Why are we so sentimental about Marcus Rashford?

Despite being a shadow of his former self and according to reports, one of the voices of toxicity in the United dressing room, Marcus Rashford will not be sold this season. In fact the greater likelihood is that he will be offered a new contract on enhanced terms (possibly £300k+ per week) making him almost impossible to sell if his form does not improve.

Yes Rashford is United by and man. One of a succession of players to emerge from the clubs youth academy and one who when he burst onto the scene looked destined for greatness. Yet, the fact is that whilst Rashford does indeed have the potential for greatness, potential is not realisation. To a large extent in recent seasons and particularly since his back injury Rashford has flattered to deceive. Not only that but his extra-curricular activities and rise to global prominence, lauded by royalty and former President Barack Obama, has given him an other worldly status. Again, if reports are to be believed the adulation and words in his ear may be going to his head. If I recall correctly, Sir Alex Ferguson let David Beckham go for less than this.

Honestly, I do not see Marcus Rashford fulfilling his potential at United. I genuinely think that ship has sailed. I am not saying that he has reached his peak. Far from it, he has plenty of headroom, but just not at United. He desperately needs a new challenge and United desperately need fresh blood.

However, for reasons of pure sentimentally we (the club and fans) seem unwilling to let him go. Seemingly our whole approach is based on hope rather than expectation.

What are your thoughts?
When you put aside football and concentrate on other things this things happen. Nobody cares about some PR pictures of training in Dubai when the minds is not there and you pretty much use football to promote yourself for other things. If he ever wants to be a professional player that people will remember he needs to cut everything and just concentrate on football. He should stay home this summer and train everyday. Both on his game and mentally.

He won't be sold because he's one of only 3 senior attackers we'll have in the squad at the start of next season - Ronaldo Sancho Rashford. We're already desperately short on numbers and in need of 2 attacking signings just as the minimum, and then you want to add Rashford's replacement to our shopping list?

He's also scored 20+ goals 2 seasons in a row before this one mainly from a wide position, very useful player to have if ETH can get him back to his best.

As people have already said, he’s an academy product and is involved with well-publicised charity work. There’s probably an element of some fans don’t want to believe he may not be as committed to Utd as they’d think he’d be.

But the performances over the past two years or so haven’t been great, and his PR machine is ridiculous. I’ve never seen someone have PR like he does, that wasn’t in public office or running for it. People are getting sick that he talks the talk through his PR, but doesn’t deliver on the pitch. If you do your talking off the pitch, then you better back it up otherwise it comes back and bites you. It wears thin when ‘Sorry I’ll try better next time’ is trotted out half a dozen times in a season, and he’s not alone in that respect to be fair.

I would personally sell him as I don’t think he’s going to improve that much for the money he’s on, but I can see him with us this season. If he continues as he’s been doing then hell be seeing the bench a lot under ETH, and we can’t have a £200k a week player who warms the bench most weeks. The guys who are earning around £200k a week should be first names on the team sheet and starting the majority of games and delivering most weeks.

Don't forget Barca and Liverpool and whoever else is interested because his phone has never stopped ringing. Where do you think these rumours are actually coming from?
No idea, but I note the idea of him moving Brighton or Everton is apparently considered too ridiculous to be worth starting a rumour over.

Most people hate him here despite no evidence it is anything but a lack of confidence. Title should be why are we so wierd about Marcus rashford
Here it is again. The special pleading fallacy. Ultimately, every other player other than Marcus is judged according to their short, mid and long-term form. But alas, for Marcus, he is the exception to the rule, always.

Injury! Low confidence! It's a hop, skip and a jump from one defensive position to the next.

It's sentiment, pure and simple.

He was and is supposed to be our golden boy, the homegrown kid who somehow embodies what we're about all the while being this exciting world class player, the activities outside the pitch was supposed to be the cherry on top.

His excessive pr spins( i don't know how much he's had to do with them maybe it's not on him and it's on the club) has soured me a bit on him but I still like him so I hope he manages to turn things around under ten hag.

He has no potential to be a leader at all.

I've never seen him shout at or encourage other players ever. Sometimes it looks like he wouldn't even know the current score if you asked him during the game
Not a leader. He literally took on the government and made them change policy single-handedly

First of all, the fact he did all this amazing work and changed so many lives makes him a top bloke for me, above anything else. He has been terrible this season but it's not exactly hard to imagine his mental health has been impacted. He looks a broken man. Suspect the missed penalty in the Euros final might've started the whole thing off. He was being hailed as a hero for his charity work, then he costs England their first major trophy in decades. That's one hell of an emotional burden to carry.

Imagine the letters he gets, the emails, the tweets from families in need. The awful stories he hears, and dealing with that 24/7, week in week out. He's the most abused footballer on social media in the world, by a large distance. That would drain anyone, footballers aren't emotional robots just because they earn a lot of money. I suffered from depression once, and believe me, it impacts your ability to do anything in your life. You become a different person. Not saying it definitely is that, but it looks that way from here.

