esteem.

230 matches for us. He's been of the biggest contributors to our demise on the field.

Did O’Shea or Jonny Evans or Park get send offs? Nope.

All contributed far far more to the club.
