I know it's been discussed to death but I still can't figure out if he's a box-to-box or a DM. Looks like he occupies the same positions during play as Scott from the youtube videos.
There is the transcript of an interview with ETH a couple of pages back. He said the best position for him is a 6 but with more freedom. Similar to Pogba when played with Matic, imo.

I dont see Barcelona selling him to us. He doesnt want to leave, the only reason we are linked to him is his relationship with ETH.

Reminds me of Di Maria this. A player if joined joining us for sake of it not football motivated.

So not what we need? We need a replacement for Matic that can play every game.

This just sounds naive imo. I cant see De Jong choose United over City just because of the manager. City is the best club in the world and will be for years. Im sure De jong wants to play one-two with Fred or Mctominay in a midfield two, or dominate every midfield with Rodri and De bruyne. We are a bloody mess and the worst run club in the world. Fans are grasping at straws here in a desperate situation. No way De Jong wants to join us. It will only happend if Barca forces him out and no other club are willing to pay big money for him. It will be United of old again. Most fans agreed we had to take a different approach in the transfer market this summer, so im supriced so many are losing their head and not sticking to their gun when the first big name is getting linked to us.
Not just the manager but also the system. Pep plays 433, which clearly means FDJ will play in the same role like how he plays at Barcelona under Xavi and clearly hasn't been working. So if you have a choice, would you play in the system that might not work for you or would you play in the system that will work or give higher chance to be working for you to perform and be integral part of that system to lead the success of the project? I'm not surprised if the player is buying into the project.

For 60m, it is a no brainer.

City and PSG will be our biggest rivals for his signature. One of them should snap up Pogba, then we only have to beat the other one to the signing.

If City are in for him, the chances will be slim. But i dont necessarily see why they should sign him, but they have money and can buy whoever they want.

Di Maria is not the only player sold by Madrid/Barca when they didn't particularly want to leave. It depends on the attitude of the player going forward how they turn out.

Could just as easily turn out to be a Sneijder to Inter, Robben to Bayern, Yaya Toure to Abu Dhabi type signing.

Basically this. I don’t see De Jong entertaining the idea of joining us in massive rebuild. He would prefer to stay at Barca, or playing for club like City. We would be his last choice, if we are even his choice at all.

I think the Di Maria epsode has scarred too many fans.
First of all I am not fussed about Frenkie. If he comes here, it will be because of ETH. However the idea you should never sign a player that has been told to leave because he will down tools is wrong.
Many top players have been told to leave by their clubs and gone on to perform admirably for their new clubs. Robben, Sneijder, Eto'o. The list is endless.
At that age and with a coach that he knows well, I do not worry about his motivation.
I made this same point yesterday. It's ridiculous that all we ever talk about is Di Maria, as if he is the first player to have ever been forced out by a club. Loads of players have, and said players have gone on to be great at other clubs. I don't understand why people cry about Di Maria so much.

As a side point Di Maria was still our top assist maker that season and started off the season on fire before Vangle started doing weird tactical things so clearly the motivation was there as it would be with almost every player.

However the larger point remains that many players have been forced out and have gone great in the other places they went.

If he is a actually available I expect City to be notified and they'll have a deal wrapped up in no time.

It will always be interesting for top players to join United. It’s also a new project now with ten Hag. I think we can get almost anyone aboard, including FdJ.

Yes, we can get the players we need but it doesn't necessarily have to be De Jong. If you find the right profile of player for your system you don't need to go shopping in Barcelona.

Liverpool built their team shopping at Southampton for the most part. De Jong is a great player but he's not the only player in the whole of world football who can fill the role of an #8 in Ten Hag's team.

Ralf himself said if you know what you're looking for the transformation needs to only take 2 or 3 windows. I don't want United to spend all summer long flirting with De Jong and then resort to a deadline day supermarket sweep, as we've seen so many times in the past 10 years.

Talk to De Jong, is he interested? If so, see what can be done. If not, move on. Find someone else who can be signed up and ready for preseason so Ten Hag can integrate them into the squad.

Bissouma and Caicedo would walk into our starting XI. We don't need to be looking as high up the list as De Jong to improve our midfield. We could sign anyone of literally hundreds of players who would come in and instantly level up our midfield.
Great post, sums it up perfectly. From where we are, we don’t need the worlds best 6/8 to challenge Chelsea as that’s where we should be aiming.

Realistic targets

I agree on that, he could turn out to be brilliant.

I am very cautious because we have been burnt on numerous occasions with players.

May be???

How in the feck are poxy Newcastle more attractive?
More money, more ambitious owners, and it could be a choice between UEFA Conference League and no Europe.

I can see how players will be attracted to their project, particularly given the recovery they've been on post-January window.

You obviously didn't read the memo. We are the worst run club in the history of worst run clubs and FDJ would rather burn in hell for all eternity than join us.

What we, fans, think we need and what ETH thinks we need might be two different things. There is nothing to say that won't sign another midfielder. Or that this rumors are true. Or that he will join. etc.

Why don't they just sell the likes of Depay, Dest, Trincao etc before de Jong? Surely they'll make €60m between the three of them and save on the same amount of wages.

The 95% done thing was obviously BS, we are one of a few interested clubs, nothing more.

Right now FDJ plays as an 8, because Busquets is their no 6. He's not great there, he doesn't have the attacking runs or the goal output. Having said that he is still starting for them.

Koeman and ETH believe FDJ's best position is in a double pivot. He can defend well but having a partner allows him to be more "adventurous" (ETH's words). Ten Hag played him next to Schone. Koeman played him next to De Roon in the NT, but didn't have the right midfield partner for him at Barca and had a better DM in Busquets, hence FDJ has been playing out of position as an 8.

Van Gaal believes FDJ's best position is as a sole no 6. He has played there for the NT and under Koeman for Barca. He even did a serviceable job filling in at CB.

I hope this clears up some of the confusion.

1,2 doesn't relate with the fact that ten Hag was probably the best manager de Jong had in his career. Not talking about anyone else on the team
On 3, I don't think trying to fit in a player as good as de Jong wouldn't be as hard as trying to make this United team played as a unit.
It seems that you implying theres a special bond between ETH and FDJ, do i missed something because i've never heard news regarding their special relationship during and after ajax? And players will have many other things aside of relationship with former manager to consider when choosing their next club: the prestige of the club, the prospects of winning titles, reputation, country or city where the club is located, including inputs from their family. the prospect of re-uniting with former manager isnt going to cut in if the club lack of those, especially when other better organized clubs are knocking on your door.

Statement of intent from ETH if this happens, it would be very hard to not get carried away if the new manager walks in and buys a midfielder right away after the neglect to the position we have had the last 7 years.

What’s with the defeatist comments about how he’s too good for us and we’re a second rate club now? There’s a lot more factors involved than just the results on the pitch at the time.

If it was based at such a high level perception, then Ronaldinho was off his meds choosing 6th placed, UEFA Cup competing Barcelona over League Champion, Champions League competing Manchester United.

All the talk of 'he doesn't want to come' seems to be driven by shit english sources, but people are clinging onto it as though it's fact.

Romero is tier 1 barca and saying it's done, yet people are rubbishing it

This has got my muppet juices flowing. Don Murtough doing his thing.
Imagine picking up De Jong for 50-60m EUR. A third of the price that West Ham seem to want for Declan Rice
Incredible isn't it, people telling me all the time in the Rice thread that we can't get a better option than Rice for £100m

Good thing is that he's worked with ETH so he'll have a level of trust and enthusiasm to work with him.