Last season he scored 21 goals and provided 15 assists, despite patchy form at times. Season before that, 22 goals and 12 assists. That's 43 goals and 27 assists in two seasons, and he's come up trumps in the big games many times over. Yet some on here reckon he's always been rubbish. We could do with a few more players that can put up those kind of contributions whilst being rubbish.

Currently he looks like he's forgotten how to do everything he's good at, but he has enough credit in the bank to deserve a fresh start next season. I think he is one who will benefit hugely from the new manager. Definitely shouldn't be getting a new contract though. Hopefully the club have finally learned that lesson.

I don't think it's an over exaggeration to think that if Rashfords form of the last couple of seasons carries on into next season he could very well go down the Theo Walcott route which would include clubs like you've mentioned.

It's still to early to mention those type of clubs but on the other hand mentioning clubs like PSG, Bayern, Barca and Liverpool are as far fetched for me as Brighton and Everton are for you.

He's had an awful year. Ran into the ground by Ole, ostracised by Rangnick, all the while burdened the PR monster he and his people created. The behaviour doesn't look good, the performances don't look good and the future doesn't look good.

Even so, it doesn't make sense to write him off right now. We know he can win matches for us, we know can score 20+ goals a season and we know he can step up in big games.

If we can get him back to the level he was at 2 years ago, he's an incredibly valuable player. There's nothing sentimental about realising that it would be better to get Rashford back into form than it would be to blow £100m on an attacker who could maybe be as good as Rashford once was.

The question is; can Rashford and the new coaching staff work together to achieve that?

Why was he ostracized by Rangnick? You state that like he was an innocent victim. He was ostracized because he played like shite, because he has a shite attitude on the pitch and there are strong rumors he has equally as shite attitude in the dressing room.

If i couldn't get sentimental about an academy product trying to make it into the 1st team of the club i support, I'd stop watching football altogether.
The issue is sentimentality can cloud judgement and get in the way of doing what's right.
In a football context with regards to players, I guess if i have a reason to be sentimental it just means I'd afford them a little more time than another player.

As for our situation now, I think the entire 1st team squad has had ample opportunities to be their best versions on the pitch, so any one wanting to leave can do so, and in Rashford's case if he chooses to fight for a place, fine but it's time to deliver consistently otherwise in december we should seriously consider parting ways.

My support of Marcus and I am sure that of others isn`t down to sentiment. When he is on form he is an exciting player in the United tradition, he gets the club and what it should stand for as he is one of the homegrown and he has used his fame to focus on important things outside the insular world of the contemporary multi-millionaire football players, some of whom are happy to warm the bench because they`re getting paid so much.

The instability of the club since Sir Alex`s exit isn`t something that any United player has enjoyed. The recruitment and team selections are not down to Marcus and others who genuinely care about this club but have struggled to deal with the managerial merry-go-round and incoherency of too much of United`s activities.

Ole appreciated him but ran him ragged for too much of the time he was here, there were no seniors in the team who thrived on pressure and had the success to show the way to the younger/new recruits of players after the exit of Rio et al following the Moyes disaster.

If he really is disconnected from United as some here think and some elsewhere speculate then a change of club would be necessary but I think Ten Hag`s appointment should give Marcus some hope. And if anybody has proof of Marcus` `toxicity` then here`s the chance to tell us all - and until you do, we can assume that this assertion is nonsense.

Oh, are you one of those "Rangnick is god" types by any chance? I mean, I clearly - in the very same sentence - blamed Rashford for his PR nonsense, and in the very same paragraph pointed to his poor performances.

It seems you only saw the 3 words that went against the worst manager in Manchester United's PL history... oh sorry, will that set you off again?

Too many assumptions in the OP and rant based on that.

Fans want Rashford to go and are sick of his stooges in the media.

Club has not offered a 300k contract yet. Hope it doesn't happen and after Woodward and his friends have left the club, this is not going to continue.

Don't think he is an exception. Many people on caf talk about Shaw regaining his 2020/21 form, though that one season is an exception and he is generally underwhelming
Martial fans used to talk about how the managers were evil
Pogba fans constantly moaned about the people behind him, beside him and ahead of him on teh field as the cause of all problems.

On the pitch he has played within himself in the last year and a half to two years and shown zero leadership. His decision making has been really terrible as well.

Roy Keane was relegated with Forest but stood out like a sore thumb as a proper player, a proper leader. He didn't shrink when things were going bad around him.

Rashford might turn his form around (I'm doubtful) but he'll never be a leader of a team

I've never been sentimental towards him because I can't really do that anymore. Academy player or not, time's changed. Modern footballers are not your Giggs or Scholes. And I was proven correct the moment Rashford PR team started leaking stories about the possibility of moving to another club. I felt indifferent at that time as we shouldn't rely the club on him, or any single player.

People were ridiculed straight out, when Rashford was scoring because they dared analyse other parts of his game lacking. His inconsistency on the ball, sloppiness, his decision-making in the final third, his propensity to run into blind-alleys all present even during his seasons of productivity. Now he's not scoring and those same weaknesses are more glaringly obvious, people are now contesting that his general play has dropped due to a plethora of reasons.

No. His general play has always been like this. You just weren't willing to give credence to them because the goals were flying in. Time for a lot of people to take a more objective view of Marcus not centered around whether he's scoring or not. There's other more long-term deficiencies to address too.

Because he's proven to be a talented young player over the last few years, with room to develop into a quality striker that the club acquired for free. He's an asset.

Side note: why do so many of our fans mock the club because they look for certain desirable traits in a player - otherwise known as United DNA - before signing them?

There was a curious moment in the season when Gary Neville slated Rashford in a game for not working hard whilst praising Ronaldo in contrast for working hard. This resulted in fans on here and other social media outlets jumping on Rashford big time whilst prasing Ronaldo for working hard for the team.

If you look at the actual stats for the season. Rashford's pressing was average to good ( good for pressures in the attacking third) whilst Ronaldo is actually the least hard working player on the pitch in his position in the league.

https://fbref.com/en/players/a1d5bd30/scout/11160/Marcus-Rashford-Scouting-Report

https://fbref.com/en/players/dea698d9/scout/11160/Cristiano-Ronaldo-Scouting-Report

Rashford's issue is that he presses at the wrong time. This is something that's been highlighted by Michael Cox in the past. I don't think there's much to suggest that he won't put in a shift. It's more a case of him not being defensively aware at the correct time.

It's possible that Rashford has fallen out of love with the game and will do a Dele Alli but personally I think it's much more likely that he'll come back and contribute to the team again.

You just don’t offer one of the worst if not the worst performing forward player in the league one of the biggest contracts, no matter how pumped up his public persona is. Surely even he can see he’s playing for his future next year. Much cheaper to let him go on a free than be tied down to paying him 100 million over the next 5 years. Let someone else make that mistake instead

For me, he lacks serious football intelligence.
Look at who his coaches have been.

I really think we will see a much better Rashford next season. He's still a young man (younger than McTominay, for example) and he has the talent. He looks lost and in need of some direction - I think Ten Hag can provide that.

It's genuinely sad to me how supporting homegrown players, hoping they succeed, is looked at in such a negative light by many on here. It's strange.
The whole forum on the footballing side is awful at the moment, some of it for good reason, but most of it is just beating a dead horse essentially.

Don’t get me wrong, Rashford was appalling last season in ability and sometimes attitude on the pitch, regardless, I still would love to see him succeed here and think he should have another opportunity under Ten Hag. If it continues I have no doubt ETG will ship him out.

I do not understand why we keep upping players contracts even if they under perform. Why not give a new contract with a reduced salary and more game related bonuses?

If the player does not accept them terms after being close to being championship standard than they are champions league standard, get rid. Hardly going to be a shock to the board to see yhe same 250k a week player perform just as bad if not worse when you give them 300+ and a signing on fee.

We are rewarding mediocrity, meanwhile, it seems Dybala is leaving Juve and is a far better player. Shocking decisions.

2 years ago he was turning out week in week out for us, putting in match-winning performances, when he had what was essentially a broken back.

Three years ago he had the best under 23 stats for an attacking player in Europe.

Which always makes me shake my head when I see people saying 'hes crap'.

There was an exceptional player in there, ole did to him exactly what the scouse did to michael owen, and as poor as he has been, he deserves a chance to get back to his best.
Hes had chances! When hes on the pitch, he strolls most of the game, doesnt look like a guy who is wanting to fight back to get to his former self. Hes happy where he is at now getting paychecks, we arent a player daycare center.

We want players who have the fight in them when things go wrong, this is a main reason the fanbase want Pogba gone, he plays only when the wind is blowing in the right direction.

What do you think of Lingard and Pogba?

Explain how he spent half the season in a sulk on the pitch and not bothering to track back helping us defend, if he 'gets the club and what it should stand for'

He's our academy poster boy. A poor lad from a Manchester estate who rose up to become a star of the first team. FIFA literally created a storyline game mode based on his early United career. It's a powerful narrative for the club that they won't want to throw away until it becomes obvious that he's done at the top level.

The fans were desperately looking for positives to cling to in the post-SAF era and his early purple-patch in-front of goal provided them and the club with that something. The club promoted his abilities way beyond his actual level, the English media predictably lapped up the 'wonderkid' hype and half of our fans bought it.

I don't want to keep hammering the lad but based purely on technical ability, he could easily, easily have been one of those players who in 50% of realities is currently playing for a team like Brighton or Fulham. Look at Adnan Janujaz...now without a club....was probably a better player at 19 than Rashford.

The trouble is, there are a large percentage of football fans who get too involved in the "banter" and the social media nonsense. So they spent three seasons telling their Liverpool and City supporting mates he was the real deal and then couldn't back down when the obvious truth stared them in the face.
You do know Januzaj is looking to sign for a top club, Barcelona are the favourites, right?

By the same logic Pogba is now without a club, as was Mbappe for a while

What the feck are you talking about? Rashford had been a major focus of criticism for the fan base.

Why is there hope for him? Simple. The last 2 or 3 seasons he has been on the up and up with 21 and 22 goals scored and many assists.

The better question is why would we turn on a player after a bad season even though we have objective evidence he can not only do it, but can grow.
